They're fine. Coddled children never grow up. It's also important to emphasize that they were very young and this took place around 50-60 years ago, and we're only getting the kids' side of the story. I have a vivid memory of digging into my eye sockets under my eyeballs while sitting by a nightlight in the dark, scooping out tons of beads when I was 5 or 6. I can remember exactly how they felt and how wet my fingers were, and the growing puddle of tears on the carpet decades later. My eyes work fine, so needless to say that didn't actually happen. So I would put much weight on a childhood story like theirs if I were you. Memories warp and change, and there's nothing wrong with their parents' reaction. We can't know if they were actually believed or not. Both parents could have believed them and made the very reasonable decision to not feed the fear further by acknowledging it to the kids and that they couldn't control it. You don't tell a kid something like that if there's at least a speck of something sloshing around in your coconut.

@@MrPortajohn I wouldn't delve into coddling either tbh, but use the moment as a good stepping stone to teach critical thinking skills rather than let the kid's imagination go into full on panic. Then yes you've taken their fears seriously but you also taught them how to navigate through them with reasoning skills to not let them take over, not just assert whatever the kids are going through means nothing to the parent. It's a fine line, but a critical one; parents need to teach not ignore but they also can't coddle yet need to comfort from time to time.

Or at least once you calm down ALWAYS carefully consider exact what you said AND HOW you said it while angry…and be a big enough person to put your child before your ego & apologize &/or explain your negative reactions. *ALWAYS* take the time to stop & put yourself in your child’s shoes & ask all the ways they might interpret what you said.
