Curaçao vs Mexico (Elimination Game) | Winner to International Championship | 2023 LLWS Highlights

Curacao and Mexico played in an Elimination Game in the 2023 LLWS. The winner would advance to the International Championship Game on Saturday against Chinese Taipei.
Covering sports in a unique way since 2018.

Curacao is technically the 2-time defending International champion (2019, 2022). That being said, they will need an absolute gem from Wiel on the mound and a lot of luck to be able to beat Taiwan. Don't count them out just yet though Edit: Wiel didn't pitch until the final two batters, but Curacao got an amazing pitching performance from Helmijr and a little luck. And that's all they needed. Congrats to the now 3-time defending LLWS international champions.

Last year, Taiwan keep their Ace pitcher and lose. This year Taiwan should put Ace pitcher to face Curaçao. If Taiwan put other pitchers to face Curaçao, there is a slim chance Curaçao could win.

@@chung-chitien4650that’s how I’d play it. I think they stand a better chance w/their #2 vs whoever the Americans put forth than vs Curaçao. Although I don’t really know, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Curaçao is better equipped to adjust to CT’s fireballer. His offspeed rarely landed for strikes so far so maybe if there’s a team left that can hit his fastball it’s Curaçao. That said, I’d still take my chances pitching him Saturday.

cant believe the number of batters looking at strike 3 in this tournament. especially at end of games and with the strike zone the way it is, it boggles the mind. Can someone explain why every team has their batters standing as close to the plate as possible? i can see because of expanded zone for outside pitches but it makes it almost impossible to hit inside pitches. very weird strategy these teams have.

Some umps give 6 to 10 inches off the outside corner so it’s impossible for a kid to even reach a pitch with the bat unless they are standing as close as possible.

Top 6th 2 outs.. the player running to second got of of the baseline by ALOT. That being said he’s out and should’ve ended the inning regardless of the play at 1st. Horrible umpires man. That shouldn’t fly, costed Mexico the game.

I agree, they say the rule is that he's only out if he's avoiding a tag. Well he was so far out of the baseline that he avoided the tag by being nowhere even remotely close to being tagged. He was on the infield grass. Should have been called out immediately. The umpires are really bad. The first base umpire made a call that he clearly didn't see because he slipped, he had 2 calls overturned. The plate umpires have been pretty lousy too. Calling pitches really far outside strikes. This plate umpire wasn't that bad today but he should have immediately called that runner out. Oh well, Curacao will be destroyed by Taiwan.

Rematch of last years international championship is set. And while I do favor Taiwan to win, I can never count out Curaçao. They are so good in tough pressure situations. They always win low scoring games.

Mexico got screwed in the 6th. That 3rd out that got overturned when the score was 1-1... yes the runner was safe at 1st base, but the 2nd baseman fields the ball in a perfect position to tag the runner headed to 2nd base, causing the runner to go WAY outside the base path to avoid him, forcing the throw to 1st base. The umps should have called that runner out, which would have ended the inning. Instead Curacao went on to score a few more runs and win the game. Mexico should entered the bottom of the 6th with a tie game and a chance to win, or at least go into extra innings.

The runner moved away to avoid interference to the fielder (not to avoid the tag), that's right thing to do. The fielder failed to show the intent to tag. If he attempted to tag, the runner would be called out. The commentator's comment also suggests the same idea. It's a tough fielder's choice, should be in fielding textbook for young players.

Mexicos defense let them down. Not only the errors but bad decisions. Throwing to first instead of getting the force out at 2nd with 2 outs led to the game being tied. And throwing to first instead of tagging the runner on the grounder to 2nd led to Curaçao taking the lead.

Wow was rooting for Mexico but fundamental mistakes really costed them. Offense was rather lackluster this tournament besides the game with Canada but otherwise, great experience for the kids. Taiwan all the way now!
