Fergus never got the respect he deserves tbh. He saved our history our club and everything in between. Legend of a man. Yes he never spent big when rangers went for 10 but the club today is thanks to him. For me he has been the most significant man of my 42 years of supporting celtic footbal club. We could of died like the zombies across the city but thanks to Fergus he saved us. Legend

Totally agree. I was mortally embarrassed by the absolute roasters who swallowed the absolute nonsense in The Daily Record and Scottish Sun at the time (that 'one is Saddam, one is Fergus' headline etc) and who booed him back in the day - the same roasters you can guarantee now will claim not to have booed him. I genuinely hope whoever booed Fergus is still ashamed of themselves. He had the foresight 1) that spending beyond your means was unsustainable, and 2) to stand up to the troublemakers (Van Hooijdonk, Cadete, Di Canio). Both 1) and 2) were unpopular decisions at the time, but Fergus was proved absolutely right as he was time and time again. Saved the club, built the stadium, the shares issue, spending wisely, Henrik f'ing Larsson - McCann absolutely NAILED it and built the foundations of the club as we know it. If you told me in January '94 while we were in threat of going under, playing in a decrepit, run down stadium, toiling on the pitch with basically a Sunday League team (apart from McStay, Collins and Boyd) with Lou Macari as manager, that a 60,000 seater stadium, league titles, doubles, trebles, a UEFA Cup final and one of the greatest players we have ever seen in the hoops were just around the corner, I would have laughed at you. There should be a statue to McCann outside the stadium, quite frankly.

@@theflyintheointment should defo be a statue tbh. The passion in your comment was bang on bro. Love it. We could of ended up like the manky mob if the wee man never stepped up and done what he done. Look at our beautiful stadium right now thanks to him. Sitting in the temporary stand looking round and thinking this place is gonna be actual paradise when finished. He done what he set out to do then moved on but for me he will never be forgotten. I'm so glad he helped celtic and done what he done cos Look what happened to the manky mob. Lol. They died and the fans are still hurting years later so that could of been celtic if not for the man in the bunnet

Also watching the documentary back on stetanta tv was great. A think it was the man who saved celtic. Great watch if you haven't seen it. Its on KZbin

@@DeanCunningham-q1z I agree that McCann made some astute decisions and signings especially Larsson, but " our beautiful stadium" is probably pushing it a bit. It looks nasty and cheap from the outside, like something on an Industrial Estate and it will need much in the way of a refurbishment or more within the next 10 years!
@DeanCunningham-q1z2 ай бұрын
@@KryptonitetoallBS yeh your right tbh but at the time it was one of the best stadium about. A watched from start to finish. Going to hampden coming back to parkhead with the temporary stand to 50,000 stunner. Yes now it needs upgrading but 20 odd years ago it was beautiful really beautiful. When you think back in your mind of standing in the jungle to full seater was amazing man

The Jim Kerr/Bono rumours were also swirling around the club (or more accurately fanbase and the tabloids) before Fergus McCann arrived, during the early '90s and our very own 'cracked club crest on the back page of every tabloid newspaper everyday' days. Both times, in '94 and '98, it always felt half-arsed and like there was no real substance to it, other than that Kerr and Bono were 'Celtic daft', had a lot of money, and therefore it was an easy connection to make. It never felt like a real, solid proposition. Any interest they MIGHT have had merely felt like self-publicity.

This is not rubbish and also Willie Haughey and Vera Weisfield were also interested

McCann saw through that for the disaster it would have been.
