When I used to do this a zillion years ago, I'd set the dwell by cranking the engine. Or check the dwell by cranking the engine with the spark plugs out. Then I would set the timing while cranking the engine with the spark plugs out. This way both the dwell (points gap) and spark timing would be dead on. I always did it this way when I did a tune up. Then when it started and ran, I'd verify everything again. Never fails to work.
@whattherustАй бұрын
That is a good tip. While I have set the dwell by cranking, I never thought about doing the same with the timing. Thanks!
@syyenergy7Ай бұрын
@@whattherust Try it with the spark plugs out. The engine spins fast enough to give you an accurate reading. I pretty always did it this way when I tuned up cars decades ago. Most of the time , it's dead-on perfect. on the money. Save a LOT of time and guesswork.

I had that same problem in a 64 Chevy back in1979. On holidays, 1000 miles from home. I changed points and condenser due to a slight miss. By the time I made it home I had rewired the whole ignition, rebuilt the carb, twice. Broke an engine mount from car backfiring. A friend said to change the condenser but I told him I already had. Put the old one back in and…. Problem solved. Even back then, new parts didn’t mean good parts 😂😂

Good Morning Christina and Richard !! That to me was one of the Best videos yet ! The whole process of step by step , working threw problems is the way it is in this hobby. Great suggestion on the condenser Christina ! I have been told that if the ignition has been left on for an extended period of time , it will burn up a condenser ( don't know that for sure , but makes sense) Richard , Sherlock Holmes himself could never figure some of the weird things you see done in the name of " automotive repair " that plug situation....wow ! Great observations yall. Someone who didn't know what they were doing tried to service the engine. They drained the oil & lost the drain plug, changed the spark plugs (wrong plugs), cap (180 degrees off) and wires, and because they couldn't get it running, they parked it and got a different ride.

Richard, back in the late 70's, my sister brought her car to a repair shop for a tune up. Plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, condenser, check timing... One week later, she asked me to look at the car, it's running rough, low power, etc..I removed the distributor cap, and found the issue. Someone cut the condenser wire off and removed it. I showed her, then I installed a used condenser and the car ran great again!!! When she brought the damaged condenser to the repair shop, naturally, they blamed me, I was drumming up business for my shop. She said, not possible. My brother is not in auto mechanics, he's in satellite communications work. Now what do you have to say?? She found a different shop to use. Christina, again, YOU NAILED IT!! My experience confirms your repair fix!! I wave my hand at you!! For respect, you understand!!
