Final Fantasy X-2 was the first video game sequel to a Final Fantasy game, but Square actually planned for there to be two games, as opposed to one. The first was meant to be focussed on Yuna, with the second focussed on Rikku.

You can tell the development team really loved Rikku. Even though the game really focuses on the back lore of Paine, Rikku's actions during her time without Yuna are mentioned all throughout it. I think the most telling is that she clearly had a love interest with Gippal, and it's very clear in ffx2 that he ended up really falling into wanting to pursue her again despite being the reason they broke up. They added a lot of hints to Rikku's effect in the world of Spira. Her design change was also the most drastic, and they used her as a secondary cover girl for the series advertisements. And then again with her return in the last mission once again bringing more world lore. It would've been nice to see them give her more spotlight since she is so loved... but I get that story wise, she would have overshadowed Yuna because she's far more dynamic. They do this to Vanille in ff13 as well...😢

Dissidia is ending in February of 2024 (end of month, beginning March 2024, Final Fantasy Dissidia Opera Omnia will be shut down completely. There was even a message from the developer about it. Really wishing Rikku was in though. They foreshadowed her as a tease but never put her in.

Spira is a really interesting world and there’s a lot that could be done that focuses on other characters. I’d also be happy with something that focused on Rin and Shinra and that rumour about FFX/X-2 connecting to FFVII but that would probably be highly controversial. 😂

​@@ThundagaT2 FFX-0 Original Sin Features heavily: Yunalesca Lord Zaon Yu Yevon Shuyin Lenne Focusing on the final days of the Machina war between Bevelle and Zanarkand. Give it the Halo 2 treatment where it switches between two protagonists on opposite sides each learning a worldview shattering truth. They'll need to develop the Bevelle faction more heavily to do that. The origins of Sin, Dream Zanarkand, and Yevon etc. Same for Vegnagun. Then give it an FF7 Crisis Core & Halo Reach type vibe of noble tragedy, doomed inevitability and massive foreshadowing etc. Done right they could make it able to be played independently and be a hook point into the FFX series. THEN do the Auron, Jecht, Braska prequel.

Not gonna lie…. I would’ve had both versions on preorder the moment they opened up orders for them. The cast of FFX are iconic and have a special place in my heart along with the music and storytelling. Definitely plan to introduce my future kids and nieces/nephews to Final Fantasy through X all the way.

Your first one is a groundbreaking experience and often your entry point to JRPGs, everything that follows just cannot have that "magic" again, especially other final fantasy titles. That is why final fantasy fans tend to be super critical of late FFs. Most people started either with 7 or 10.

It would have been fun seeing how Rikku felt about the events of X and how she was dealing with the lost of Tidus as well. See what regrets she had, hidden thoughts she never let out. Honestly i would have liked having the 2 perspectives

All it really needed was giving Rikku a big objective similar to what Yuna was up to. but Yuna's was... pretty phenomenal. She pretty much breaks the universe to restore Tidus to life. What would Rikku have to compare to that??? I did notice hints of this in the story though. Certain parts of the story of the game we did get have Rikku as the main driving force of a mission. Also the entire mission structure itself in FFX-2 seems designed to make the game modular so they can swap out parts more easily.

The Japanese version had extra dresspheres. We didn't get them in the USA. It is featured in the original strategy guide. Beside the outfits it said it was for Japan only.

If you get the ps vita FFX and X2 remastered, you get all of the dresspheres. I have the USA version but I think it's from the international version back in the day that had all of spheres.

It was not the original Japanese version, it was the International + Last Mission version, an updated version in the same vein as Kingdom Hearts Final Mix.

I loved X-2 since the very beginning when I ran the game for the first time, right after beating X and watching the cutscene in between where you see Yuna about to embark on her next journey. And when I heard that song on the opening credits I felt like I was watching the opening of the second season of a tv series. A purely magical moment 😊

@@jughcorey What do you mean gameplay wise? The battle system or the overall gameplay in general? The story is shit, which is what FF is all about.. The cheesy little girl vibe is shit, and weird considering it’s a main line title.. Went from probably the best opening sequence in a FF game in X from the start until you get to Besaid, to some weird shit finding out Brother wants to be a girl, Yuna is a Japanese style teen pop star and the games version of Sephiroth/Seymour/Kuja is Leblanc and her “goons”.. In terms of gameplay yeah, the battle system flows which is more engaging and fun.. The dress sphere system was quite cool, one thing X probably could have done differently was it’s levelling and equipment systems even though they’re unique and work, most people obviously prefer a more role based system, but that’s all I can think of.. The mission system is horrible, the chapter system is horrible, the % of completion thing is horrible especially considering a ton of it is tied to pointless trekking to every single area in every chapter to have some pointless conversation or do a pointless and boring thing.. And then you get rewards/endings BASED on wether you wasted all that time.. I was 14 when it released, I got the guide book too, can’t imagine how many people never saw the better endings until years after release either through following guides on the internet or just watching it on KZbin or something.. I know the end game of X is a grind, a SERIOUS grind, but it’s all completely optional and not tied to the main game, you generally don’t start the end game until you’ve reached the final save point, the game is done, you’ve seen everything there is to see and you miss out on nothing wether you decide to do the end game or not.. If good gameplay to you is having to sit there for 10 minutes listening to Maechen multiple times throughout the game or watching countless comm spheres countless times or having to read a guide to say the right things to people for the calm lands mission then fine, but I find all that shit more boring.. I try to play through the game once in a blue moon but I just can’t, I get bored, while I can and do play through X once every few years, end game and all.. No disrespect but whenever I see someone saying X-2 is a good game I just automatically assume they’re either female or real life Brothers..

