From everything I have read this series of books is the apex of the Dark Lord vs Chosen story, the main plot (Dragon vs Dark One) expands into great depths and offers a beautiful climax in the last 3 books.

Jordan does more than take inspiration from arthurian legend, with the cyclical nature of time, Artur Hawkwing is King Arthur, it’s a legend in our time that is a reference to an actual person in their time similar to when Thom references stories older than the age of legends they are tales about the Cold War, British empire, and the moon landing, actual events in our time, story’s fade to myth etc

I completely agree the similarities to Tolkien are a lot of the same you see in every epic fantasy. I think they might be compared a lot because there wasn’t as much fantasy around when they came out. I remember picking up Eye of the World from the store and there wasn’t a lot of series then to choose from. There was Goodkind, Brooks and a few others if my memory serves me well. I really should pick up this series and actually read through it all. I have read the first couple books a lot of times xD Love hearing your thoughts on this classic series!

Yes! I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees the similarities as just being a part of the genre! Especially all those "early" series from the 80's and 90's!

I was gifted a copy of The Hobbit when I was 7, so like yeah 23 years ago now ... lol and not only did it get me into fantasy books in general, but also writing! I reread it as my first book of the year, every year to remind me why I want to write. BUT ANYWAY! About WoT series -- it has been on my radar for awhile. A few friends wholeheartedly rec them. I should jump into the series soon. Maybe early next year (: The TBR pile I have is never ending and every day gets taller.

I'm glad you really enjoyed these first two books! (I love the series haha). I started to like the characters more as the books went on, and they became less annoying (to me). Mat annoyed me a lot in the beginning, but his character definitely goes through some growth at some point. Oh ugh yes the Children of Light, I hate them too. I hope you enjoy continuing on with the rest of the series!

yes, that's what I'm noticing! I'm actually starting to like Mat now haha

I agree, this series is nothing like Tolkien other than the classic tropes you mentioned. I read The Eye of the World a little less than a year ago and have finished the whole series and absolutely love it ! I convinced a friend to read it so that I could go back for a second read with her because I actually missed the characters, haha.

With so many characters from this series with different abilities, it would be fun to see you do hypothetical "who would win" battles with characters from other series.

Welcome to us WoT fans. Enjoy the ride. (A very common tell with new readers is to refer to The Dark One as ” the dark lord” . Of you’re a Darkfriend you might call him ”The Great Lord of the Dark” but us normal people would never say that)

@@SamsCozyCorner Oh. You're welcome! For an even more full first time experience (something I never got a chance of in my days) I'd suggest you also listen to the audiobooks and one or more of the first time readers' podcasts. A good podcast - with no spoilers- is kzbin.infoplaylists The audiobooks can usually be found free of charge on multiple sites online if you just want to try them out. I'm a huge WoT-fan so I end up buying them all, but that's just me. Many first time readers actaully do spoiler full reviews and they are a delight to hear even for us long ime fans, so we get to re-live what it was like "not knowing" . ehum... once again, Welcome to the community

The series can be viewed as a group of trilogies, so your idea of deep diving after TDR has some merit. I do not believe you're going to be able to deliver coherent reviews without spoilers, at least up to the point you're at in your reading. The metaphysics, the Foretelling, the characters development and the world being revealed will all force you to get into " spoilers " .
@SamsCozyCorner3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's kind of the route I figured I'd have to take - It's similar with Robin Hobb's books, once you get past the first two trilogies there's no way to do spoilers
