When Do You Harvest Garlic?

This week, I harvested my garlic crop! This was all planted last fall and was in the ground for about 9 months. And I'll confess: the only hard part of growing garlic is knowing when to harvest it. (More info below.)

If you can, it's always best to harvest during a dry time so the garlic has a chance to start drying in the ground. Mother Nature doesn’t always participate in our garden plans so mine was harvested between rains.
So... how do you know when to harvest?
One of the tell-tale things to look for is that the majority of the green leaves are turning brown. At least 1/3 of each leaf should be brown. If yours are, then it's time to think about harvesting!
Here's the process:
- Test one bulb by digging it up, looking for the husk to have formed. Use a garden fork to dig up the bulbs as pulling them can tear or rip the stalk, which can inhibit the curing process.
- Once dug up, lay on screens to dry and cure in a warm place out of direct sun. I use a barn to do this, but any dark space will work. The bulbs can also be tied together in bunches or braids and hung to dry.
- Allow to cure until the roots and stalks are completely dried. Don’t worry: I’ll have a follow-up video when we get to this step!

Kleb, I just have to tell you that Kip and that sweet little kitten stole the show! I grow garlic and love having my own fresh garlic to use in the kitchen. My garlic harvest wasn't the best this year, probably because I planted it in bagged garden soil in 12" raised beds, and It dried out really fast. My garlic was ready to harvest in the 3rd week of June this year, but the heads were quite small, which was extremely disappointing. I've started amending that raised bed with dried grass clippings, coco coir, worm castings, and other organic matter to improve the soil before planting a fall crop. It's bound to make an immediate improvement. Happy gardening, everyone! ~MargieI

We harvested our garlic yesterday after pulling a test head to check. All good. Harvested a lot to eat fresh, process and freeze for future use, and plant cloves in the fall for next year’s crop. I found the BEST tool to clean the bulbs after picking - a Le Creuset nylon brush (red in color; round flat puck-looking with a knob). It removes dirt from the bulb and root end without harming the protective skin. LOVE IT. Game changer!

Don’t use grocery store garlic. They get treated with stuff to inhibit it growing in the fridge. Get good garlic that is locally grown to use for bulbs. September late or October before it gets freezing. Cover it with some mulch. Watch it grow next spring. Put it in the dirt not a planter.
