This is what I would do. The bearing surface looks to have enough length to carry the load. I'd go with a super tight slip fit for the main shaft and let the shaft wear be the bearing clearance and put two oil grooves in the bushing. I don't know if I like all the friction being made that a whole length bearing brings. If I had to..maybe add .250 length. Oh and the howling could very well be the bushings being a bit worn.

I never though about the added friction, solid game plan

I think gear whine is actually caused by gears being too close to each other in mesh? ik straight cut gears whine no matter what but some definitely worse than others.. I lapped and polished my input gears on a peerless 700 and quieted it right down.. I ran the gears with valve compound on them for quite some time and I think that was really what quieted it

Interesting though, I’m definitely in agreement that the straight cut gears are always gonna make noise but I’ve been around some of these that are pretty quite, and some that hurt your ears and usually it’s the ones with a rough life that start making a bunch of noise and it seems the more I abuse them the louder they get so I’m assuming they don’t don’t need more clearance but I’ve been wrong before. Truthfully this trans should tell us a lot, it will be 98 percent new bearings/bushings, except for the giant ones that hold the bull gear that are in perfect shape and are unavailable anymore. So if it’s loud when it’s back together you was right if it’s quite I was, it will be interesting to see anyways

I will have to try the valve lapping compound idea on my 820s though

@@creepycrawler43 worn ones make a tell tale noise also with worn bearings there's an element of misalignment which I think is the noise that really comes out on decel... What im talking about really is inconsistent mesh and quality control

@@ianbuilds7712 I e messed with some peerless stuff and the quality control isn’t the greatest, totally different on these they are a Rolex of a transmission very high quality throughout
