I’d always doubted that anybody could touch this song with the depth of soul the great Percy Sledge demonstrated so many years ago. Gregg Allman came as close as it’s gonna get. Some critics may unfairly claim that he was simply performing a “remake” of one of the greatest of all R&B Soul love ballads, but I disagree. I happen to be one of those folks who believe, especially when it comes to music: If it ain’t broke why try ‘n fix it? I also do not happen to believe that this song can be “improved upon,” and I suspect Gregg Allman would’ve agreed. He was simply reminding folks, especially young ones, how fine music used to sound and those which were his inspiration for the music he would later produce.

Yep, My brother got me into a Percy Sledge concert in the 60's. Percy was sweating and singing his heart out, especially this song. Since I am now 70 years old, I remember the Allman brothers and all their greatness. And I do like Gregg's version of this song here, but these younger people that say this is the best, they have not experienced Percy Sledge's version
