A ride on the bogey of a bm235 passenger car, going from Darmstadt main station to Darmstadt Kranichstein, in one of the shuttle trains for the Kranichstein Rail Worlds Days 2016. Top speed on the ride is 60 km/h (37.5 mph).
4:50 - Crossing a bridge that provides a view to the tracks underneath
5:20 - Darmstadt North station
8:15 - Darmstadt Kranichstein
The camera was steadily fastened and secured multiple times against falling down or interfering with safe operation of the train.

What's truly amazing is that very small contact patch of the wheel carries so much weight and concentrates it down into such a tiny area on the track and wheel itself.

@@Idiocracy343 i thought the coneshape is for driving curves. The wheels getting pushed to the side and the bigger diameter of the wheel runns outside, the smaler inside. it reduces the friction on the tracks. Its necessary because its a rigid axle. I used to think a train wheel is just a round , flat disc with a flange on one side. Later I learnt just how much complexity and science is there behind a modern train wheel ; how exact and precise its shape is. It is certainly not just a round, flat disc.

Fun fact : The wheels are conical. The wheels aren't cylindrical but a section of a double cone which helps the bogie to manoeuvre round the curves. Flange is for change of tracks.

I, however, just hope, that engineers do come up with derailment-proof design of both wheels and rails.. Even today, I get uneasy, if I am riding on train running at really superfast speeds....just a phobia though.
