"Speak softly and carry a big stick." The story ignores human nature. After the first contact and understanding through the recovered information, Earth would be building warship after warship with improved stealth and bigger weapons. Passive defense emboldens predators.

Ah, no. Earth would not give up the tech that is keeping it out of the 'empire's' claws. I also doubt a diplomatic envoy after a couple of failed empire attacks would be so easily viewed as a real attempt at a rapprochement. Humanity would be busy ensuring that the entire solar system was a giant fortress, not playing footsie with diplomats.

Interesting, but sometimes the way the stories are told, with no one directly speaking, it comes across as if listening to a textbook.
