I really thought that they cast Aviendha when I saw the actress for Elaine…so why not cast a more blonde actress for Elaine, cast her as Aviendha and be so much closer to the actual characters? Choosing a POC actress for an Aiel even goes against the TV-Series established world building, because Rand is mistaken as an Aiel…not Perrin. So what absolutely disgusts me is when they change things from the books, but forget to follow through, … like with Perrin killing his (non-existent) wife and then just failing to address any trauma because….the writers forgot about it and just followed the books. How can you fail to see that race swapping almost HALF the characters makes it really hard to establish ethnic groups from certain regions?! That‘s so important for the world of WOT that you can look at someone and basically place them near to their place of origin….but no, if you make every place ‚diverse‘, then you loose all of these separate identities, which is exactly the opposite of what your message should be…yes, everyone has equal rights, but they are not all the same…that is boring. Anybody find it hilarious to hear about the ‚blood of Manetheren‘ when you have a black dude, a black girl, an Indian chick, and two white dudes riding with Moraine? They obviously do not have the same heritage going back only a few generations.

After seeing some reviews on youtube i got interested in reading the books, and oh boy, i went looking for copper and found gold, i'm now half-way in the whole series and can't be happier of never having to watch the show again. And also thanks to this show, Tolkien's fans are on alert with the Rings of Power because there's a precedent of what is their objective, and it's not good.

Oh it's all perfectly logical: they weren't adapting the books they were just looking for yet another platform for "the message" - as Drinker puts it. It was one more franchise to fu'ck over, murder and then parade the remains in the name of SJW propaganda. It became so predictable by now that i gave up on shows that are made or released 2020-2022. Even Reacher that i only saw after the word got around that it was a really good show (and it is) still had "whaman power" moments (at least there they were kind of justified in the story and were mercifully brief). They scrapped the dichotomy of the One Power in favor of "men themselves are corrupt so only wahmen should channel." The books make it very clear that the only time where there is ever one singular source is the True Power, which is from the Dark One. Otherwise, the One Power is specifically divided into two halves because a man that channels with a woman becomes infinitely more powerful than either by themselves. It feeds into the Taoist theme of duality that Rigney (aka Jordan) wrote into the books. The Aes Sedai logo is literally the yin yang sans the dots.

I unfortunately never read the books prior to watching the series, but I'm currently on book 4 and enjoying it more than watching a few minutes of a series that's mediocre at best. As you've said in your videos on the first season, where they followed the book, it's good, but whenever they divert from it, they seem to lose character development, story lines, good writing etc. The change to Aviendha is really dumb, because Rand is supposed to look like the Aiel, and now that's gone too. Watching the first season I was confused a lot of the time, because they failed to explain a lot of stuff that's clear in the books. Like Rand being different from the rest of Edmond's Field and being mistaken for an Aielman throughout the book. I personally think they should've kept Elyas, Rand and Mat fooling around playing gleemen in Four Kings (which makes them realise they need to be even more careful), the parade with Logain in Caemlyn where Rand meets Elyane and Gawyn and they should've left the Amyrlin Seat for the second season, to show that now the plot thickens even more. I get that you change stuff from books to screen, which is also what Peter Jackson did with the LotR trilogy. The main difference here is that PJ, the team and actors had a lot of respect for the Tolkien, his messages, the characters and tried to keep true to the essence of the story. This series is just virtue signalling all the way, which is unfortunately going to happen to Rings of Power as well. And why are Siuan and Moiraine involved? They're just friends and complicites in an intricate plot. Looks like the Sam and Frodo are not just friends argument.
@disparutoo2 жыл бұрын
This is the issue with changing things is that it's an entire piece of work, it builds upon each other. So you CAN'T change anything because it makes it all come down. They wanted Emonds field to be an international airport, which means that Rand COULDN'T stand out, because it was just a blob of nothing in particular. And this is the issue they'll have all over. They use lines about how its possible to know where anyone comes from. While making the entire world have no character as they've destroyed everyones homelands.
@stevenmortelmans28772 жыл бұрын
@@disparutoo I fully agree. Some of the things they changed didn't even make sense when viewing it without having read the books. Like why they hated the Aes Sedai. Moiraine didn't really do anything wrong in the first place. If they had kept it like the books; Edmond's Field being so secluded that even the kingdom to which it belongs didn't bother to send tax collectors anymore and the only news the villagers got was from the occasional merchant, peddler or gleeman. Then it would make sense to be distrusting of Aes Sedai, because then they would've viewed Moiraine as a Darkfriend if she was parading with her ring. The changes they make to the characters will cause a ripple through the series (I think) because a lot of the actions from the books won't make sense anymore in the series. And I hate how they treated all the characters as voices for their politics and basically destroyed Mat, Lan and Loial. And the most impactful event of the story; the battle at Tairen's Gap and the Eye of the World were far less impactful than in the books. Adding to that, the Horn of Valere was just plain stupidity in the series...Padan Fain walking like a very confident man, instead of a creeping gollum-like person, taking the little box instead of a heavy golden chest, and just leaving... I'm sorry for ranting, but it gets on my nerves the more I progress in the story.

