I groom mine at home. I recently purchased a new clipper, and carefully did a full body groom on my soft coated wheaten terrier. I don’t do the nails yet. It is definitely exhausting on the back if you don’t have a grooming table. What use to take me 3 hours now I do in about 2 hours! Thanks for the videos. They really helped!

Thanks! Very helpful. I thought I would try the first groom on my 3 month puppy since I wanted to acclimate him to tools and being touched before bringing him to a strange place and new person, plus he's still finishing his vaccine cycle. Got most of him done with breaks throughout the day. Very helpful, I think he will be more ok with going to a groomer eventually now that he's used to it. Or maybe with practice I'll get better at it and keep grooming at home. Thank you!

Hi there thanks for watching. Yes that’s awesome that you are exposing him to all the noises and equipment. That’s so important when they are young for the dogs sake as well as the groomer. Hi Lindsay that is for watching. Wheatens can be nervous but the more they are groomed the better and some like any breed will never like it. The shorter the groom the better so keeping your pups coat in good condition will help her tolerate the grooming.. wheatens can be stubborn and anxious. Hi Tammy, thanks so much for watching and commenting! We are going to do a slicker brush review but I use the medium bristle bent at the ends. What it is that isn’t working about the slicker brushes you have used before? is the brush fully going through the coat? It could be that the bristles on the brush are not hard enough? Let us know and we are happy to help you find something that works for you.

I do my two Irishdoodles at home after having a disastrous groom which has left my little girl very skittish. She came home with red scratches on her lady parts and had obviously been clippered before all knots were out, she used to get little spider knots, just enough to stop the clipper. She looked a complete mess. Continued use of conditioner and keeping her reasonably short has stopped that. Both of them hate having their feet and faces blown dry so the grooming happens in stages, wash, dry, rest and let face dry, then cut. I've never done a sanitary trim with clippers, I will do that next time. Thank you for giving me more tips and confidence.
@FurryFriendsZone3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your feedback. That’s awesome that you are grooming them on your own. It can be a lot of work. Most dogs really don’t like their faces being dried so I normally keep the dryer on a very low setting and try and keep the head as still as possible. Fluffing out the coat and drying completely is a really significant part of the groom and you will be much happier with the results. Let me know how the sanitary goes. The first few times don’t go too close to the skin until you build your confidence because you don’t want any reaction on the skin and it’s easier when the dog has no matting. You don’t run as much of a risk of nicking the skin. Good luck and let me know how you make out!😊

@FurryFriendsZone2 жыл бұрын
Hi there thanks for watching. You always have to be careful because the blade can definitely cut flaps of skin if you don’t pay attention. The feet have webbing so always be extra careful and always make sure you are using the proper blade. You have to go with your comfort level for sure

The dog looks nice after the groom, but this groom really is what is done on a Doodle (except for the shaving of the ears, since Doodle ears are long), and has nothing to do with the groom for the specific breed: Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, which is what I was looking for.

@amybethlayton23222 жыл бұрын
Are there combs longer than that? Like a one inch or even a two inch? I prefer my Wheaten to be shaggy but in a nice way. I am also sensitive to heat so we live in AC comfort. When we travel, like the beach, I get him professionally groomed shorter but since I never like the results I want to learn myself. I see lots of advice for the shorter cuts. What about the longer, winter coat lengths?
@FurryFriendsZone2 жыл бұрын
Hi… yes there are comb attachments that are 1 inch and one a bit longer. Comb attachments can only be used properly if the dog is completely mat free or they won’t go through the coat.

Hello! Thanks for commenting. I breed wheatens and groom a ton of them and most customers like them clipped this way and some like the traditional wheaten clip. The traditional wheaten clip can be more difficult for people grooming at home to do so we try to make our at home grooming videos as easy as possible for people to follow but ultimately it is all personal preference. Sorry, another question... I brush my dog out before going to the groomer. It takes me like an hour or more to do this. I am careful about any close to the skin and everything. Then at the groomers they claim he was matted! I think they just don't understand Wheaten fur. They bath him and he gets matted again! Their fur easily does this but at home I brush before and after baths and it is significantly less after the bath. My question is do groomers consider fur types and take that into account before chopping the fur closer than customer asks? I dread the groomers because of this. Want to learn myself now.
@FurryFriendsZone2 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for your question don’t ever be sorry. I find a lot of people think their dogs aren’t matted but they are. Make sure when you brush that you can run a metal comb through the coat while it’s running against his skin. Many people brush the top of their dogs but not to the skin. Have you watched how to brush your dog video we have?
@amybethlayton23222 жыл бұрын
@@FurryFriendsZone Yes I did. I always comb to the skin. I have had many dogs and several breeds. Worst was Samoyeds my father had. They blew their fur so much we had to brush them for a week straight twice a year!

Thanks for asking this question Tammy. There are actually harnesses that help to hold the back end of a dog up when they are being groomed. Unfortunately, you did not start with Wheaten Terrier, and did not end with a Wheaten Terrier. The classic beautiful standard trim for a Wheaten should have the lovely "Fau" over the eyes, and the ears should be trimmed almost to the leather. The head shape should be rectangular (almost like a brick shaped). There is a show cut - which is strictly following the AKC/CKC standard, and there is the pet cut - which take a little bit of liberty with the more stringent rules, to make the appearance more family friendly. But this is taking it too far. The result is no longer a wheaten terrier. Very disappointing to see people who don't like the Wheaten look, want to have Wheaten Terriers and change them into some other creatures.
@FurryFriendsZone2 жыл бұрын
Hi there thanks for watching. Being a groomer I have to accommodate everyone’s wishes and to be honest most people with wheatens don’t really want the standard clip. I have to clip their dog as per their requests and everyone has different likes and dislikes ❤️🐶❤️

Even with a pet trim I wouldn't dream of sending a dog out like this let alone posting it public on KZbin I'd be embarrassed. I know owners choose some stupid looks but a groomer should advise what would look best because your work is your advertisement to others when the owners are walking their dog.

Hi Sara, thanks so much for watching and we appreciate your comment. I groom hundreds of wheatens and I also breed them. Everyone that owns a wheaten chooses what hair cut they prefer for their dog. Miserable comment. People who own these dogs want them to be comfortable. Wheaten's get very hot, are prone to hot spots and need lots of excercise. They are hard to keep clean and some people like checking their fur for ticks, prickers, etc. Don't insult someone and begin by saying you don't mean to. This groomer is terrific and showed us the most popular cut. There's no need for rude comments.
