I don't know when this started, but for whatever reason it's like no matter how much kishimoto clearly bends towards bringing them together, setting concrete reasons for them to have affections toward each other, it remains one-sided because it must. it's kind of bullshit, the fans have always complained. but romance for main characters just isn't allowed to happen in that genre.

The “questionable animation” is actually an animation technique known as “smearing”. It’s used to exaggerate expressions especially in an animation fight where there is a lot of fast motions. If there was no smearing then you wouldn’t see the speed of the characters. Fun little animation fact for y’all :)

Yo man I appreciate how much love you gave this fight, for me it was the peak of the show. The remaining seasons were great don’t get me wrong but this was beyond S tier in so many ways. By the way, that animation style was deliberate. It was meant to evoke the rage and chaos of Naruto’s perspective through both his and kurumas eyes (who senses using chakra). Notice how it starts and stops with the transition to nine tails. Idk why but the first time I watched the fight that crazy animation style sent my ass. Unpopular Opinion: The animation in the pain fight is absolute top shelf and amongst the best in the series. It's expressive, dynamic, desperate and chaotic. i understand how the looneytoons bonk can take folks out of it, but beyond that it's a great way to convey the reckless abandon, the absolute havoc an out of control tailed beast and traumatized kid would and should have. It's not poor quality, it's not low budget or lazy. It is 100% deliberate and masterful. You may dislike it of course. Doesn't make it bad though.
