Interestingly the BBC had once planned a live action adaptation of 'When Marnie Was There' and in 1971 it sent a photographer, James Matthews-Joyce, to Burnham Overy Staithe (the town on which Little Overton is based) in Norfolk to scout for possible locations. The windmill was an obvious choice (it's actually about a mile outside Burnham Overy Staithe), as was The Granary, a long house on the Staithe which Joan G. Robertson based The Marsh House on. Although that BBC adaptation never happened, some of the photos Matthews-Joyce took were later used to illustrate a reading of 'When Marnie Was There' for the BBC children's series 'Jackanory.' Curiously Matthews-Joyce disappeared some time later, taking the original negatives with him and unfortunately the BBC later wiped the video tape that had the Jackanory reading of 'When Marnie Was There,' but one photo of Matthews-Joyce's does still exist - on the cover of the 1971 Armada Lion edition of the book. The girl featured in the photo was one of two local girls who were cast as stand-ins for Marnie and Anna. It's a pity that the BBC never made its planned adaptation as it would have been interesting to compare it to Ghibli's.

It is one of my most favourite childhood stories. I was very excited to see that an animation had been made of it, and equally horrified to see it had been inexplicitly set in Japan. I do wish the BBC would pick up this story and make do with it.

in one of the making-of segments the filmmakers including the director really emphasized Anna's design as well as how they redsigned her eyes to show different expressions better than past films or how to show an "ordinary face". I think they put quite a bit of thought into that part and just made it more subtle. Besides, you can see Anna's ordinary face fairly clearly.

Sounds like they changed the story for the anime to make it more dramatic.

DeCipher the story is very similar. Just had to cut a fair bit, and rearrange some events.

@@sirsurgenor It sounds like film Anna is in a much worse place psychologically at the start of the story than book Anna is. Is this a misconception?
@sirsurgenor
@sirsurgenor 3 жыл бұрын
@@OrtegaSeason No that's pretty accurate. Anna lacks a lot of the self-hatred in the book when compared to the movie. Self-worth issues are big in Japan (especially among youth) so they emphasized it more in the film.

@@sirsurgenor That actually makes me appreciate the film more. I think you really needed that level of inner turmoil to make the reemergence of such old memories even semi-plausible.

Nobuko has every right to be angry at anna, she was the one who acted like brat due to depression, anxiety or whatever (reason not an excuse)🥱 In fact nobuke tried to patch things but Anna was just awful 🤨😠
