In the last 13 years, PL teams had won the Champions 2 times. The richest league in Europe won the same amount of champions as the poorest (Bundesliga). PSG had been a shit show in champions, literally ridiculous, and is the team that had spent the most amount of money in salary and players. Italy had rough years but money will not be the key factor for a return in champions, a factor for sure but not the key. They need to reinforce the team to secure the qualification and the semifinals year after year, then they need to regain experience.

Serie A, on the other hand, has way more strong teams and the sub-top teams are also better than the counterparts in La Liga. The fragility in La Liga is showing now when Barcelone are in big trouble, and I believe Serie A will be the next league to compete properly with the money train of the Premier League in the future

What's happening is that this season the Serie A teams finally look like they can keep up with the high tempo, high intensity football played in Europe. I've been noticing it since some time, this season they're dominating their opponents physically for the most part, don't suffer the opponents press and instead press with higher intensity, when for a decade they looked so slower and less intense than German, English and Spanish teams. We are also seeing a balancing among the leagues that are not called Premier League, not because Serie A is getting better, but because the other leagues, especially La Liga, are getting poorer and worse, therefore making it easier for the Italian teams to get to the later stages of European competitions
@DonQwantsyou Жыл бұрын
serie A has more good clubs than either la liga or the bundesliga and this has been building for a few years, first with juventus then atalanta, inter, milan, roma, lazio and napoli (the best in europe many believe this year). La liga has seen seville go way down ( a sub .500 team), Atletico madrid is down now and barcelona, though winning the la liga crashed out vs Inter milan. Only the premier league with its billions have as many good teams as serie A but they have had a bad season seeing Tottenham, chelsea, and Man U crash out badly. Also the best coaches in the world are italian, and the ones in italy are finally guiding their teams to success in europe. tactically the teams play differently in italy not just cattenaccio anymore , but it still can work as we've seen from ac Milan. the next step is to develop homegrown talent which of course they had to do before the Bosman ruling when there were restrictions on foreign players, and also to give them a chance to play, not sit on the bench or loan them to second or third division clubs. the Italy Euro victory in 2020 illustrates that there is still pretty good talent in italy to achieve lofty heights.
@RACM27MD Жыл бұрын
It's not only that La Liga is getting less competitive. Serie A also increased the level. But I think until they keep having teams in semifinals for at least 3 years in a row then it's more luck than Serie A coming back. Netherless, the quality increased, just not to the level where the teams would dominate Europe
@ehmp-gl7yn Жыл бұрын
@@RACM27MD as I wrote in my original post, I see a huge increase in tempo, fitness, endurance, but not so much in terms of quality. The Juve team of 2015 or 2017, Sarri's Napoli and the Spalletti's Roma team that featured Alisson, Rudiger, Strootman, Salah, Dzeko, De Rossi, were all way better than any current serie A team quality wise, including the fabulous Napoli of the first half of the season. Yet they won nothing in Europe, as they played at a slow pace, and were athletically inferior. Being fast, strong, fit, and play high tempo football is enough to be competitive in Europe, as Spanish teams are on the decline and German teams bar Bayern are nothing special. Especially if you get a favorable draw, like Milan and Inter this year. In order to dominate like they used to do in the 90's they'd need to add quality, but there's just not enough money for it, as almost the totality of Serie A teams are bang poor or on teh verge of bankruptcy. Quality is pricey in football, unfortunately.

Like this season many teams are fighting for a top spot in Serie A and its become difficult to predict how games are gona end, many mid to low team have betten top team and while its painful as a fan of a top team its defenitly entertaining to no end.

"Italian sides have won 12 Champions Leagues" no wait my friend, Milan alone has won 7, the remaining 5 are split 2 for Juventus and 3 for "inter" Safe to say that without Milan the presence of Italy in european football would be much less
@oldskoolmusicnostalgia Жыл бұрын
You can't do analysis like that over just a season. One simple thing: just having Lazio and Roma in the CL next season instead of one of the Milan's clubs will make it nearly impossible to repeat such performances. Roma rely on Mourinho's knowledge to get them through in Europe but that may not be enough in the levels above Europa and Conference. Lazio... everyone knows what happens when Sarri leads a team into the CL. He'll grumble at the additional fixtures, they'll be out in the group stages or R16 max.

No…as an Italian I can say that this year is just a fluke. We are clearly 1to steps behind other clubs in Europe. Our youth program is in shambles and our clubs are just not competitive. Let us not forget that this year the World Cup in December altered some dynamics.

nope brother. SIUU arrival in Juventus destroyed the Turin club's financing. They were paying a lot to the self proclaimed GOAT. They were always first but slipped out. Inter were lucky that Ronaldo was destroying Juventus. Rather Thanks Lakaka and Conte. Then guess what?? Ronaldo was still at Juventus....Inter decided to sell all its player and Conte left. Only because Milan was almost in bankrupt, when money was equal, Milan was the better side even defeated Madrid 5-0 and Barca 4-0 in the Champions League final. Milan has 7 so it's the second most prestigious club, we will see in the future, if the amount of money will be the same, It will be a carnage, same as the 80's and 90's.

@@LaVaZ000 Last 20 years, so you start from 2003. AC Milan won the Champions League in 2003 and 2007, Inter Milan won it in 2010. After that, there was the 2015 season in which Juventus reached the final while Napoli and Fiorentina were in the Europa League semifinals. Not to mention that 2020 did see Atalanta and Inter performing well. Italian teams have done nice in the last 20 years, it's just that they aren't consistent.
