That's because the UI is mostly empty with just some UI components on it, which can be seen at one glance whereas the IDE is full of source code, which needs constant staring to read. Looking at code for a few minutes in light mode is no big deal but if someone is looking at the code the whole day, the better have dark mode to not strain their eyes.

I feel like the dark mode with the high contrast coloring helps me pick out the color coding easier and faster so I spend less time scrolling. The browser has to be in light mode though because that's how 90% of people are going to view it. I keep the terminal in dark mode too, though I go with red text and a red backlight on the keyboard. I started learning c a d c++ on code block and yeah it's light theme by default but tbh I don't mind, tho now I just use visual studio
