Jouelzy, I just want to take a moment to thank you and express my appreciation for the book club. I’ve been a subscriber for years, and I remember when the concept of the book club was first introduced. You took your time and really made it excellent. I am apart of a few online Facebook book clubs and yours is by FAR the best. You did that sis! You can tell you had a vision and the execution has been great. The newsletters have been great. The syllabi have been amazing. The discussions have been so much fun and enlightening. I can tell you’ve put a lot of thought in this down to the order we will read the books. I’m a proud supporter and can’t wait to see how far this is going to go! Thank you for not just rushing to throw something together and actually making this a quality experience!

I read this last year and SAME feelings. It's not a furnished read for this era but it does present a look into the kind of struggles Black cis-het women had with identifying with feminism in that period. I was a little too hard on it in my Goodreads review but I still appreciate the fact that it was gateway for many others to find themselves in the pools of black feminism.

14:32 reminds me of an old inteview of Shahrazared Ali when she says if a black woman is running her mouth the black man should slap her on her lips gently so it can decrease domestic abuse in our community. Its like some black women seem to come off like they dont like black women but craddle black men some how. I know its and old interview. But when listening to you about how the lady is gentle with black men in a way. Shahrazard old interview pop in my head.

Luv Burden I agree. I’m not sure if it’s due to genuine hatred or if it’s due to self-preservation. You can say things about black women that you can’t get away with saying to black men without way more hostility..so sometimes black women take this as an incentive to be more careful in their approach to black men (i.e. coddling). Sadly, they don’t feel any incentive to care about fellow black women’s responses to their messages. Our approval is considered expendable and irrelevant because our social status is lower.

I read this book in 2011 when I was a sophomore in college. My history department ( S/O NCCU ) offered courses about black women and our history in America, to which i was introduced to many of the OGs in black womens history. Prior to these courses and ultimately reading this book, I was unsure what a feminist was but I knew it was " bad" because of how black folks acted when the word was mentioned. But as you said this book opened me up to a new world completely foreign to me, and created an entry point for me to dissect and examine some of my internalized misogyny while also giving me an excuse/justification to keep listening to rap music lol. As for it aging well or not, I'd be lying if I said auntie didn't sound like a whole pick-me with an internal conflict with her feminist ideations. But for that time it was what it was. Absolutely still worth the read.

This sounds like a funner version of a book report, that people have done, back in the day, when they were kids/children, for like grade school, intermediate or teens (in high school) for English class; an educated (college / university level) well-read/book smart vlog for the common (Brown/Melanin Magic) folk, which I think, is a Good, not Great Thing/Thang... I Love It, Jouelzy... I wonder if Oprah (Winfrey) does a podcast about Books, I dunno). The pioneer talk show host, magazine lady, (Windy City / Chicago) media mogul might be too busy to have one. Yes, Oprah does have her book club too. (Joan Morgan's book has a great title, based on a Malcolm X speech: "When the Chickens come home to Roost..." I never knew what that saying really meant, until now.)

I bought this recently as per your recommendations and am almost finished - I just really wanted to hear you review it because I have some thoughts. I feel like the tone in which she talks about women who choose to marry rich men is a little judgmental and I disagree with her idea on tricking tbh. Referring to Lil Kim and Foxy Brown as “hoochie mamas” was.. eurgh to me and was really unnecessary, as much as she gets right I don’t think that she understands the importance of choice in feminism. There are moments when I thoroughly agree with what she is saying and then others when I disagree. I am still very glad I read it because at least 97% of this book is in line with my branch of feminism. I would very much like to hear if any of her thoughts have progressed passed some of this thinking and if she’d ever re-release a version where she addresses some of these comments.
