I'm glad that Duffy released that song, as without it I'd have never had the lovely experience of "just deciding on a whim to go visit Warwick Avenue for no good reason other than it being in a song" and being delighted by both the station and the canalside walk back to Paddington.

I used to work in the studio where Duffy wrote a lot of that album in Queens Park, years later I did a recording session with her & asked her about it, as I was living there at the time. She was writing the album in QP & had been given tickets to see The Strokes so was heading in to central London on the Bakerloo and the lyric just popped into her head - she'd never been to Warwick Avenue when she wrote it.

What I like about the Duffy video for the song is that she's not trying that hard to lip synch so it seems that she's singing along to an old love song and it's having its effect. The teardrop was a nice bit of unconscious improv.

The green railing around the stairs is perfect amongst the nearby greenery. There is a sort of pleasant Edwardian vibe from the ‘underground’ Bakerloo stations (most of the Watford-DC line’s stations look shabbier than the 1972 stock), serving the suburban regions that existed before the rapid expansion outward.

The Bakerloo Line once were extended to Watford Junction but then it was pushed back to terminate at Harrow and Wealdstone. And yes Warwick Avenue is quite a quaint little station.

Yes, the Baker Street to Stanmore section of the Jubilee Line also used to be a branch of the Bakerloo...on a couple of occasions I went to Lord's Cricket Ground (of which St.John's Wood is the nearest), but a short walk down the road to Warwick Avenue is a viable alternative. Watford Junction trains initially got curtailed back to Stonebridge Park, until they were reinstated to Harrow & Wealdstone.

It's a great song and I lived in London then so for me it's forever linked with memories of just a great time to have been working there. It was the last summer before the financial crisis and that song (plus some Amy Winehouse) was a soundtrack to that time with friends, still all young free and single all being paid too much. Alas, the stories that later came out about Duffy's life also sum up a lot of the way that London went in the dozen years since.

Warwick Avenue is lovely, especially in the summer with the trees in full leaf - and of course the canal is nearby. But the poor thing has not had a coat of paint since when I moved into Maida Vale (1976) and the whole Bakerloo line has not changed one iota since then either. It's lovely olde-worlde (shake, rattle and roll) but also decrepit. The vent tower is unsightly and the rubbish bins all round it a disgrace. With all the visitors now passing through, often in large groups, it deserves some attention. Well worth a visit on a sunny day though, for a gentle walk along the canal to Paddington Station.A little piece of magic.
