When an Israeli F-15 Eagle Landed Without One Wing In 1983

On May 1st, 1983, an Israeli F-15 Baz and an A-4 Skyhawk came into collision over the Negev desert while they were carrying out air combat training. The A-4 pilot ejected right away from his damaged aircraft, but the F-15's case was different. The Eagle crew was surprised to discover that the F-15's whole wing had ripped off, as they had initially been unable to comprehend the scope of the damage. Pilot Zivi was interested in landing the aircraft, while navigator Yehoar wanted to jump out. The pilot quickly activated the afterburners, and the lift generated by the F-15's intact wing and huge portions of its fuselage enabled the pilot to restore the grip of the aircraft. The landing occurred at twice the usual speed, and about 20 feet from the runway's end, the F-15 came to an abrupt stop. McDonnell Douglas later discovered that the F-15 had transformed into a lifting-body aircraft. A fixed-wing aircraft layout with a lifting body is one in which the body generates lift autonomously. The firm informed the pilot that the F-15 Eagle has a very wide body, that he flew swiftly enough, that he was like a rocket, and that he didn't require wings.

Rumor says he wasn't a navigator but a flight instructor. Front seater was a student and was reprimanded for not ejecting. The front seater acts as an aircraft commander and the back seater needs to follows his orders no matter how much higher rank or experience has. The more experienced back seater pretty much commanded the ejection, but front seater overruled and risked both of their lives. All in all - good thing that the plane was saved, bad thing that the lives were endangered.

This accident likely happened due to a drill that IDF pilots used to do. Before they had stealth, they would fly wing to wing in very tight groups (like a Blue Angels show) to appear as a single radar contact. This would mean that the enemy would misjudge their numbers, as a single jet on radar could turn out to be 4 jets in actual combat. It was crazy dangerous, but very effective.

Yeah, I’ve never heard about this before. But ya know what, that’s definitely on brand for my Jewish brethren. When you’re outnumbered hundreds to one by people who view your very presence as an insult to 1400 years of religious imperialism and conquest and have vowed to recolonize your indigenous lands, ya come up with ingenious, albeit slightly insane, ways to get things done.
@theprogressivecynic2407
@theprogressivecynic2407 10 ай бұрын
@@samlevi4744 Exactly. Look up Operation Rimon 20 for an example of this tactic employed to incredible effect. The USSR sent some of their pilot trainers to Egypt to help them reconstitute their air force after the 1967 defeat. Only, the Egyptian pilots they trained kept getting taken down and so the trainers were getting frustrated. They went out to attack a single IAF patrol jet in the Sinai to show the Egyptians how it was done--only that one jet was 4 flying wingtip to wingtip, with 8 more jets flying below radar cover. 12 USSR pilots squared up against the 12 IAF pilots, resulting in 5 USSR jets being taken out (pilots KIA), with only minor damage to 1 IAF jet. Egypt loved this, because they got proof that their pilots weren't incompetent; they just didn't compare with the insane skill of the IAF. However, both the USSR and Israel were in an awkward position, as the USSR was given proof that their pilots were just categorically inferior to the IAF's, while Israel REALLY wanted to avoid a hot war against the USSR (they thought the ambush would be against Egyptian pilots). Basically, both sides agreed to memory-hole the entire battle and pretend it never happened. This let the USSR save face, and Israel avoid escalation.

What a pilot!!! To stay calm enough in a jet that just had a mid-air collision and be able to figure out how to keep it airborne. All while your navigator is wanting to eject. That's one badass dude. But yeah, the jet is nice too.

That is an incredible pilot there ! Of course the wings are the major lift for the plane ....... though in this situation you can use the flaps to compensate for the loss of the wing to control the plane ...... In short , this man knew what he was doing , knew his equiptment and is a badass mfer 🙏
@jamessaunders2559
@jamessaunders2559 10 ай бұрын
Looking at the landing, the right wing sheared off and left flaps were down so if the aircraft wasn’t stable enough, the pilot would have had to reduce throttle on the left engine to give the remaining wing some slack. If that model had 4-6 vertical thrusters then 2 on the right side could also be used as stabilizers.

Yeah, IDF pilots are absolute lunatics. This accident almost certainly happened during one of their combat drills for pre-stealth flying. They didn't have low-visibility jets, and so they learned how to fly so close that their radar signatures blurred into one. For example, during Operation Rimon 20. USSR jets (working for Egypt) tried to intercept "one" IDF jet, only to realize that it was 4 flying wing to wing, with 4 more flying below 100ft to avoid radar. They lost 5 of the 12 jets they sent, only causing minor damage to one IDF jet. It was a big scandal that was basically memory-holed by both nations because it was horrifically embarrassing for the USSR's Air Force, and dangerous for Israel because they didn't want the USSR to increase aid to their enemies.