If I had to guess, the possibility of getting Tidus back was *such* a powerful motivator to get the plot moving in Yuna's story, and it would have been very difficult for them to create something anywhere near as compelling for Rikku's (at least to the point that a significant chunk of players would actually opt for her version).

I agree, especially for 6. The pastel-remaster looks worse than the original, imo. Also, if they were to remake 8 I'd love if they disabled enemies leveling up with you. X doesn't need a remake. It's been remastered for nearly every existing console already. I have it on ps3, ps4 (honestly don't know why at this point) and Switch. I HAD them on ps2 as their individual games before I sold it lol. It doesn't need to be remade, they'll only be able to add pointless padding and remove elements people love. Or they'll do the FF7 sequel approach of claiming to be a remake while it's actually not. At all. I was suckered in by the first one. It would have been an awesome NEW installment from the series if they reskinned the protagonists.

I imagine the gameplay would have been quite similar, with the main difference being cutscenes being different, because Rikku may have gone off to do her own thing and had different experiences. Hopefully they would also give her different gameplay sections as well. Part of me thinks that's an exciting idea, and another part of me is glad they abandoned it, whatever it was like. Maybe if it was a full fledged side-story with nothing in common with Yuna's game, that would have been better.

She is the better character. Nobody wants to address the fact that Yuna never really makes decisions or life changes for herself BY herself. She's very weak willed in general and although she has a lot of growth it's very ironically main character syndrome and she comes off very coddled cause of everything she has at her disposal. Without Tidus or Rikku she would have never grew as much. Yunas personality in X2 seems like a mixture of natural growth, adopting what she remembered of Tidus personality and Rikkus influence.

I love Yuna, and I enjoyed X-2 mostly, but Rikku would have been a banging main protagonist, especially as an older character. It's not too late Square!

Whenever I see Rikku I am reminded of my deep crush on her back when I was 16. I remember flipping through a gaming magazine just outside the lunch cafeteria at my high school. It was a full page art of the one of her on the disk cover. I was smitten. Love at first sight. I just had to have the game. Desperately so. Honestly even now I can remember the game as being quite enjoyable. It was fanservice from start to finish, but it was fun and even had wholesome moments.

I suppose in the Rikku version, it would be canon that Rin was the villain whereas in the Yuna version, it would be Rikku's fault just because that's actually how the 100 percent completion goes because they thought it was too unfair to require Rin villainy to unlock the 'better ending'. In that case, perhaps in the Rikku version it would have been much easier to unlock the Rin villainy outcome.

10-2 does have game play that was a unique experience. The story was a big gamble and not really my cup of tea but class changes mid battle with bonuses for doing it and shit was unique and I haven't seen another game go off that model since... kinda a shame because the battle system was weirdly amusing.

Also like the idea there would have been a 3rd game much later that had a Payne story perspective. Honestly I do get scrapping this idea because unfortunately I can see how this might make development more difficult and costly and if 10-2 didnt sell well then the money spent wouldnt be made back

I enjoyed ffX-2 it’s arguably one of my favorites in the series. I always wished it wasn’t so sort…it left you wanting more. I would’ve like this too if it’d happened. I keep thinking that ffX-3 will come out one day. FfX universe is my top five favorite game ever. Right there with ff6, ff8, ff4, and 6…

I feel like this approach of two separate protagonists would work well if it was like kingdom hearts birth by sleep where the the three main characters had their own playable campaigns with the story almost being the same but with different viewpoints and endings

FF8 and FFX are my favorite games from the franchise. I never played FFX-2 but absolutely would have if they had followed through with this plan. I'm amazed the fan community hasn't modded a Rikku version. It would've been even more interesting if they had an additional variation for Paine. I'll get around to playing it eventually but it's near the bottom of my list.

Considering how many Final Fantasy games have come out and continue to release, this seems like a small mercy. They could have simply rolled some of that extra content into the existing game or as alternate scenes available in a movie viewer or something. The games are long enough as it is, but I'm sure some people would have enjoyed it more than I.

I'm still kind of upset they never gave us the PREQUEL-sequel spinoff game we all REALLY wanted: Jecht, Braska, and Auron's pilgrimage!! That would have been AMAZING!!

I mean, maybe. We saw most of their journey, and it was pretty straightforward. They went from bevelle to besaid, then back to bevelle to Zanarkand. Nothing notable until they arrived in Zanarkand and all died.
