Can you name any other alternatives to using lemons and limes for adding sourness?

I've used kumquat flesh as a stand in for lemon, the main drawback is you don't get a lot of juice from them.

Wild sorrel and curdled milk is traditional here for sour stuff. Gooseberry works too, especially if picked a lil too early.

As someone living in Costa Rica: it's funny how people here don't believe me that their "limon" is not REALLY a "lemon". Some even insist that the yellow lemons are some special breed for marketing purposes. Funnily enough. local oranges are almost always completely green on the outside, too. But I always wonder how come that, in a country where basically anything grows like weed (volcano earth), the good old yellow lemon just wont really work. Normal apples have a hard time because they want 4 seasons (we only have rainy and dry seasons here). But lemons?
@rodvarmo
@rodvarmo Жыл бұрын
They are growing the yellow lemon in San Carlos now, I do prefer the limón mandarina (rangpur) it has a lot more juice and more flavor
@siggyincr7447

I'm here in CR too. I have a couple lemon trees (Limon Americano) and they grow just fine here but the fruit doesn't handle rain while the fruit ripens well. So if the dry season kicks in early enough I get some nice lemons. Otherwise they rot before getting ripe. Limes on the other hand handle the rain just fine.
@MoritzvonSchweinitz
@MoritzvonSchweinitz Жыл бұрын
@@siggyincr7447 Pura vida! That's interesting! I was always wondering why the yellow ones are so rare here. But why would water damage the fruit? Shouldn't the waxy/oily skin protect it?

as soon as I saw that creole lemon, my soul was saying "DON'T DO IT" my family would make lemon candy and the dried fruit would be used in lemon pie from the wedges, even after weeks of the wedges drying in the sugar vanilla almond mixture and then dried further it was a real punch, as kids we loved them🤣 but man if you like lemon cake, pie or lemon anything this is the one to have! Very powerful, intense and complex. Also good in pork and goat

Sidra lemon might be a citron (citrus medica). It definitely looks like it, and citrus medica used to be called citrus cedra. In french it is commonly known as cédrat (pronounced saydra) and grown in Corsica island.

I lived (and worked) 3 years in Suriname (South America). They have all kinds of citrus there. The fruit called "Cider Lemon" in your video is for sale at markets and at stalls along the major roads (like the East-West connection) under the name "Swaranja" (Sour Orange). It tastes as the name says. Used to make a lemonade, like Fanta, but more acid, with lots of sugar. Very refreshing, if you like sour (as I do)! Suriname, a country worth visiting!

There are loads of native limes here in Australia, but they are only called limes because they taste to varying degrees like a lime. The most famous is the finger lime but there are MANY others. Most not commercial but you can buy plants to grow yourself. I guess this is a similar situation. They are on average better than standard a lemon or lime.

I would suggest that if you ever come to Australia, reach out to Daleys Fruit tree nursery. They sell a huge variety of interesting and Australian plants. I am a regular customer, they can point you towards any weird fruit you desire. This sounds like a plug or ad but I legit buy trees and plants from them often.

6:47 I was about to say it sounds like cutting open a deflated basketball (don't ask), I'm not used to seeing so much cavity in a citrus. It would be interesting to get this one analyzed to find out exactly where it hangs on the citrus family tree. I'm really glad you and Marco met, it's cool to see such dedication!😄

I eat lemons straight up and I LOVE sour! I can eat warheads and they dont bother me at all. The one time, I bought raw Passion Fruit pulp, and is was a lot more sour then a lemon, but I thought it was so good and kept eating/drinking it, and sadly, I didnt realize how much acid I was taking in and it burned a hole in my stomach... True story!.. Well I got a bad ulcer from it.. So yeah, I gotta watch my acidic intake cuz sourness doesnt bother me at all!

I'm rather indifferent about sour. I really do enjoy the taste, but hate the sensitivity on my teeth afterwards from too much acid and the occasional upset stomach. Funnily enough I also have a powerful sweet tooth and will gladly eat sickly sweet fruits. The folks who constantly whine about sweet acid balance with fruit varieties seem so pretentious, I don't care if its sour or sweet as long as it has a nice flavor and doesn't hurt my teeth too much. Oh, and bitterness is insufferable...
