A friend of mine is a C5 incomplete paraplegic and he needed help transferring into his car because a few times he was intoxicated and fell while trying to transfer from his wheelchair into his car. This video helped him out with proper technique. Thanks.

Thanks for the video I just recently switched from a folding chair to a rigid and this video has helped me out a lot. To throw out one more suggestion keep two towels in your car. One for the seat next to you for the wheelchair and the second is to cover yourself when transferring your chair into the car. Casters get dirty and will leave stains on your clothes which I found out the first time I loaded my chair in the rain. At least it wasn't my favorite shirt that got wet parking lot crud on it.

Hi, great video but everything is so easy because your wheelchair seems to be VERY small. What's the measure(width/depth)?

I really like the tips at 1:20, very important. This works even for SUVs and trucks. Keeping head down is most important. Sometimes putting one leg in first also works. He left out the super fun part though, that is where you hit yourself in the face with the chair and then knock the rear view mirror off. Ooops, spoiler alert :-)

This tip works fine for those that are able to transfer without a transfer board. I am a big guy T2 and I manage well with the wooden board for over 6 years. It is no shame to use a transfer board, and safer since it turns the WC more stable and well fixed in the ground with your weight. I rather have the Wheels behind the passenger backseat since my WC is bigger.

Who said it was shameful? I don't recall Marty saying anything like that. What if you were somewhere where you couldn't get your board...or let's say it fell. I agree with him. Today all these people rely on Lexus or Siri or whatever gadget. How would you manoeuvre or get along with out them. THAT'S what he was saying...learn how to do things without then IN CASE you don't have them. Those reasons you gave...you're a big guy...if your wheelchair is bigger..it kind of insinuates you have extra weight to carry around or are tall. Try and lose it and see if things aren't easier. Keep a reacher with you. I also know this was 6 years ago...it just came in my newsfeed.

What kind of a wheelchair do you have? I am in a wheelchair for a while from Toxins from Breast Implant Illness. I cannot get my current wheelchair in and out of my Jeep by myself. It is frustrating because I don't like depending on anyone and love going places by myself! My legs are weak but I can stand for a short time if leaning on something. You are so inspiring.

I use the inside handles to help me get in my car this makes it so easy to get in. Problem with that is not every car has them so thanks I was wondering how everyone else did it. The other problem is getting out. Can't use those handles for getting out so I have to pull myself out of the car. I do put some strain on my shoulders so I'm going to practice this technique instead. How about getting in and out of higher seats like a truck? Anything different you would suggest?

No the problem with that is they are basically clothes hangers (like for a suit or something) and not meant to take the weight. I grab the steering wheel...that kind of pulls me in.

I use a thick towel to cover the area where my chair meets the vehicle. Going slow helps too

Good video but its easier to get in when one legs is already in the car. If you have your both legs out of the car as in the video the right leg pulles against the direction you are going making the transfer harder and more strenuous

HI, I am a T2/T3 SCI and the best choice is 2 door coupe. With 2 doors you will have more room to get the WC inside. I have a Rigid Frame Tilite. I put the backrest down and then I remove the wheels first, place them behind the passenger seat which is adjusted way to the back and with the backseat very low. Almost on a sleeping mode position. This will allow the wheels behind it, to be well fitted avoiding noise or having them sliding on curves. Also avoids damage in your car. After that, lay down your seat so you have room to put the frame inside. Also put your seat way back because the most you open the space between your body and the steering wheel easier it gets to slide the frame over your body. Place it over the passenger seat with the front wheels upwards and in front, close to your dashboard. The space in the passenger seat between the backrest and the WC frame fill it with your roho cushion so it holds the chair firmly. I also have small home depot rugs in both side of the frame to avoid damage on the central arm rest and passenger door. The same sequence in the way out. I had a Dodge Challenger which is the best in my opinion since it also fits the WC and wheels in the trunk when you have friends with you, and it is easy to do this process. Now I have a Mercedes C250 coupe, but the trunk is small and I need to have the wheels always in the back seat and can´t fit 4 anymore, but it is worth for me the other features of the car and I never had 4 on my car anyway. Another good car that I am planning to take a look is the 2 door Golf GTI. Good luck!

This has been very helpfull, thanks Mr Martini. I have been Para (T11) for 10 years now and have been transfering without boards etc from a year into my injury. However, i never have tried to keep my head low when getting into my car. Great tip! I will try that today. As you say, it should save my shoulders in the long run. A light rigid chair is key too easy car transfer in my opinion. I have a Kuschall K series and it is a hell of a lot lighter than my old tank. I notice your foot strap is set pretty short. Your achilles tendon must be very supple still. Any tips on avoiding the dreaded "pixy feet"?
