My favorite line in Some Kind Of Wonderful Keith: "You can't judge a book by its cover." Watts: "Yea, but you can tell how much it's gonna cost!" 😂❤❤❤

Amazing film, Mary Stuart Masterson is easily the best character in this movie. I absolutely love the charm this movie has.

Analysis? This recapped the story for most of the video and then demonstrated she didn’t understand the intentions why John Hughes made this movie.

I really appreciate how in-depth your review and overview is here. You highlight things that NO OTHER video on this film mentions. You’re spot on about SKOW in it’s lifting & parallels with PIP. It seems many say they prefer SKOW; I think because it appeals more to their personality in that it has a more minimalist, moodier, less comedic and more serious tone, yet still enough lighthearted moments & that 80’s zeitgeist wardrobe boldness & token JH dialogue plus scene building soundtrack. One other point is although JH did focus on more family centred fare afterwards; one final script of his that focus on teens or perhaps 20/21 yr olds was Career Opportunities which like SKOW, perhaps even more so doesn’t get acknowledged as much as his earlier hits. Worth a watch and would be good to see how you find that one and why.

Back in the day a group of us would go to the picture theatre every Thursday night. We'd play the game of who was first to recognise the actor from another film. I wish I had KZbin back then, I'd win every time with your help. 😁

Huge movie buff here, and I don’t know if it’s just me, but Pretty In Pink is kind of boring. I found Some Kind Of Wonderful more watchable and I like it more

While Hardy was a copy cat of James Spader's Sheff, I thought Hardy got the better comeuppance. Duncan crashing the party and telling everybody that this party is about to become a historical fact and Amanda slapping Sheff twice just felt more satisfying to me. And as Morgan said, Duncan stole the movie whenever he showed up.

When John Carpenter remade Escape from New York into Escape from LA, he did it on purpose. How did Hughes not realize he was remaking Pretty in Pink?
@reikun863 жыл бұрын
He either was in denial, or he just lied about it.
@JohnSmith-qn3ob3 жыл бұрын
I heard that he remade in on purpose because he didn't like the "fairy tale" ending of Pretty in Pink. Some Kind of Wonderful had Andie and Duckie getting together in the end.

I do think Amanda wanted Keith, she just saw how Keith and Watts were obviously in love with each other and gave in.

A group of co-workers used to get together on "cheap night" at the movies (low-cost tickets Monday or Tuesday, I forget which) to take a chance on random movies. This was one of them, and I really liked it. Our group had also seen "Sixteen Candles" which the woman of the group liked, but I thought unrealistic. What made this movie special was that I had a crush on a woman based mostly on looks, but found myself falling for her co-worker based on personality. It was a revelation, probably caused by movies showing people falling in love based on looks alone. Or as KZbinr "Pitch Meeting" describes such things: Writer: "And then they fall in love." Producer: "Why is that?" Writer: "Because they're attractive." Producer: "Okay then."

Wow, it’s random that you make this review the day I finally watched SKOW!! I appreciate all of the connections you’ve made to all of the other 80’s actors. Great job!! However (maybe because I’m a guy) I relate more to Keith’s character in SKOW a bit more than I do Andy’s character in PIP. I like PiP, but I love SKOW! Eric’s chemistry with both Mary and Lea felt more believable to me than Molly’s chemistry with either of her male supporting actors. Also…I get that Ducky is supposed to be a geek, but Good Lord did he have to be THAT dorky?? Also, Mary Stuart Masterson is awesome in this! Regardless, still love your review :)

Not my favorite of the John Hughes High School universe, but Mary Stuart Masterson is wonderful, and Lea Thompson made a character that could have been one-note actually have some depth. And Eric Stoltz was just beautiful. I do really wonder what Martha Coolidge could have done with the story, especially the dynamic between Amanda/Shane which had echoes of the Julie/Stacey friendship in Valley Girl. Fun fact- Martha Coolidge had hired Kyle McLachlan as Hardy and Kim Delaney as Amanda, but Deutch fired them when he took over the project. Lea Thompson, who had already rejected playing Amanda, was offered the part again right after Howard the Duck bombed. Sure worked out for her that she did this part. LOL.

You captured my exact sentiments about this film. Even at age 13, I recognized that it was a poor facsimile of Pretty in Pink. I do love the soundtrack though! Shame about Craig Sheffer. I always thought he'd have a bigger career.

I’ve been enjoying watching everything he’s in with Gabrielle Anwar. They have a daughter together in real life. Sometimes they play exes, and sometimes they play budding romantics. I can’t get enough of their onscreen interactions! 😁

The "____ has a massive crush on person they have no business being with, all the while their opposite gender best friend who totally gets them and absolutely adores them, and they would be PERFECT with, they somehow blindly manage not to notice in a romantic way...at all." trope in full effect. Decent movie. But these kinds of stories always frustrate the hell out of me. The constant wanting of someone who isn't interested in you, while someone who quietly DOES love you, you only see as a friend thing. It just gets me. It's the kind of thing that can make a person yell at the TV once in awhile lol. It doesn't help that as lover and stories, and a writer/storyteller myself, I really can't stand love triangles in any shape or form. Not Deutch's best, but I do think, personally, that it's a better or at least to me more enjoyable film than Pretty in Pink. I like that the dude FINALLY wakes the hell up at the end of the story and realizes his girl best pal has been right there the whole time, and unique to this story even tried her best to help him GET this other girl he had no business with (even though it hurt her a lot to do so). It's like...duh dude, you have NOTHING in common with the chick you're hung up on, and literally EVERYTHING in common with your best friend. Get a clue.

Seen them both in the theater. SKOW was far superior in my opinion. Girlfriend always thought Duckie was a stalker. Deutch stated on multiple occasions that Keith was always Stolz so the McCarthy reference was inaccurate also Ringwald was offered Amanda Jones not Watts. Agreed on some holes in the script though. Deutch said Hughes had written SKOW complete before PIP shot.

I like this film more than most, I guess, because I'm familiar with the areas where it was filmed: Wilmington, San Pedro, and parts of Los Angeles, Calif., and I even know nearly all of the exact locations that were used, including the railroad track scene! I also saw this years before seeing Pretty In Pink, so I guess I appreciated this one more - and I never really thought of it as a remake, actually, but I guess it was. It reminds me of '50's rock and roll: many musicians (especially Elvis, and Chuck Berry) had song writers that would write an entirely new song, yet use the same tune as the last one! Chuck Berry even commented on that once.

It is funny how this one more than other Hughes films spoke to me at the time, and so it holds a special place for me, what is funny is at the time it didnt dawn on me at all the sheer copy of Pretty in Pink it was, now it is painfully obvious.

And to think. This movie only got made the way it was because John Hughes wanted Molly Ringwald's character to choose Duckie at the end of Pretty in Pink and the audience didn't.

Why in all these 80's movies do people think it's a good idea to go to a party during their date? It never seems to go well. It's always awkward. And it's never romantic. I guess dramatically speaking, going to dinner and a movie is just isn't very interesting.
@MR-rj2qw2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure about the main plot: In my experience, guys are not THAT dump. If they have been just friends with a girl for years they do not suddenly realize they are in love with her and want to date her. If he is not into you, then he is just not into you. But then again, I was never as good looking as someone like Watts, maybe it happens to hot people.
