I started watching your videos to learn more about luxury bags and YT keeps popping up videos by you that resonate!! I have a couple of Chanel bags but feel no desire to add more- and I’m glad to see someone else feels the same way as I do. Also like how you evaluate need vs want/can afford. I love that you’re thoughtful about your purchases and not snobby either and appreciate a good Lulu lemon bun bag too! Also loved the Hermes advice video. I remember my first luxury purchase (different brand) where the SA intimidated me and made me buy something I really didn’t love. I still have it and keep meaning to sell. I wish I’d had your video all those years ago. Please explore more brands in 2023 that are quality but not over priced. And some of the luxe bags that are not so coveted but are worth a look.

Great video. So informative. I’m so guilty here and I hate thinking of the amount of waste I create. I think 30% of my shopping (the time and money spent) brings me genuine joy. 70% brings me stress and regret at how much I’be wasted. I plan on still shopping but definitely more mindfully!

😮😮😮WOW! Much food for thought. I was thinking about all that you were pin pointing and then your video was over😞All that you speak of regarding shopping and spending could be applied to other areas of a person's life, putting more in one area than another and creating an imbalance. I am truly not only eating, but digesting your words. Sorry I did not know of your channel when you started, but I am here now. Wow, you and I are on the same wavelength right now. I looked at how much I spent in 2020 and 2021 and it was significantly more. My increase in spending was on luxury goods! I look and all the things that I have and appreciate that I have them, but know that I don't need anything more. It is exactly like you said in your last post that you can admire beautiful things without having to buy them. My birthday is next month and I usually always know what handbag I want from my husband months before he asks me. This year I told him, I have everything I want in terms of handbags/SLGs and don't want to spend anymore (for a long time) on those types of items. Even though I don't have that "dream bag" I truly am at purse peace and really don't "need" anything. This year is the year that I focus on being better about finances. We live in California, have 2 littles, a house, cars, etc. Thank you for the eye candy, but for also be the voice of reason. KZbin is a slippery slope and it is hard not to want EVERYTHING that you see others have.

This video is the reason you’re one of my fav luxury KZbinrs! You don’t withhold yourself from shopping but you also recognize when too much is really too much! To be honest I noticed that you have been posting more haul videos recently and it made me wonder if KZbin has changed you or made you want to shop more. It was so so refreshing and inspiring to see this video today! Love your idea on the excel doc to pay yourself :) I also love tables and charts and will try to make one for myself! Please keep us updated on your luxury “minimalist” mindset this year :))

I've been following your channel from its early days and one of the reasons your videos are so compelling is that you are willing to be honest with yourself and transparent with your viewers about how you feel about shopping. You had many amazing bag offers in 2021 and I think you can cut yourself some slack there but it is true that there can be an addictive aspect to the hunt for the next "perfect" bag. And there's no question that brands like Hermes are experts in pushing all of our psychological buttons to fuel our hunger for more, even when we should be "full". Looking forward to hearing more thoughts on this topic and especially if you find effective strategies to resist the temptation for more!

I really enjoyed this video, the "podcast" nature was refreshing - I actually closed my eyes and listened along. For years I felt so focused on working / earning so I could get to a place where I could breathe (financially). Then when that moment came where I was able to come up for air and not worry about finances so much, I then focused on "catching up" on things I thought I was missing out on - i.e. designer bags, etc. Now that I've "caught up", I feel FULL and actually a little overwhelmed (even by my modest collection). It makes me feel like I've overcompensated and now I need to balance out.. so your video came at the right time, where I'm at! Anyway, greatly appreciate this video :)

Wow, it sounds like we’ve been on a similar journey. Balance is key. It’s not about deprivation. Ty for sharing this information! I really do love to shop and buy new things but sometimes I look at what I have and I think, ‘why did I get this I don’t even love it, use it or enjoy it.’ I realize the impulsivity gets to me and the dopamine hits when I get that confirmation email lol. However I do want to be more intentional with my purchases and buy items that will serve me for a long time and that I just love. I have some Louis bags that I don’t use often, however I have them on display and I smile to myself because they look so good and bring me joy. Money well spent in my book. But that depends on each person and how you choose to spend your money is up to you. I really appreciate your videos. So informative and you demeanor is so sincere I feel like I’m taking to a kind friend who really wants to help!

