Before my mother was even a thought in my Irish immigrant grandparents' minds, her father used to sing this love song to her mother. Sadly, he died two months before my mother was born (Mastoid) but her mother spoke often of their undying love for each other. His name was Carroll. My grandmother named my mother Carolyn in his honor. She loved this song.

I heard her singing this song in Salt Lake City around 1990, or so, she was with De Danaan and it was first time I'd ever heard the song. Later I bought their LP and have enjoyed it! But, in the meantime, I've found that this is a really old song and probably should be sung by a male voice. But, where I come form, a song is a song and Miss O'Connel's voice is wonderful!

Thanks for the posting, but I've just one further (respectful) suggested correction. In O Casey's play, The Plough and the Stars, the title is changed to "When I first said I loved only you Nora" as the song is sung by Jack Clitheroe to his wife Nora.

I wonder if it would have been better for Maura's career if she had stayed in Ireland and not moved to Nashville. She was not really a country singer. When I heard that she had moved, I thought oh no, stay in Ireland girl. Nashville is no good for you.
@paulbrennan81553 жыл бұрын
GR8 band, Gr8 singer. 'I' would have liked the earlier verses a little lighter. Less mournful. At least a tad up tempo. The last verse could then have the 'change'. I think this O'Casey version is marginally better than "When You & I Were Young, Maggie". For Nora Clitheroe.
