This is awesome! My dad worked for the MNCPPC for 35 years. He was a heavy equipment operator, I thought that might be him on the bulldozer. When you come out of the tunnel, that white house you see is my families home. I lived there until 1985. The house was torn down a couple of years ago. GREAT MEMORIES!

This is gold! I worked on the train at Cabin John Park in Potomac for many years and occasionally came over here when needed. Pretty amazing to see how much nature has reclaimed the park. Looks like building Pine Lake is in progress at the time of this filming. The train opened at Wheaton in 1964 from my records, privately owned. It was sold to MNCPPC sometime in the 1970s I believe, around the same time the track was widened. The train shown here is an old Allan Herschell S16 "1865" Train running on 16" Gauge track. Today the track is 24" gauge with the new CP Huntingtons, more modern, faster, more powerful and higher passenger capacity. Not to mention, the S16s are no longer made and parts are hard to find. There are still some remnants of these trains around if you know where to look at Wheaton Regional Park. I believe these trains most recently were in Texas at Herman Park. I've collected thousands of photos over the years, both at Cabin John Park and Wheaton Park and the trains. There were two of these trains running at the same time at Wheaton, sharing the tracks. My understanding is the park and train, around this time, were favorites of a family named Kennedy that lived in a large white house in DC....

I am serious when I say that I had fond memories of the playground equipment with crushed gravel to break our falls, the fighter jet with medal slide that got hot as heck in summer, adults open use of tobacco amongst the children, etc. I wish the clip included Old McDonald's Farm, Billy The Goat trash can and Pine Lake. Wheaton Regional Park was awesome. My experiences were less tame though because older kids would get those Mery-Go_Rounds spinning really fast causing some kids to fall off or crying to get off! Those occasions built character and made us tough. Thanks for sharing!
