Not surprised at all. When the discharge alarm went off at my college, I could hear it all the way from a closed door in the old building. Meanwhile the -9838's are so tame at least one person mistook them for a buzzing cell phone.

@Fahrenheit4051 That sounds like the '9833s in the Pierce building at Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center, next to the gym, if not worse. It makes me suspect a problem with the wiring or the Simplex 2001 FACP, which BTW, is in continuous. There's zero march-time modules. And in front of the PE teacher office, the '9833 that was there, randomly failed. :( I have a hunch about a wiring issue in the gym area. (next to the gym, seems real quiet)

@@RJARRRPCGP The 9838's at the college are working fine. They're just much quieter than the Exceder. Not to mention they're a tad bit widely-spaced, and the floors in the old building are carpeted, which absorbs some of the sound.

Nice experiment! iPhones are really bad at picking up low frequency’s, since the Exceeder is really high pitched it would usually say it’s louder. Were they both set to high volume?

Loved the vid but different iPads iPhone have different mics so some are better some are worse but I got an exceder horn only and I put it right next to it I got a max of 122dba !

Not that surprised by the results; the System Sensor L series is noticeably softer than its' predecessor the SpectrAlert Advance. Any other alarms that matched THAT's volume are the Wheelock AS and the Simplex TrueAlert.

Can you redo the test with the alarms in continuous? Id think having the alarms in code 3 would make the test inaccurate with the pauses.

They tested the Fire Alarm in my apartment building, and we have the Wheelock NS horns, which is obviously what the Exceder is based on. I was purposely out of my apartment at the time, but had it caught on video via my Nest Dropcams. I was able to tell it was quite loud from the video (especially since one of the NS horn/strobes was directly in my bedroom).

I'm so glad I work in a hospital where most of our alarms are chimes. Also, it would seem odd to have a fire alarm go off right next to you, but I when I am on a ladder working on something I sometimes have a fire alarm right next to my face. In some areas that alarm is an L Series or an NS. Which are indeed very loud.

@Ian Graves At my old middle school, they put the exceeder horn strobes in the bathrooms. That was always the last place I wanted to be when they went off. They were so loud that you could hear them from across the street from the school.

Do a decibel test of the Wheelock MT-24-LSM, because at my previous middle school(I’m in high school now) I was in a portable for my study skills class and the alarm in that room was a Wheelock MT-24-LSM(made before 2002, so it has a vertical strobe), and it literally raped my ears no matter how far away I was
