Becky I love all your videos. I just got finished buying 12 baby chicks. All hens. 10 are 1 week old and 2 are 4 days old. I have almost 3 acers of land. I also have meat rabbits. Their poop is good for my garden I have. I am learning much from your videos. There are many videos about chickens, but yours buy far my favorite.

Here in Central Maine because of bitter cold and lots of snow, I have a coop to protect them from the elements. I only let my girls out when temps are 25 or above. I don't usually get my chicks until the end of April, beginning of May. Once they have feathers and I have them accumulated to the weather without a heat lamp, I move them outside to free range using a wire fence. Usually about late August, is when I add them to the main flock and that seems to work for me. Thanks for this video. Many blessings.

We fed chickens in the morning, and let them free range. (worked great, until fox). But the chickens, were eating, and a wild bird flew down, and decided to join them in a meal. The chickens tore him apart, it was shocking to see the chickens act so violent.

Hi Becky! Great video! I'm only 11 and i just got two chicks a few days ago and your videos have been the most helpful. Everything else I have watched and read doesn't explain about the stages of care between a fully grown chicken and a chick so thanks so much! Keep making videos and helping others in their care too! Yes I lost 8 chickens in a year from being egg bound and from predators, lately was my dog a month ago my dog was 7 years old and kill 2 chickens until last month. Isis was ill with cancer I don’t know but she was very sick I think. The chicken she was pet pet chicken she was 3. And Isis kill another chicken 2 days later so I put her down. I had another chicken kill by a predator she was another favorite of mine she was a Frizzle Batam. A chicken being egg bound is hard because there no chicken doctor around from me so I soak chicken in warm water after one die of being egg bound they were Batam’s . I lost a big Buff Orpington being egg bound both deaths are heartbreaking.

Hi. I am in Spain and just starting out with chickens. We have 4 50 day old Cornish/Plymouth Rock hens and 4 little Dutch chicks (15 days old) and one “American cock”. Big learning curve. Had to strengthen the coop already as we had a “break in” maybe one of the local “wild cats”. Really appreciate your up best approach.

Your PVC coop is very cleaver and economical, but it is not predator safe. I can see that being used in an adult coop. If your adult coop is predator safe. That way the birds grow accustom to each other over a good length of time without the bickering.

Great video Becky! We use chicken tractors made with cattle panels , hardware cloth and chicken wire. We usually move chicks from our brooder to a chicken tractor at about 12 weeks old. Our chicken tractors are also inside of an solar powered electric poultry fence. So far so good. Coyotes and other predators have not been able to get to them. Happy trails!

Nice video, before my family moved we had six chicks we kept them in a tub until they were to big then we got a small coop for them, after they got bigger we made a regular coop and fenced them in but we still gave them enough space and now they’re almost full grown adults.

I let my week old chicks out everyday for 2 hrs, im their helicopter mom im super protective. I just thought they need some sunlight lol. Theyre so cute they dust bath on their own in the garden. They also have a small perch in their box, they dont sleep on it but they like to hang out there during the day. Im sprouting some wheat just to see if they'll eat it, and made a mini vermiculture bottle for some maggots. I love my chicks so much: Lemon, Plum, Strawberry and Tangerine. I think I spoil them too much, they get treats daily, lettuce, tomatoes, melon, watermelon, and freshly caught flies.

My only real concern would be how would you prevent predators from getting into this, say by digging under or just pushing it up with their noses and crawling under it?

Aubrey any land predator would have no problem getting in there, so this wouldn’t be a good coop. It’s more to keep chickens in rather than predators out.Unless you have some portable electric netting to make perimeter around this, you would need a studier coop.

@@tenderplacebo I was thinking the same, here in the Midwest it probably wouldn't work. We have some determined preditors . A farm dog is a good idea but there again the winters can get so cold and we have some dangerous preditors that would put the dog in danger as well.

Thankfully I don't have any chickens now but I have cats in three and the preditor didn't harm the cat but I realized now that I have a preditor able to tear open the chicken wire I can't put anything like a chicken in it.

Great video but I think there are a few key points missing. Predator control. I’m sure you take measures but new chicken tenders might not be aware of what it takes. For the noobs: With a flimsy coop like that predator control is a serious concern. A livestock guardian animal like a dog or donkey would be good. I use a two wire electric fence and yet to have a problem with ground predators. We have a couple of barn cats to keep rodents under control which in turn keeps the snakes down.

Chickens would not last one week in a coop like that here in the N.E. . Raccoons, foxes, coyotes, possums, weasels, etc. would eat them in a heartbeat. Further south, predatory snakes would slide in there and eat those baby chicks and/or eggs right up. That coop would not stop a medium or large dog either. Winter winds would rip those blankets off and destroy that coop also. You must live in a rarefied area of Florida without predators.

That coop is 7 years old and I use it all the time. Believe me predators are everywhere. The other night a FL panther was out there. Farm dogs keep my chickens safe, plus I have a mule and donkey. ☀️❤️☀️

It depends on it you'll have a heat lamp in the coop or not. Chicks need heat for about the first 6 weeks of life. Once they get all their feathers in then they dont need to heat lamp. I usually keep my babies inside with a heat lamp then each week raise the lamp higher until they've gotten all their feathers in. Then I move then into a small coop that I have inside my big coop. That way they can get used to my big girls & then when I feel that they've grown big enough I let them out with the big girls.
