Eh not really. Ever since Gohan has been training again he’s been working on getting a new form that isn’t like SSG or Blue to separate himself from Goku and Vegeta. Now the way it was obtained in the movie was just a copy and paste of the Cell Games, but it was gonna happen regardless.

Gohan became vegeta because the fans at the time didn't want gohan to be a main character they wanted goku back so toriyama created goten but then they refused goten and then eventually we got this buu saga.

The creators underhandedly put him to par with Goku and Vegeta. Beast mode is now the new hybrid ultra instinct, even though it’s corny at least they’re trying to keep them in the race.
