Agreed. He should sit, watch, breath it all in, see the way it really flows. The speed and nuances are all different during an actual game. He will only benefit. That's what we want. The NFL is rough and tumble, he may end up in whether he wants to or not, be it for a couple plays or games.

JJ has one of the strongest arms in the NFL. I'd guess Stafford whos not listed would probably be a 61. All these other strong arm QBs are all average. So much b.s. hyperbole with a lot of these QB's.. What I don't want is they put him cause of record. If they are losing games and he's not ready starting him could be a disaster. Same time, if he's ready start him week 1. And for JJ as long as he continues to be same player im ok paying him cause RB is good at structuring contracts to our advantage. Also unlike someone like Kirk, paying JJ top dollar entering his prime is a wise use of the cap because he is a top 3 player in his position and still young. Plus, if you hit on Turner and/or JJ McCarthy the two biggest cap hit positions will be under rookie contracts for the first portion of JJ's major cap hits. But the honest truth is Kwesi and KOC either have gotten this all right or we are screwed for 2-3 years and will need to be restarted so paying JJ won't matter one way or another.

(And every Vikings’ fan should be rooting for him to absolutely show out and leave no doubt about the outcome.) The fans saying he needs to sit for a year regardless of who is better or if he is ready is something crazy. There sure is a fear of success in this fanbase. Too many people in the comments would rather embrace a lost season with a journeyman backup than find out if McCarthy is the guy to finally bring a Lombardi to Minnesota. Insanity.

McCarthy might not even be QB2 in 2024. Regardless, 2024 is Sam Darnold's year in a symbiotic rental agreement. Objectively speaking, the Vikings should be eyeing a 2026-2028 window, another reason they should have traded (or should trade) jefferson.

There is zero evidence to support any argument that starting early or late makes any difference in QB success. The only reason to sit is if he isn’t the best option at QB. Last I checked, there isn’t an HOF QB on this roster for McCarthy to learn from. Just a journeyman backup on his 4th team in seven seasons that sees ghosts and turns over the football. As soon as McCarthy knows the offense, he should start. No reason to baby him.

This is just a fallacy. There is no evidence to support that sitting McCarthy for a year will help him. If he is the best option and ready to play, he should start. Not starting the best player because you are afraid of success could hurt his development as much as starting him before he is ready. It is a really strange take that has infected this fanbase and shows how scarred and scared many of us are. The correct answer is McCarthy starts whenever he is ready. Period.

What are you afraid of? How about play him when he is ready? There is zero evidence to support whether playing a guy early is better or worse than having them sit. Every situation is unique. Tons of success and failure stories either way. (And no time machine to sit or start a guy and see if one produces better results for that player.) Some guys succeed and some fail. We won’t know about McCarthy until he plays. A QB should play once they understand the playbook and offensive scheme and give their team the best opportunity to win. Period. If McCarthy was behind a top 15 QB or future HOF, sure. But he isn’t. Right now, the other option is a journeyman backup that sees ghosts and turns the ball over. Too many people conflating other situations with the Vikings’ situation. McCarthy has the physical tools and also appears to have the mental tools to be a great NFL QB. We should find out as soon as he is ready and not wait for some arbitrary time in the future based out of fear.

Penix was the choice, over McCarthy, Atlanta forced the McCarthy pick! KOC is a sling it deep coach, and Penix had a quick release, and was the best deep ball thrower in the draft!

@debsmith7861 Penix had less sacks than any college quarterback last season! He has the quickest release of the so called top 6 quarterbacks! I has 10" hands, which helps spiral that ball deep, and cuts down on fumbles, I think he had 3 all season! Penix could move avoid sacks, no fumbles, didn't throw picks, he was the choice, Atlanta beat them to it. The Vikings got the leftovers (5th quarterback pick off the board), and he has issues!

Penix is an injury prone 26 year old qb. Faced extremely mediocre defense from the pac 12. JJ is 21 only had one loss as a starter. Clutch on 3rd down better arm and more mobile
