No one is better than chess engines. Even the weak ones are above 3500+ these days. And stockfish is like 4000+. But for computers, ELO gets calculated differently. If they were rated like humans, stockfish would be above 5000. And magnus barely touched 3000. The difference is night and day. To stockfish, magnus would be someone who just learnt chess. So no, he is not better than engines. That simply is not possible. If god played chess with stockfish, stockfi would probably manage to force a draw one or twice. That's how powerful it actually is.

TLDR Magnus gets a win rather than a draw despite having only a king and a bishop, despite Alireza being three pawns up in an opposite color bishop end game. This is because checkmate is TECHNICALLY possbile, even though extremely unlikely at GM level. Alireza also calls Magnus's conduct into question because he alleged that him swearing at himself in Norwegian was done deliberately to distract. The word "cheating" is never used at all other than the clickbait title
@auspiciousjelly3919 Жыл бұрын
The checkmate possibility was not just extremely unlikely at GM level. It was almost impossible at any level as even white had to throw everything so hard. In short, both sides had to work together for the checkmate

My take.... MC shouldn't be cussing, AF should have been calmer in the endgame, even under time pressure (as he is nowadays, with a bit more age and experience), getting flagged and losing is the rules so I guess the reality of MC having a lost position and winning rather than drawing is just tough shit. AF will and has learned and MC doesn't seem to have such histrionics over the board these days either.

Sorry super ignorant when it comes to chess. But I thought Alireza lost on time ? Period, end of story. How did the focus suddenly shift to whether it was a draw or win based on 'if it was possible for magnus to win'? So if a player loses on time, they don't actually lose on time if there's no way their opponent could have won, in which case its a draw -or- or if a player loses on time and they do lose if their opponent could have technically won?
@Crikey420 Жыл бұрын
Ikr i lose on time all the time its tough shit for anyone, just be faster
@medea278 ай бұрын
I believe the way these rapid timed games work is that each player has a set amount of "thinking" time on the clock to use (eg. 3 mins each) and if the game hasn't been won by either player before they run out of thinking time (ie. by 6 mins) then they determine the winner by extrapolating the final position of the pieces. If they both still had options for winning moves then it's a draw, which is what Alireza probably expected... but in this case there was _technically_ a move that Magnus could have made to checkmate & win. So Alireza didn't lose by running out of time, he lost because Magnus had a potentially winning move ... albeit a contentious move that Magnus may not have even played since it wasn't GM-level gameplay. If the arbiters hadn't considered the potential winning move then it would have been declared a draw & neither Alireza nor Magnus would have lost.

The argument that this was a draw, because it's allmost impossible to checkmate by Magnus in this position is bullshit. Thats why we need time rule. What if a person have 5 different moves, that all obvious for anyone over 1000 elo that leads to checkmate in one move, but he run out of time? How should we avaluate this? A draw, or maybe a win for a dominant position? In my opinion even if you have only king on the board and other person can't checkmate you and run out of time, it should be your win.
