There was always politically correctness, Gbush and otehrs were just mad that PC speech got out of their control.

@@williamozier918 Yeah, there has always and will always be political correctness and it's always a source of irritation and exhaustion for normal people. Great commentary on such a polarising minefield of a topic. My main thing is that so much of what gets branded political correctness is either an intentionally misleading tabloid style news item or plain has nothing to do with social politics. Before I give an example, let me change that. I scrolled down accidentally and saw "Being PC is mentally challenged" as a high rated comment (dislikes do nothing, replies = upvotes, mind) and now I have to change 'my main thing' to the ultra-simplified hyper-polarised caricaturistic perceptions and projections of the vague notion of political correctness that many many people have. _That_ crap is what's driven me mad in the past. It's a miracle that a thoughtful intellectual person could summarise the issue in 9 minutes, then oblivious donuts like that guy think they can nail it in under 9 words. First point though: As you said, news media exploits PC rage to play readers/viewers like fiddles. British tabloids have now discovered the term 'snowflake' for some reason so we now have daily stories of things like (actual example) 'Pancake tossing race may be cancelled due to PC health and safety snowfllakes'. - there's every chance it's not even in danger of being cancelled but the point is what the hell do health and safty requirements have to do with political correctness or 'special snowflakes'? It's a case for me of 'If genuinely outrageous rulings were taking place I'd be with you but I can't find them through the neck high hysteria, false rumours and shamelessly distorted events'. I asked a forum to share specific example of political correctness for this very reason and what I got was the equivalent of hand scribbled 'This is your mum' pictures presented as photographic evidence that it was in fact my mother. One was literally a picture with things like 'folically challenged' instead of balding - problem is that doesn't actually exist and didn't when I read about "This is how America is now" in the mid 90s. I wanted actual real life objective examples, which must exist, but I just got rantings about "the leftists" and "SJWs" - like the panic of a fire alarm is proof that there definitely undoubtedly is a fire. I'm *not* saying there's no way buildings are ever on fire here, just ask 2017, I'm saying I can't buy on the salacious stories if they're not convincingly sold.

South Parks definition of political correctness as “verbal gentrification” is brilliant. If you fix up a neighbourhood whose lives are you improving? The people who live there or the rich people who might replace them? The same applies to language. Are you trying to help other people or make yourself feel more “correct”. Intent is a big factor.

when property values go up, the poor can no longer afford to go there. They must move to areas where the crime rate is just as bad, but now they lose their old community and become more isolated and alienated by their surroundings. there are only great benefits to gentrification if you focus on the land, and ignore the people.
@tinnic6 жыл бұрын
Re: gentrification - it benefits the existing owners. There was a suburb of my city that got gentrified. It was a poor suburb but the homeownership rate was high. I.e. most owned the houses they lived in and while the houses were crappy it was theirs! So you had lifelong low wage workers like cleaners, cooks and just other low skill workers sitting on million-dollar pieces of land. Most of them didn't sell until they had to move into retirement homes or with their kids because they were too old. That's when the kids usually sold the land with the crappy house that got knocked down and either fancier houses or apartment complexes built in their place. These days that suburb is one of the most expansive and hippster places to be.

I understand the concern behind "PC gone mad!!1" (even though I think it's a bit of a bogeyman). But the thing that really annoys me is the way its opponents have bastardised "free speech" into the one and only right in existence, fuck other people's right to free association or to defend their brand or to not be defamed. And "free speech" not only prevents the government from shutting you down but compels others to give you their platform, take your message seriously (even if it's baseless conspiracy shit) and *refrain from criticising you* . As a left-wing person, it's almost impossible to criticise a right-wing person without being accused of trying to "censor" them, no matter how logical or evidence-based it is.
@reclusiarchgrimaldus1269 Жыл бұрын
I believe that due to the amount of influence that social media companies have on politics, they should have the 1st amendment applied to them. If people get the information that influences their vote from one social media platform, but said platform has promoted the supporters of one candidate but silenced all of the candidates' dissenters who were calling them out and providing legitimate, irrefutable evidence of their previous corruption and crimes, there is a great chance for that candidate to win the election despite their numerous proven crimes. To me, it is too dangerous to give social media platforms the power to silence any political arguments not explicitly advocating for violence due to the power that said groups have.

That's a fair summary :) At its core, "Political Correctness" is a well-intentioned attempt to encourage people to be a bit more sensitive and not be dicks to other people quite so much, particularly disadvantaged groups. I'm a child of 1980s, which was probably the last generation before Political Correctness went mainstream. When I was a schoolkid it was common to call other kids a "spaz" or a "Joey" if they fell over or f**ked up. That's reprehensibly insensitive language by modern standards, but - even back then - people would've thought twice about knowingly using such insults within earshot of a person with an actual disability. We only really use the term "Political Correctness" to refer to the aspects that we personally think take the concept too far - and we reserve "Political Correctness gone mad" to refer to the aspects that we think are particularly over-the-top. The aspects that we don't have any problem with are simply accepted without comment as reasonable. IMHO, the "gone mad" variety is usually the result of overzealous people over-thinking things, identifying and eliminating potential points of offence on behalf of some minority or other - who, if they had actually bothered to poll that group's opinions, probably weren't bothered at all. Was any "person of colour" ever truly offended by a blackboard and demanded that it be called a chalkboard instead? It seems unlikely.

