@@ahoardersheart things are opening up. The infection rate is steady for daily numbers, which I guess is ok. 400ish cases daily in an area of 2-6 million I suppose is low. And I decluttered some old plant pots. We save the plastic ones you buy plants in so we can propagate plants and give them away or sell them, (or start seeds in) but they were getting crazy with their numbers and odd sizes, so took a bunch to lowes today. Filled up the gas tank for the first time in 2 months too. 296 miles in 2 months. Bought tp for the first time in 6 months too (I still have probably 2-3 months worth left, but if theres another run on tp, I want my 3-6 month supply on hand. "Secret Sister" thing sounds fun - but isn't it a slippery slope for someone trying to recover from hoarding? Don't get me wrong, I totally LOVE the idea of it - I just worry they're leaving you knick knack, tchotchke items that you now need to find a place for in your home, which you're working so hard to declutter. Is there any way to steer the contents to consumables?
@ahoardersheart4 жыл бұрын
You are so very right! In our list of favorites things for secret sisters...I did write mostly food, snacks, or gift cards for drive through like Chick Fila! Since they personally know me, they know I have a big personality and did buy some Knick knack things. They don’t know about my hoarding yet...at least that Mommy group doesn’t know yet. But it is such a wonderful surprise to come home and find a blessing bag on your porch step!! There’s a drop off once a week so I just need to be mindful of it!!! (Maybe regift stuff too? Share the blessing!!!)

@@ahoardersheart sounds like a good idea to regift some things, if you know that your not gonna have a spot for it and another mommy would love it too, then for sure pass the gift!
@laululla4 жыл бұрын
If you don't know from who you get the gift I would find it a bit risky to regift... As I could end up giving back all the things from the on who gave it to me. Could you try to change the group into food/baking sharing? I know it takes bit more time to cook or bake, but perhaps making turns longer, like every other week... I would find it so amazing to get some help with cooking rather than getting plastic objects that aren't really usefull. And i would not need to be ready baked, it could be ingredients and a recipe, pre-measured cake, gift card to a local cafe...

@@ahoardersheart I think there should be room in your life to get things from your friends. I think the most important part is that you work on getting the stuff out of the bag, which you are aware of. I think it's worth investigating if the silly string decomposes or if its causing rubbish on the street? As I've come to find minimalism, there's a huge environmental aspect to it, where I no longer buy plastic toys / organisers / presents etc because I know that they'll outlive our generation and probably 9 generations after that, in a landfill. Environment isn't everyone's reason for decluttering, but it's an idea I want to chuck out there - like quality over quantity ❤️
@goldfishsnake4 жыл бұрын
I thought of this too - make sure silly string or stuff you throw from the car is biodegradable. I tend to be very minimal for holidays and celebrations and just focus on making my friends and family feel loved with quality time or a handwritten note, or go out for dinner or drinks. I very rarely give gifts and if I do I give consumables like homemade food or a bottle of wine. most people don't need more stuff in the form of gifts. i've never been given a candle, coffee mug, face mask, etc etc and thought omg! finally! it's more like, eh great I don't really want or need this and now I have to find a use for this or give it away. it's almost like giving me a chore or a mental burden to figure out how to dispose or something. oh and I never ever buy gift wrap. I have some plain craft paper and fabric scraps from my hobbies so I'll just use something from around the house if I really need to wrap something.

Hi. You've made such great progress in your rooms, and I am rooting for you! I also just watched your kitchen remodel episodes. May I suggest something? Find another spot in your home to stage gifts, not a floor in your kitchen. You are doing double and triple work. Don't hide that beautiful pantry cabinet your husband built. Since you understand Flylady's system, make it a part of your before bed routine to clean off these hotspots. Don't let anyone drop stuff there. We once had a chimney fire, and I was mortified the fireman saw my clutter. Another time we were on vacation, and my neighbor called the cops because she checked my house, and we had accidentally left a door unlocked. The house was a mess, and I was so embarrassed. (So now before we go on a trip, I clean like crazy the day before.) You are my inspiration for the closet and basement decluttering I need to do.

I watch all of your videos and am a big cheerleader for you - this video definitely makes me want to "devil's advocate" to you though! It seems like holidays / birthdays/ celebrations are a big spending trigger for you. granted I don't have kids so I can see how that introduces more birthday parties into your life, but it seems like you spend a lot of time, money, and mental energy on essentially single-use things and I wonder if you have internalized an "obligation" to decorate and buy sugary things for every party or celebration. for instance, you always seem to find old candy - this might be a signal that you and your kids don't really want as much candy as you're buying (versus when I was a kid there was never a gram of sugar left in our house that we wouldn't find and eat asap!) And I have to wonder how much of the decor is more for YOU than it is for the other person - would you son have a worse birthday without a yard sign, candy, a brand new cartoon-character-printed gift bag? Are the things you're spending money on really required to give someone a nice birthday? It might be something for you to examine within yourself, e.g. maybe giving gifts is YOUR love language, but not the other person's, so you're ultimately spending your own money on things that don't matter to the other person and not making them any happier, cluttering your home or theirs, and kind of wasting your time and money. what would happen if you didn't spend ANY time, mental energy, or money on parties? what would happen if you cut those things in HALF? how much time, mental energy, and money do you WANT to spend on parties? again, just devils advocating to spur some thought for you. I definitely get the sense that giving gifts is your love language and it brings you joy, but it can be good to consider (a) does the other person even want or need this? and (b) if I didn't do/buy any of these things, would this celebration actually suffer?

Silly string can clog sewer systems and it's plastic that doesn't biodegrade plus it's hard to clean up. If animals eat it they die . Maybe consider an alternative to squirting that in the parades? A lot of cities have actually banned silly string for this reason. Maybe if you cut up some scraps of cute coloured paper and threw it likr confetti? Someone could pick it up and also it would break down in the environment.

You know? Totally agree - I despair of the amount of plastic bags still used by shops. Soft plastics such as bags always end up in landfill, their manufacturing process is toxic and if they end up in waterways, bays and oceans will kill our wonderful marine life by strangling turtles and fish. If you’ve ever seen marine rescue vids on you tube - it’s heartbreaking. Please dear people, don’t buy or use plastics bags and avoid purchasing items in plastic packaging. It’s the step before recycling - avoid consuming them as recycling is only a small part of the solution.

You are doing so much better! the pile was an "organised chaos" compared to the past, there was a difference to it. You have a lot on your plate and you are getting there...I was thinking two things, suggestions if possible. 1. maybe you should create a designated "landing area" for things until you get to bring them to their place. We need to be real and study our habits. When you are coming back with stuff, you do need to put it somewhere and many times there are a million other things to do before. What about a designated area in the laundry room? a basket that you will then make a habit of clearing out x times a week? 2. I think keeping things in plastic bags confuses you more because you do not know what is inside and it makes more of a mess. What about emptying the bags as soon as you get home into the designated basket so you then only have the contents in sight? Just a few thoughts, rooting for you always!

Good job on cleanup. First thing, however, don't take the organizational thing down there. Find a home for it. Don't buy anymore organizing items unless they have a specific home and purpose. Second, anything you receive as a gift in a bag should be thrown out of the bag like little kids do to their candy at Halloween. Then find a home for what you received and put the bag in recycling. That way the gift is serving its intended purpose that the giver had intended for you. Can't wait to see how the new floors turn out.