I know what you mean about smiling when you see your bags. I had a couple bags like that as well - that I loved to stare at, but never used. One was the Chanel rainbow iridescent WOC. I took photos of it and then let it go. Now when I look at the photos, I smile just as much as when I owned the bag. And it makes me feel nice knowing that someone else is enjoying it. Sometimes that’s enough. 😉

I discovered your channel in my recommendations yesterday and absolutely love your content. I don't subscribe to channels where I can't see the KZbinr's face but the way you speak has a certain elegance and confidence that I absolutely adore. You have so much wisdom I want to keep listening to. As someone who feel that she has a very late start in my life (back in school at 29 to start a career in PR), the price increases nowadays is a bit disheartening. I love luxury bags and fashion, but I feel I am unable to really indulge considering the rising costs (and the uncertainty with where my professional career is going to be able to afford such luxuries AND a life I want). It's definitely nice to hear other luxury bag enthusiast's journeys and how you only started collecting Chanel in 2019. I definitely feel a bit of the pressure through social media, seeing girls younger than me with a vast collection already! Hopefully one day I'll be able to get to a place of financial freedom such as yourself one day. :) Looking forward to you discussing more about your journey and thoughts! Thank you for your thoughtful video - I had a similar experience: my shopping spend went up by more than 100% in 2021. Basically I got into Hermes and got four handbags in one year, plus all the accessories and shoes and jewelry to go with it. I love my items, and I use them all the time, and they make me happy, so I consider that money well-spent, but I'm really contented now and don't feel like I need to continue shopping at Hermes (or Chanel or Fendi or VCA or Cartier) indefinitely. 2021 was wild and so much fun, but I'm "full" and contented, and I'm reining it in this year, and will just be enjoying my splurges from last year (with the occasional shopping now and then, still! Because life is too short.) I also have a social media account and instead of unboxing videos, I've been creating more styling videos, which are still fun.

Powerful video, thank you. ✨ I identify with a lot of these thoughts in my own way. I spent a lot last year, and sold a lot of bags to help finance purchases, but now I look at my collection and feel it's really "done." That forces me to ask myself, am I shopping just for the sake of shopping or acquisition, and can I overcome that? My goals in 2022 include no fast fashion, no jewelry purchases, no makeup purchases. One new bag, one preloved bag. No SLGs. I've been thinking of filming a wish list video but it would be five minutes long. I might do a goals video instead.

After getting the bag, I realized that's not my life style anymore. Ended up selling it at a loss, expensive lesson learned. I use to collect designer bags, but sold off most. Now I only keep 10 bags, started a minimalist approach, and just use and enjoy what I have. =)

The thing is, your husband’s question is faulty because we technically don’t “need” any of these luxury items, right? 😂 The question is really, “how many handbags do we WANT” before it gets to be too much? I spent most of last year not purchasing clothes because I was happy with what I had. I now know what items I do want and what would serve me best and those items are few and far between. Taking a break and enjoying what you have can be so helpful. In terms of handbags and luxury goods, nothing is truly pulling me to buy a particular item (well maybe the Celine 16 bag). I had been setting money aside for a proper bag (chanel or dior) but with the insane prices, I think once I hit the dollar amount I need to spend later this year, there's a good chance I'm going to be so turned off by the whole thing that I'll just have a nice chunk of money to add to my Roth IRA instead.

This is what I struggle with, we have our mortgage paid off so I noticed since I'm more included to buy things because I can, But there is much more I can be doing with my money. So this year I'm focusing on investing and building up a savings account for experience rather then material things.

