Great call from ATC to politely deny the turn back into the fog without any working approach instruments. Pilot seemed no longer thinking straight even considering that.
@aviation_nutАй бұрын
Agreed. He had a case of get-there-itis. He had visual contact with an airport, and that's what matters. Fog doesn't last forever.
@rudikleinАй бұрын
The pilot started to sound desperate. The ATC did a great job helping him to land safely.
@user-oy9zz4wz1lАй бұрын
God, how I LOVE to hear professional ATC help a pilot onto the ground safely. I have dealt with ATC that has vectored me into a mountain AND ATC that was professional during my initial solo. It makes a WORLD of difference when dealing with a pro like this.

I can't imagine why he wanted to go try to find Providence in the fog again when he had a wide open airport in front of him.
@rudikleinАй бұрын
He was probably familiar with Providence. You tend to cling on to what you know.

Maybe more familiar with providence

The tower was closed so there was probably no runway lighting, or maintenance for his shitbox of an aircraft but glad it all worked out ok

Man that ATC was so cool and calm, with just enough assertiveness when needed to stop the pilot doing something stupid at the end.

Don't know the NOTAM's for that day, but there's PVD VOR-DME. Set 115.6MHz in your NAV1 or 2 and navigate using the VOR. Several options: 1) Fly R-001 towards SFZ 2) Fly R-186 towards OQU 3) Fly R-165 (V405) towards UUU. All with one single VOR. Use ATC to help you with Wx for all 3 options.
@billkinzler3773Ай бұрын
ATC offered sound advice to land instead of trying to head north to Providence in fog at night. Good call.

When I teach students, I like to use the analogy of playing poker. You want to build the best hand you can, and the cards you have to play are training, experience, proficiency, currency, aircraft equipment, proper maintenance, good weather, etc. Sometimes you can misplay the best cards, but better cards will give you the best chance of winning the game. It sounds like this pilot had a combination of bad cards: weak skills, poor aircraft equipment/maintenance, night/MVFR. He was forced to rely on luck, and he got it in the form of this controller.
@lasagnapotato3853Ай бұрын
Man I can't thank you enough. I've only been in the atc game around 5 years and I'm absolutely fed up with irresponsible/ ignorant pilots that expect the world to spoon feed them... take responsibility of your own life, nobody else can come up and fly your plane, and on the one day you need it most you might not have the seasoned vet approach control jim bob here to save you.

KOQU, is it a military airport?

in an aircraft with multiple system failures. in IMC. The first airport you can make is the best airport. It is a pain (ie expensive) to be stuck away from your home field needing repairs, but not as bad as bending metal or worse.

You are not sitting in front of your Computer in tour living room . You "might be " still flying an airplane. You are in a plane talking to a controler .
@Darkvirgo88xxАй бұрын
He followed the controller's advice and managed to land safely. Stop judging from the sidelines; every pilot makes mistakes, regardless of their experience. Many seasoned pilots have crashed in less demanding situations. Until you've faced a similar scenario, your opinion holds little weight. Even IMC-rated and current pilots can find themselves in trouble; panic and spatial disorientation affect everyone. Numerous factors, such as health and fatigue, play a role, so it's time to stop criticizing the pilot who is still alive while more experienced ones have perished. It's time to mature; high school is behind us.

Worst day to fly.
@Flight_FollowerАй бұрын
Yeah
@rallydenАй бұрын
This ended well because the pilot has skills and can fly the airplane despite losing his navigation equipment. So many crashes occur when pilots were unable to cope with autopilot failure and cannot fly due to lack of basic skills.

What is this guy doing up in IMC weather. He obviously was not prepared for it nor seems qualified.

And in addition, he got panicked after losing GPS and others
@N1120AАй бұрын
Have a failure like that in IMC, at night, and see how you feel. He handled it just fine. Kept the airplane stable, flew headings and maintained altitude. That's great work. 😊
@mapolinskiАй бұрын
What I wanna know is how does an aircraft get in that condition in the first place? How many times have you been driving your car and everything except the engine fails? It just doesn’t happen with reasonable maintenance.

He may have done just fine in an airplane with functioning instruments, good weather and no reason to feel stressed or afraid.
