When F-14 Tomcat Became F-14 Bombcat In 1991

On February 28th, 1991, after the conflict was over, budget reductions resulted in the deactivation of the long-range A-6 Intruder bomber and 11 frontline F-14 Tomcat divisions, primarily as a result of the aircraft's expensive maintenance expenses. Up until the introduction of the new F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, a capability vacuum resulted from the retirement of the A-6 Intruder. Because of its extended range and hefty payload, the F-14 replaced the A-6 as the deep strike platform for aircraft carriers. It could carry a greater number of bombs than the F/A-18. The initial Bombcat was limited to using unguided free-fall bombs until the decision was made to allow the F-14 to drop bombs as well. Bombs including the Mark-82, Snake eye, BSU-86, and etc were approved for use. The F-14 delivered air-to-ground munitions for the first time ever during Operation Deliberate Force in September 1995, when the VF-41 "Black Aces" flew off the coast of Bosnia. Later, on Serbia in 1999, and in the following years, the Bombcats carried out missions throughout Afghanistan and Iraq.

Right here. USS JFK, CV-67, 1989-1992. Intel spec-2. Had to make a choice of mess cranking, fire dept, or work on the flight deck for 6 months service duty. Chose the flight deck as a blue shirt (V-2 division) chaining and chalking f-14, EA-A6B, A-6, S-3 Viking, A-7, Cod planes, and AWACS planes. Afterburner on the F-14 was so white-bright, you had to squint your eyes........IN THE DAYTIME!!! Getting ready to make a short movie about some of the declassified, vectored missions i used to see in the Navy.

@@mikepeg99 Crazy to think how a prop plane can still even take off with from a carrier in that short of a distance lol. Is the AWACS considered a STOL? Then again if the US could get a loaded B-25 to take off on a much shorter ww2 carrier, with no catapult, in the Dolittle Raid during the Pacific theater, surely that thing could take off with the catapult.😂
@mikepeg99
@mikepeg99 Жыл бұрын
@@carsonchambers5617 Yep. COD and AWACS planes had humongous wingspans. They were the deadliest aircraft on the flightdeck also. For 2 very distinct reasons: 1. When the jet blast walls are up the props stuck out, left and right, past the safety barrier. As they revved up the engines, it was like being in a category 5 hurricane. Enough to blow you clean off the flightdeck if you're not paying attention. 2. You had to be careful of the props while it was taxiing around because those 4 blades were at least 6 ft long per blade. Nickname for the blades was "Hamburger Helper"
@mikepeg99
@mikepeg99 Жыл бұрын
@@carsonchambers5617 Also, those steam catapults had enough velocity to fling a Sherman tank into the air. Everytime an aircraft took off the carrier would surge forward from all the momentum and built up energy, and that godawful bang was intense.

On my FAC tour in Bosnia, the “Bombcats” did an incredible job of “shacking” their designated targets. However, a FAC’s job isn’t just to guide munitions on target but to ensure the safety of the platform delivering the weapons. When the F-14 was in the “ pop” and those wings would start to program out as the aircraft hit its apex at 250 kts, I was always concerned because now the aircraft presented a 60’ x 60’ target maneuvering at 250 KIAS. It was always worrisome. However, nothing beats a “Tom Kitty” giving a panel check to the OP!

Yep, we retired the F-14 & the A-6, replacing them both with a plane that could both jobs half as well. The F/A-18 still can't match the payload or range of either. We also mothballed the S-3 Viking sub hunter & replaced it with nothing at all.