When you look at it as the book adaptation that it is however; it now turns into a dumpster fire. WOT has to be one of the worst adaptations I've ever seen of an intellectual property. The show runners miss the mark on nearly everything that makes the Wheel of Time the Wheel of Time. Baring a resemblance in name only. I will not be wasting my time on any further seasons of this train wreak.

i remember the sword of truth tv series made by sam raimi (the legend of the seaker), and while they changed some stuff from the books and made it far more episodic, and transformed the world into a hercules the legandary journey type of thing combined with the terrible production values, I sort of felt bad for the sword of truth fans (I have a lot of problems with that series, but i thougth it was done dirty by the tv show). that said, that tv show is virtually identical to the books when you compare it to this amazon abortion. It's odd that it makes me WISH wheel of time only got the sam raimi treatment that sword of truth got. on the surface, in a vacuum, sword of truth at least was moderately fun TV, because sam raimi doesn't make unwatchable shit. Sure it was cheap popcorn fair but it still was moderately enjoyable and interesting as long as you didn't read the series the changes wouldn't bug you too much (in fact if anything most of the changes seemed to be made to turn the very rated R content into PG content, and stretch out the content of the books to fit an episodic tv show, so it's not even like Sam Raimi was intentionally changing around a lot of the story.

If it were on a STRICTLY streaming service, it probably wouldn't make it past S3. THIS steaming pile, however, is on Amazon... and there are numerous OTHER reasons to have Prime... like the free expedited shipping. That means that there probably WILL be a lot of people who watch it, simply because it's there and they are already paying for the service... so Amazon won't even know how many people ONLY watched it because it was "free"... and they were bored. It makes it really difficult to tell if this show (or any other) is actually giving them a return on their investment. In fact, it's even MORE difficult to tell with Prime than it is with other streaming platforms like Netflix etc.

Hot take: I don't think any of the swooping changes come from not liking the original or thinking they can do better. I think they come as 2 things: 1 - corporate mandates everyone has to abite to (like an internal memo saying 'make at least 2 characters gay plz, we need to meet that quota'); and 2 - wish fulfillment from the writers and directors. They didn't want to work on adaptations. They wanted to write and film their own original TV shows with massive budgets and their best stories, but are stuck with whatever the studios think will sell. So they get all over the adaption trying to insert their own ideas in. That is maddening to the fans, and often ends up sinking the show anyway, because those changes are in conflict with the original story, but the famous IP's what they have to work with, so the famous IP it is.

I wrote a book. Sold a few hundred copies. It appears I'm not very good at it. Robert Jordan wrote some books and sold over 90 million books. He's really, really good at it. One of the best. I don't believe I can duplicate what Robert Jordan did. Would be nice, but he's 1 in a million and I'm not. I think there is an inherent feeling in Hollywood, and TV that their medium is the best. That books are not really important and games even less so. We saw this with the Halo TV show where they said they "didn't play the games so never felt limited by it being a game". Like games are somehow less than TV. They also think that anything old is outdated and wrong, and so they are "fixing" it. All this leads to the feeling that they can do anything, and in fact MUST change it, because it's it would be immoral not to. As to the book thing, I think Brandon Sanderson wrote like 13 books before he had any success. I've always liked the idea of compete against yourself, not other people as you wont know their stresses and struggles along the way. But if you keep improving a bit by bit day by day. In 10 years or more, you'll be on an entirely different level to today.

The most infuriating thing to me about the casting are all the other WoT channels being apologists for the choice, and employing incredible mental gymnastics. "Jordan never specifically stated Aiel are _white._ Pale doesn't mean _white."_ Actually, in this context, it very much does. Combine pale with the hair and eye colors, and there aren't many ethnic groups that fit the description. And that's if you want to just ignore Jordan's memoirs.
@BeholderThe1st2 жыл бұрын
Isn't it ironic that Jordan basically put white gingers as the people of the desert in his novels, breaking with stereotypes. But the first thing a bunch of woke progressives do, is through a stereotypical African ethnic woman to play someone from the desert tribes. Frankly, I just want good actors to play the roles, and where it doesn't matter, put what ever race you want, but the hypocrisy of wokesters never ceases to amaze.

@@Balandrus The thing is, we have official art of Aviendha from the WoT card game (way before Jordan's death), as well as the New cover of The Path of Daggers. There is no excuse. They should just come out and admit they don't care about the books, and have a bias against white people.
@Balandrus2 жыл бұрын
@@ViperRT99 Oh, I'm aware. Personally, I don't need extra sources. Jordan describes the look of every ethnic group to almost autistic detail, in the books. The mental gymnastics of the other "creators" I'm arguing with are truly baffling. I've used race swapping Tuon as an example, and they respond by saying she has very detailed descriptions, as Jordan describes her as black. It's funny that using the same type of descriptive language to describe white people makes them "not necessarily white."
