Smicers goal and he scored a pen. Very under rated player imo. Not many people would have taken that shot on from that position but he knew we had to roll the dice. The most important goal of the match as well because that was the moment Milan realised they’d fucked it. There was no doubt we were coming back when it went 3-2

5:05 Gabriel Clarke pointed out a serious problem for Liverpool, this was because at that moment they weren't allowed into the Champions League the following season as holders because they finished outside of the top 4 places in 5th beaten to the last UCL spot by of all teams Everton. This was due to the FA saying that whoever finished in the Top 4 places in the Premier League that season would be the 4 teams qualifying for the Champions League the following season regardless of whether Liverpool won it or not. The top 4 that season were Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd and Everton. This was very controversial at the time not only because of the storied Merseyside rivalry between the 2 clubs but also the UCL/European Cup was the basis of a long standing grudge between the 2 which at the time of Istanbul stretched back 20 years. In 1985 Everton won the league title under Howard Kendall which meant they would've qualified for the European Cup but English teams were banned from European competitions for 5 years after the events of the Heysel disaster. Everton fans at the time blamed Liverpool for their slide out of the top echelons of English Football because in a 3 year period during the ban they won the league twice and finished runners up once so they missed on 3 years of European Cup football. Howard Kendall said in a radio interview that Evertonians were thinking oh no not again history repeating 20 years on. Liverpool had to wait 3 weeks after Istanbul to find out whether they would be allowed to defend the UCL but UEFA relented in the end and allowed them into the UCL for 2005/06 but they had to go through all 3 qualifying rounds to get to the group stage.

If you mean the game then yes, 2005 was way better, 100%. This Liverpool team was nowhere near the 99 or 08 teams, and not even as good as Chelsea’s 2012 squad.

As a Manc I am supposed to hate this result. But when Gerrard got that header, a surge of English pride came from deep within me. I started roaring Liverpool on. Feeling the same, a few mates joined in and suddenly nobody could hear the commentary as we shouted obscenities at the Italians and screamed encouragement to the Reds. Carragher was immense. A night that made me proud to be English. The greatest final of them all. Incredible.

ac milan and liverpool gave us one of the greatest rivalries in UCL. in italy we didnt really know much about liverpool until 2005 final
