I wonder if something happened to that ref. Countries take their football games really serious.

Nothing happened to him. The whole crew was not allowed to ref any further World Cup games. He went back to Uruguay and retired from officiating the following year. As a side note, it was because of this incident that they started using goal line technology to see if a goal was scored.
