Isn't it frustrating when a toddler doesn't seem to want to play with toys? This is a fairly common issue for young children with developmental delays. Our first instinct may be to think that the child doesn't like the toy (or any toy!), but that's usually not the problem. Join pediatric speech-language pathologist Laura Mize, M. S., CCC-SLP of teachmetotalk.com as she explains what's really going on and teaches you the perfect place to start to help a child learn to play with toys. It's a strategy called DECONSTRUCTION and it's a powerful way to help a toddler begin to play.
Read the entire post at Laura's website, teachmetotalk.com. which includes links for purchasing toys which are fantastic for using this strategy and for a podcast explaining this technique in great detail:

Thanks so very much for these videos! I'm a new SLPA and these videos are just great for understanding how to think about planning a therapy session with my non-verbal kiddos.

Hey Laura! We met at KSHA this year (I was the one who mentioned how I listen to your podcasts so much that I feel like your voice is in my head when I am talking to parents in EI sessions...haha!). I am glad to see that you are back with Therapy Tips of the Week. You have inspired me to make my own videos on my channel for speech therapy ideas here on KZbin at "Learn With Adrienne" :) Hope you are having a great weekend Laura!

Awesome video! I am also an SLP and have been working for several years, but am relatively new to pre-k students (many of which are language delayed and on the ASD spectrum). I loved your ideas! I will be using these ASAP. Especially the idea for adapting the books!
