I really appreciate that he doesn't shy away from other styles and put himself in a box

The fact that he’s doing that on an orchestra horn is INSANE. How in the world is he still that good at jazz?!

Respect for going for it. Mastered the classical side. Who knows what kind of monster he’d be if he’d started as a jazz guy.

I’m sorry but it’s so refreshing to hear him chip a note. Also pleasantly surprised by harmonic nod at 1:09, come on now! Love seeing him step out and go for it. Thanks for the upload

So great to hear Alessi play some jazz for once and a while. Just prove he's such a talented player!

Huge respect for giving it a go, nice tone and intonation. The articulation wasn't particularly jazzy though, I guess that's something that comes with practice and experience

Right? Makes sense, as he’s dedicated his life to getting the cleanest tones & articulations possible. It must go against decades of dedication & soft machine programming to even attempt to play dirty.

@@boneuhfide I was classically trained as a guitarist and improvising was so weird at first, but it was so fun to mess around as I got looser. Jazz ends up just helping your musicianship regardless of what you play

Well, Alessi has had many years to get better with his jazz, with all the resources and chances he gets to play. This is quite good, tbh.

The jazz musician thinks, "I can't wait to hear what I'll play. It should be sorta like..." The classical muso, post Liszt, knows exactly. I'd love to hear a repeat performance of this. Is this where the bourbon can weave its decoupling magic? Pretty bloody awesome though.

I wonder if I could have noticed he wasn't a jazzman to begin with if the title hadn't given me the information first. Because his tone feels very different from the jazz trombone I've heard. Maybe it's just because it was a very laid back piece though, but I can't shake the feeling that he's a little less... rough around the edges than what I'm used to hearing on this kind of channel

You can tell he isn’t a jazzer because it actually sounds like a trombone rather than a adenoidal trumpet, a properly formed sound rather than the breathy, weak bleat so beloved of players on the tiniest bore pea-shooters.

One of the world's leading orchestral /classical trombonists. A monster player, showing us that no matter how good you are technically, it doesn't mean you can play a different genre by default. Honestly I was embarrassed watching this.