In a nutshell, PC and the term, PC are weaponized by both extremes of the political spectrum to get what they want. PC should be a way of encouraging society to be better to each other, as living among people who are different is reality. That said, I'd imagine most people live in a way that is generally respectful to others, whether they'd vote Tory or Labour. Fringe groups will usually take the rarest, most extreme examples and promote them as the norm to delegitimize, and silence opponents. Fact is, you can tell someone who never goes to a coffee shop that you can't ask for black coffee anymore, and they may believe you.
@Gray9636 жыл бұрын
I agree. Being PC originally meant and 'is' simply how you have a polite conversation, good debate, as well as being generally civil... by not carelessly insulting and being pointlessly antagonistic. That's all it meant to nearly all the people who first advocated it and most people on the left and middle today. You could also call it simply having good manners and good etiquette. That's all it ever was with few exception, as Georg said. The extreme examples are so rare yet blown out of proportion as to essentially be myth. The equivalent of Buzzfeed over-hyping with title based clickbait. I'm old enough to see how it started with not calling blacks n*****s and such, it was the stubbornly aggressive assholes on the 'far' right like confederates and the politicians that pandered to them that demonized the concept into what it is today, by cherry picking and obsessing over the most extreme examples and hypotheticals, even fabricating many stories. Manners and respect are an easy target to rebel against for youth, that's why you see so many bratty kids and trolls bashing it. Yet it gets them to think the left is out to get them. Insulting the concept of manners and non-antagonistic conversation is very childish and ill informed, as it always was.

@@Gray963 I don't think most people who dislike PC culture do so because of a dislike for good manners. I dislike people policing language and behaviour because the folks most militant about it are also offenders of their own rules. If you belong to the wrong group, it's completely fine to be discriminated against according to them. Can't be racist to white people, can't be sexist to men, etc. And then they redefine existing words to try to pass off their nonsense as credible. They're basically hypocrites. It's not even that rare these days. It's pretty common among younger folks, even among the supposedly smarter folks. It's like the stereotypical crazy Christian threatening someone with hellfire and eternal damnation if they don't convert. Except now it's some "liberal but not really" person doing something very similar. Conservatives are easy to hate and dismiss. Liberals are traditionally seen to be some sort of hero/underdog/champion of the oppressed. Except they're no longer the underdogs. Both sides may do it, but people on the left who do it are more problematic because they're tougher to dismiss.

So incredibly refreshing being able to see a video about this topic that is 100% neutral and morally objective. That´s why I like your channel so much George. One thing that I truly wonder about though is this: where are all these whiny SJW:s that everyone keeps talking about? I remember seeing such comments every now and then a few years back, but that was quite a while ago. Even though I have a very strict "no politics" policy when it comes to my KZbin subscriptions I do watch a wide variety of content on youtube and often I do look at the comments section, mostly because of boredom, honestly I really can´t remember the last time I saw a comment from someone that was "triggered" or offended by something. People complaining about the PC and SJW thing though I see _absolutely_ _everywhere_ . Last week I remember being extra bored and ending up watching random clips about the classic Wallace and Gromit movies and saw that 2 of the top comments were about "all these whining SJW:s" in the comments section. I literally scrolled through the comments section for about 15 minutes (I was that bored) and I couldn´t find a single comment that in any way complained about the content of the video. Later the very same day i found a comment string wich started out as a very simple joke (a very inoffensive one at that) and halfway through the 77 replies it had escalated to a cancerous flame war about SJW:s and participation trophies because someone felt the need to bring it up literally out of nowhere (the word participation trophy wasn´t mentioned a single time in the prior comments or in the video itself, which for that matter was completely unrelated to the subject as well). I know it´s comments section and that I really shouldn´t expect anything from it, but the thing is that I´ve been actively trying to avoid this subject for a time now for the simple fact that I don´t care about it and find it extremely cancerous. But no matter where I go it keeps showing up and honestly it drives me fucking crazy because it´s the same complaints and the same "criticisms" over and over and over again. Not gonna lie, I initially found the whole PC thing to be pretty annoying as well (I attend Uni as well but because I´m an introvert twat I don´t really put myself in social situations there very often) but i would rather just accept it than having to listen to one more person complaining to it.

I, a kid, could only associate this title with the main institutions trying to regulate my speech, church and family. It took me years and watching representants of these same institutions proclaim their disdain for political correctness to understand my mistake in understanding, but this turn of things made one thing obvious, the people who most voraciously critique politcal correctness are the ones who most want to impose their strict codes.

