‘When it Rains in Broken Hill’ is the first single from The Orbweavers’ album ‘New Moon / Silver Moon’. It was written during an arts residency in Far West NSW on Wilyakali and Barkindji Country in late 2022, responding to desert flowers of the region that arrive with spring rains, Broken Hill’s corrugated iron buildings, extensive laneways, and personal stories of distance and yearning.
Lyrics:
When it rains in Broken Hill
How you feel it on the tin
How you hear it on the tin
Through the night
I know that you’ve left town
But your songs are still around
And I’m willing this sweet rain to bring them back
When rains fall in the spring
Desert flowers sing
Purple Bush Tomato
Desert Pea
While desert roses grow
as crystals here below
Blooms above
And blooms deep in the sand
On the rainiest of days
I walk slowly through the lanes
Dogs a howling chorus to my tears
Gutters cut so deep
Red stone and mortars weep
Creeks are running down the hills to town
Verandahs draped in grapevine shade the morning
Red sand holds the night and glitters with the rising sun
On a stationary train
I sit here with the rain
Carriage 209 in seat 13
Silver City
skies and trails
Flying comet, desert rails
Untold journeys made across these lines
Wilyakali Country through all time.
