There are even rare flesh eating BACTERIUM that crawl up a urin stream when urinating in a fresh water system, and yes they're in America as well. And there are even more intelligent ways to avoid that when camping, hiking, or wilderness survival. Too many people fail to think of all the potential risks involved when doing anything anymore.

While I was doing a traveling nurse assignment in southeast Oklahoma, my friend I spent time with warned me that we wouldn't be able to swim in the lake near her house later in the summer because of the amoebae. Having grown up in Wisconsin, I had no idea the risk was so high but, as she had two young children, and having grown up in the region, she knew what time it was and wasn't taking chances. I live in Washington State and used to do a lot of swimming in the clod water lakes in the mountains, as well as in the warmer waters around the Puget Sound. I also had spent time in some of the hot springs but never submerged fully in them. As a nurse down there, ironically shortly after we had last gone swimming, I had an ICU patient with this infection. He died because his family, people who had relocated there from Montana, were unaware of the risks of swimming in those waters in the hotter summer months and thought their son simply had the flu or a cold. He was 19 when he died.

When I was 16 years old my tennis coach contracted encephalitis from a mosquito bite! We were in shock because of how rare we were told it was to contract! He was also put into a medically induced coma & was in rehab for a long time. Sadly he was unable to return to teaching tennis. Due to minor brain damage his reaction time became slower. It was extremely sad because that was his life & at one point in his life he even taught some professional tennis players. He was an incredibly strong & determined man though. I had the pleasure of watching him practice tennis again because my grandparents lived & belong to that country club. To see a man like that who was unable to even walk months prior back on the tennis court practicing again literally made my grandma & I cry! I was able to see him & give him a big hug after but it was quite strange because even his speech had changed which kind of caught me off-guard because I was young and I didn't know exactly everything that had happened to him. Still a wonderful man with a love for life that was truly a fighter! I wish I knew how he was doing now and I hope he only continued to get better! ❤️

According to your logic then, most people DO wander into cattle pasturage. Um, not really. Also, your bs about reasoning with and taming a cow is ludicrous! Unless you're the cow whisperer, that just ain't happening, bub. You're existence and experiences in life aren't universal. There are tons of places where the inhabitants spend great deal of time at or in the river that is part of their existence. Fishing, bathing and doing laundry on a daily basis there. If you don't know anything about a subject, it's best to take Mark Twain's advice. It's better to let people think you are an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

@Nyxtroos It may be true that your average city dwellers don't swim in rivers, you are completely ignoring South America where life revolves around the Amazon River. It’s also not a bacteria. Most people don’t have biology degrees to know differently but it’s a simple mistake they shouldn’t make with their research.

Wow, was not expecting to see our Sweet Lillie Mae on here, her sweet momma makes sure kids have plugs now, for free, to stop this from happening! If anyone ever needs them, you can message her and she will send them off! Bless, y'all this little girl was an angel, with a fiery/funny personality! This is a scary thing, we believed she would beat it, but it's really hard! Just shocked it was on this!

I won't go near swimming pools or water parks after contracting bells palsy via a virus I got at a water park. I've had it for 30 years and only had two episodes of it but man it sucks when it happens.