Thank you for the sobering news. Am I gonna stop shopping this year? Probably not but I am going to be brutally honest of what luxury item is going to truly bring me joy. Also, for the first time in my career, I have stock shares. I would love videos on tips of saving and understanding my options. I am 47 with children, my 13 year old will go to college soon. I would love your insight and tips on how to save for my future and theirs. I would also love an eye candy video, too, so please don’t stop that! 🤣 Thank you for giving us the facts and looking out for us! It’s news that I don’t want to hear but need to!

Just wondering what they count as “shopping”? Does that include shopping for essentials like groceries, medicine, insurance plans, etc.?

This reminds me of my own experience. One lux item in 2017, one in 2019 then all of a sudden too many transactions in 2021. Completely lost my mind. Taking a step back and wondering why it all happened. Maybe I was making more money or maybe too much social media influence/FOMO. No one to blame but myself. I just know I need to save my $ and spend on something more lasting like a down payment on a home and a nice car. Maybe some land and experiences. Very nice introspection, took the words right out of my mouth.

This happened to me too. In 2015 I bought one bag, then nothing until the end of 2020 where I bought a pair of Chanel shoes, then 2021 I bought 7 new bags! I think it's because of the pandemic and I can't leave my country or even my state I live in. For 2022 I plan to not buy any new luxury items, and just really enjoy the new items I bought ☺️

I found myself doing a whole lot of shopping last year- but they only way track my spending is through the company website. for example- when I look at my purchase history and how much I spent at LV I was overwhelmed. Please do a video on tracking the expenses. I love your spreadsheets :-) thank you for this video!!!!

I think that COVID had a lot to do with my spending. It was a way to fight boredom, but also during this pandemic, my husband had an organ transplant. It was stress upon stress and shopping was/is a way for me to comfort myself. It’s messed up, but it just is. I know it’s a psychological issue for me, so my goal is to get back to hobbies I love. Many things I love to do involve being around people and I’ve had to be exceptionally careful regarding COVID due to my husband’s condition. So, my personal goals are to get back to doing the simpler things I enjoy and take a break from shopping!

just like you, when i travel it makes me reflect on my luxury purchases. i feel guilty especially going to countries that people don't have the luxury of living life like we do here in the US. time is of essence really... i've been working hard to get these luxury purchases and this year I came to the realization that I need to enjoy what I have and maybe get rid of some bags I own that I don't use that much...
@hellocatwalkcity2 жыл бұрын
Yes, something about travel that clears our minds. As for feeling guilty, I always say, gratitude over guilt. We can appreciate all that we have and not feel guilty so long as we feel balanced and mindful. 😉

There's only 6 bags on my wishlist but honestly don't even know if that would be enough either because what if I get them and want them in multiple colors?? The money and time spent sometimes gets me.. the fact that you said over 8 years shopping.. I can't imagine how much money that really is.

I totally agree with everything you've said here in this video and I'm shocked by the statistic that the avg woman spends 8.5 years of her life shopping. I sometimes feel like I am spending money for the sake of spending money. For example I didn't buy anything over the holidays because I was too busy/lazy to browse the barrage of sales and deals. But then after the holidays, when I start seeing all the goodies that everyone has gotten, it made me want to get something too even tho I have absolutely nothing in mind to buy! It's that feeling of fomo that encourages me to buy things, which I acknowledge is so irrational. I'm trying to be better as well and spend money intentionally. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I enjoyed this video :)

Great insight. KatL also started tracking the money she almost spent on luxury but into a bank account where she can’t access the funds as a financial goal for herself this year. I feel like it will be a good exercise to really assess your spending in order to make the right financial decisions for your life.