I used to be pretty right wing as a teenager and had some idiotic opinions and then I went travelling as a youngster and it totally opened up my views towards accepting people for what they are. I am glad that we do have political correctness and that governments progress towards equality for everyone and not just people like me. As long as nobody is doing anyone any harm, peoples sexuality, colour, nationality and religion is completely irrelevant to me and I would rather speak to and make friends with people than not get to know them and make enemies out of them in my mind through my own ignorance. Also I go and watch a lot of away matches with the Welsh national football team and because of my way of thinking now, it makes my trips away so much better and so much more informative. You are actually willing to learn about the opposition supporters countries and they love the fact that you are interested so we drink and sing together, share football stories and learn bits of each others languages (mainly swearing). This would never happen if I had idiotic pre conceived ideas about them through my own ignorance.

I do think political correctness has gone to far. Look at how it has affected those old school british comedians. The fact that we now have refer to Bernard Manning as Bernard Person-who-identifies-as-male-ing is quite frankly ludicrous, and dont even get me started on Roy 'Plus-Size' Brown
@Phoenix23126 жыл бұрын
You just proved Georg right though - That has NOT happened...People will take the piss by using that - Including Royston Vasey himself (Roy 'Chubby' Brown) but it is NOT enacted in law at all... So by spreading misinformation, you help the cause of political correctness... Tough your point still stands - Old School Comedians MAKE A LIVING by being offensive... So why would anyone KNOWING that these people are going to be deliberately offensive SPEND MONEY to go to one of their shows KNOWING THEY WILL BE OFFENDED only to ten SELL THE STORY to a Newspaper an vilify the comedian for doing the job they have done for over 30 years or more? This is becoming a major issue especially in teh United States where there is video online of a woman who went to a well known 'Blue Comedians' show knowing that he would make jokes about Asians and she got offended, had a right verbal battle with him before he threw her out of the building - AND HE WAS IN THE WRONG??? He had only been doing teh circuits for some 40 years at this point... His comedy was very well known... WHY WOULD YOU SUBJECT YOURSELF TO AN ACT YOU KNOW WILL UPSET YOU? Not criticising, but trying to educate you - You have a very fair point but used a bad analogy to voice that viewpoint.

Political Correctness regardless of which side you're on is inherently dangerous to free expression and debate. All people should be allowed to say what they want to say, regardless of content. The best ideas will rise to the top, the hate-fueled narratives will sink to the bottom, if you censor hateful people then then more moderate people will see them as victims and eventually take their side or espouse some of their views. All ideas and words should be able to be expressed freely without being met with physical abuse.
@simaopereira36976 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree with you. Political correctnes (at least most of the time) doesn´t involve censorship. It does however involve criticism. X criticizes Z for being politicaly incorrect. Politicaly incorrectness is at the end of the day just the refexion of the consensus and an unavoidable consequence of free speech and modern day comunication, even if it is a pain in the ass sometimes.
@joesiemoneit41456 жыл бұрын
the best ideas will rise to the top? lol thats bullshit, and you know it. it has never been this way. because its not the best idea thats on the top but the one thats advertized the best. or else by now, we wouldnt have to bother with stuff like people eating tide pods or televangelists...

I think a lot of the tension around political correctness comes from our inability to agree on behavioral boundaries more than any actual hatred or the desire to hurt another's feelings. It's just push back from being told what to do without a readily apparent reason to do so.

I mean look at the watergate scandal during the early 70's which brought down the Nixon Presidency. Now that was conservative government involved in that, and that has been the standard way the leftists have used that to bash any conservative government rightly or wrongly. But fast forward nearly 40 years and look what the left are doing by to politics in Canada under Justin Trudeau. The removal of Patrick Brown from the opposition party over two anonymous allegations of sexual misconduct, #metoo being used as a political weapon. Is this any different from what happened at watergate by the party that is supposed to care about human rights and hate speech laws to imprison people for wrong thinking.
@jardelelias56256 жыл бұрын
Well, seeing the United States' politics from the outside, you learn there are assholes in both sides, and in the end, anytime one party accuse the other, the assholes are the target. Republicans and Democrats have good and bad points, but most people only see the good in themselves, and only the bad in the other. Just don't be the asshole in whatever party you may choose, and you'll be fine.

This was a very even handed and well rounded video thanks Georg For me, as a transgender person, political correctness "feels" helpful but that is obviously not an objective observation and is couched in all sorts of biases and personal experiecnes. It's a complicated issue but probably much easier to disniss if you are a straight white male. Like, on one level it doesn't even matter to me anymore. I'm very lucky to just 'blend in' but not all trans people have that luxury. so from that perspective political correctness can serve to protect people. BUT, Well i'm very lucky now but in the early days of my transition that wasn't the case and I can recount many many experiences where people were begrudgingly accepting to your face only for you to find out from some other source they actually are really intollerant of trans people. Its kind of like one of those "maybe it's better to have racists out in the open so we know who is who" kind of things. I suppose what i'm saying is that it's possible that Political Correctness doesn't eliminate prejudice it just hides it in a pretty superficial way. But again this is very much a subjective view.
@dinoboyoutuification6 жыл бұрын
"It's a complicated issue but probably much easier to disniss if you are a straight white male. " How the hell do you expect anyone to be sympathetic to you if you outright say that some people's opinions are invalid or less valid because of the color of their skin, and their sexual orientation? The prejudice you talk about being out in the open, is the one you peddle. But go on, tell me about Hetero-cis-normative patriarchy and "lived experiences."
