Rick Dior (outstanding player and teacher) was giving advice a few days ago on his KZbin channel about a Marvin Smitty snare with calf heads; a fan of his channel bought one. Rick recommended tuning the top head to A, and the bottom head to F#......so Steve, claiming that drums can’t be tuned to specific notes is to claim they don’t make sound. They vibrate air, and that pitch can be measured. It’s said that Bonham tuned his drums to the song’s key, in the studio (he must have used old school methods in the Pre-TuneBot days; what he chose live on stage I don’t know). The TuneBot is a great teaching aid also. It doesn’t replace ear development, it evaluates that development. (I couldn’t have learned to measure blood pressure by feeling someone’s pulse, without a blood pressure cuff....woodworkers can’t develop their eye for length, angle and curve without rulers and goniometers and...) “In imaginative hands, modern measurement tools help old school techniques survive.” (Tage Frid) All the best Patrick

I would say a bop kit is all in tuning, a 20 or 18 kick with a 12 and 14 toms can be great rock set ups if you tune them medium to low

Steves' Bop tuning of that green'ish bass drum is... wow, that's how a Jazz bass drum should sound. Fell in love at the first strike of that beater against the head.

That RED sparkle kit sounds like a 22", 13, and 16" he's playing! GREAT sounding and has "beef" and depth the others don't...the others sound very thin and "cheap". Is it the maple shells that are making the difference on that one?

My main kit is an AQ2 Safari/Bop combo...just picked up a Stage custom Bebop for a car kit...after 3 years playing various kits in a pop bands... I've come to the conclusion that a good quality 16 or 18 can do just about anything you need.

Great video. I keep my bopper tuned fairly low. But it still works for jazz along with rock or modern country, (Which is Rock).

I need to get new batter heads for the rack tom and floor tom for my Sonor 'Bop' kit..not the SQ2 model but the regular 'Bop' kit. After listening to this I'll probably get Evans '56 Calftone batter heads I have them on several other drums I really like them..nice warm full tone. They kinda struck the mid-ground between the coated heads on Steve's kit (which I assume were equivalent of Remo Ambassadors) and Noah's kit with the clear Pinstripes (a bit too dry and 'dead' for me). Nice playing guys.

wow! very inspiring to watch...love the trade-off's...the kits are exactly as you described them-incredibly versatile from high be-bop to mid-range big band to deep studio rock...these kits seem to possess it all and the playing was also very demonstrative of these said styles...i was never a big fan of 18" bass drums {looks wise or sound wise} the smallest i'd go would be 20" but, 24 or 26" is more in my preferential range but you convinced me there's more to be had with an 18" if the proper head selection and tuning is applied...and... they're a hell of a lot easier to carry around from gig to gig...thanks man...

When your not playing modern jazz with a quick tempo and saying like at the start of every phrase “Like , that cat is square man , he is not hip “ “ dig it” “Like , drummer , your bass drum is exceedingly large for this groove , it is not hip ! “ “ you must get hip and reduce your real estate thusly “ “I concur” Vouty o’ roonio “Alas oh purveyor of drums please make me a 20” bass drum and a 14”x14” floor tom and i will be hip again and drop bombs “