I enjoyed listening to this on my airpods, cleaning and storing my bags..This video really resonates with me as I was too in 2020 spent shamelessly 100% more than what I typically spent years before due to covid and travel ban.Fortunately, I was quick enough to realise this and in 2021, I spent lesser and keep reminding myself to feel blessed and grateful with what I have.. It was a huge step for me as for years I was a shopaholic..Now as I grow older and like you said- pay myself for future. ive beginning to value money a little more.. I hope I can continue feel this motivated for years 🥰🥰🥰

Hello fellow spreadsheeter! Thanks for your video, it made me assess and analyse my spending trends. Interestingly, overall it has gone down since 2018, as I haven't been travelling or dining out as much. However, I think what I used to spend on travel has gone to beauty and cosmetic items. I've bought so many eyeshadow palettes, but haven't even had the chance to use them! I think it's due to watching various channels, blogs and reviews. I love watching the various channels and living vicariously through all the luxury buying, but on a whim I walked into Loewe and bought a puzzle bag. I don't regret buying it, but I can see how the shopping experience, the thrill of buying, the packaging, unboxing can be so addictive. This year I might start to curate my social media intake and have been recently adding more finance new channels (although quite boring) just to round things out. I think my change in spending is to fill the void of not being able to travel and the urge of wanting things is over whelming. Agree with you regarding having wish lists, it just makes you pine for things even more. However, I do like to take screen shots or add them to pinterest to admire from afar. Fortunately, I don't aspire for any of the flagship bags, I just need to keep reminding myself they just don't suit my lifestyle.
@hellocatwalkcity2 жыл бұрын
Curating our social media intake is so important too! I have some favorite KZbinrs who talk about financial independence, retiring early, investing, etc perhaps I’ll share them in an upcoming video if there’s interest. I’ve done the same as you - taking screenshots to admire from afar! It’s still fun in its own way! Thanks for sharing your experience.

I'm only 12 minutes into your video, however I have so much to say. There is always more than one way to look at any situation, and instead of you looking at the 8.5 years shopping as a negative, I would ask you to look at it as a positive. The average life expectancy of the American woman is 75 years, and out of those years you are only spending 11% for self care? We as woman, why are we constantly made to feel bad about spending our time and money on ourselves; it need to stop! When I shop, I shop alone, that is my me time; and my luxury purchase bring me joy. So rather than looking at how much time you've spent shopping I would ask that you take a more in-depth look at how many years you have already sacrificed and will continue too as a worker, wife, mother, daughter, sister, etc and then maybe you will view it differently. And secondly, you stated that your spending only began to noticeably increase after you started your channel, which is expected! I understand you started the channel as a "hobby", however it's not a hobby, as making KZbin videos is work! And I commend you, as I thoroughly enjoy your channel's content. But I would expect for your spending to drastically increase to supply your business with the merchandise it needs to run your business, so when successful influencers start talking about "no buy or low buy years", it makes me start to wonder if the need a better accountant or if they are just pandering for views or comments 🙄. You are going to do what you want, but don't let some dumb article make you feel bad about the choices you've made that bring you happiness. XO
@hellocatwalkcity2 жыл бұрын
It’s not the article or the stats that made me feel this way. That was just additional research that caught my attention. I’ve been reflecting on this for months and finally felt clear and ready to share. If you’ve watched some of my previous videos, there were always hints along the way. Also, I definitely don’t think shopping is a negative thing at all. I enjoy it and like you said, it can be quite fun and stress-relieving at times! I’m simply at a point where I have plenty and I’m ready to recognize and appreciate that, which leads me to feel like I can fill my life with so many other enjoyable activities that don’t require buying more of the same. Hope that makes sense.

This video totally resonates with where I’m at in my current life. I set an intention this year to be more mindful of my spending. I ask myself questions; do I have something similar, do I love it? I’m learning to appreciate the things I have already. I do blame the pandemic, my depression increased significantly and retail therapy was my only self care. But now instead of mindless spending, I focused my energy into working out, which has helped both my physical and mental health. And of course my wallet. I’d love to hear your advice and tips on investing.

I am in a very similar situation as you! I purchased *way more* luxury items specifically as I ever have in 2019, 2020 and 2021. I need (ehem, must) cut back considerably. I’m so glad I already have my 401k and Roth maxed out every year. My savings definitely took a hit in 2020 and 2021 and I need to get it back up hopefully! I too want to still shop, just no where near the shopping I did the past 3 years.
