Many years ago at my last job, time off requests for PTO, or vacation had wording on the form that just said ''REASON.'' I put NUNYA down every time, never had a problem. I always took it to mean if the ''reason'' was not good enough, it would not be approved. Apparently, someone made noise at corporate, and it was discretely removed from the new time off forms.

The only reason an employ would ask for your reasons for using PTO is so they can determine if they can call you in anyway by acting like your reasons aren't important. "Oh, you want to relax and enjoy yourself by not working for a few days? Well, that means you don't have anything to prevent you from coming in, and we really need you for those days."

One time a manager tried to get me to come on when I finally took a sick day. I mean, WTF? And if you need me that bad, pay me because I'm sure not there because I like you all so much.

I got guilted into taking only 4 days off for my sons birth.. The usual blah blah blah...I fell for it... To this date I regret that. No one ever tried to make it up... There was a time when jobs treated you right and you were loyal. Not so much now.

I’m so sorry to hear this. I understand what you mean. I’ve been working since I was a teenager and each progressive job has been worse and worse. If you’re a hard worker they take advantage of you and reward you by giving you more work, no chance for compensation. They would rather have you quit than treat you right or be flexible.

"This isn't a request, but a statement. This conversation is also being recorded, just so you know. I AM taking the week of (blah) off, as part of my contractually obligated compensation package. I have done my due diligence in finding someone reasonably competent to cover all of my responsibilities for that week, and I have informed you of this, who it is, and that I will do my best to wrap up all timely projects before I leave. I have also informed you that, legally, I do NOT have to tell you what I am going to be doing during my PTO, because--again, legally--you do NOT need to know. If you find this upsetting, and wish to try to punish me for it, or continue to harass me over it, that will be considered retaliatory behavior, and it will be reported to my employment rights lawyer and HR...in that order. If you do NOT harass me over this--and I don't see why you should, because I HAVE done my due diligence--then I will see you back here in the office when my week of PTO is over. Hopefully without any further harassments or retailations. Again, this conversation has been recorded via audio, and I will be writing follow-up emails to go back over all of these details. My PTO is part of my compensation package, and I WILL be claiming it, after having done reasonable due diligence to cover my absence. And no, you do NOT get to know whatever I do with my time away from work, because you literally cannot afford to pay me that much."

You don't need to do due diligence in finding somebody to cover for you. That is the manager's job.

I had one boss that denied my PTO request for an entire year. At the end of the year the corporate policy was you used what you had since they didn’t allow any carry over. I was gone for a month. When I returned he complained about=my being given for a long time. I reminded him that he had denied my leave and I had no other options. He approved my week at a time off the following year
