Particularly on a hard court where Davydenko neither feared, nor respected Nadal’s straightforward game. If memory serves, Nadal only wriggled out of a 2007 clay court tie in Hamburg by the skin of his balls in a brutal 3 set thriller. I suppose he was Injured then too right?! Tennis is all about match ups and Nadal was fortunate not to run into this guy more often during his prime years.

2009 was one of the highest-quality years we've seen in tennis history, maybe even the best single year. For Davydenko to stand out in London given the caliber of tennis we had been seeing was just insanity. And I'm incredibly glad he is remembered well for it.

Every player that qualified for the top 8 in the 2009 edition were extremely accomplished players and had very strong years. 6 of the 8 had at least one former appearance in a grand slam final. That week, Davydenko (who wasn't one of the 6) beat almost all of them apart from Djokovic and he wasn't far off in claiming victory in that loss either. Insanely impressive.

Nadal has won indoor Madrid in 2005, the tournament which was replaced by Shanghai from 2009. So Nadal is not missing the 8th masters of the year. It's not his fault that the 8th masters of the year changed place in the middle of his career, such things happen from time to time. Anyway, he doesn't need golden masters. At this point of his career he should only focus on slams.

Fun fact: Davydenko turned pro at 18 (1999), and retired at 33, not before earning 16 million USD in prize money, which made him the 26th all-time leader in earning. (Wiki) 7 years after turning pro, at age 25, he reached #3 in ranking. That's pretty good for a career of 15 years. He was last seen working with Karen Khachanov unofficially.

His ability to hit balls from the baseline no matter what amount of topsin, flat or speed the ball had is just surreal and haven't seen that kind of efficient game in the so called next gen. His shot placement was extraordinary ( my personal opinion. Don't want any debates on it).The next gen are good in their own ways but I still would chose players like davydenko, nalbandian, Rios over the next gen. Their matches were a treat to watch. The intensity was just something else when these guys were at their best

I know this wasn't really the point of your comment, but reading what you said, I really wish we could have seen davydenko vs the next gen. I especially would love to see how dominic thiem (i know he's not really considered next gen) would have done vs davydenko. The intensity on that court would be off the charts, but one of thiem's trademarks is that he takes nadal's heavy spin forehand style, and implements it off both wings and also aims closer to the baseline. This forces most of his opposition back or else they will be overwhelmed, but as you said, davydenko would have taken those balls on the baseline and I would LOVE to see who would break down in such a contest. would thiem overwhelm davydenko? or would davydenko be able to handle the heat and steal away all of thiem's time?

@@kevinchang8090 well even I would like to see that match!!! Because davydenko's ability to place the ball no matter the speed or spin on the ball is something I tried to instill in my game as well. And as for Thiem he has the ability to hit a winner from literally anywhere on the court. If he takes the ball early he tries to put a lot of speed and flatness otherwise when well behind the baseline he puts speed and a nice amount of topspin. And as for thiem's backhand that is another beautiful aspect of his game! And as for the outcome of the match I guess thiem might be the one who would emerge as winner.

Good group of players there. All three can take the ball on the rise and hit great angles. I always trash Nadal because he can be beaten so easily by truly great players who take the ball on the rise like Davydenko did here. These great players can be forgiven for their lack of consistency.

It's because the rhythm he plays with, he is an absolute maniac hitting on the rise and firing both wings, Federer LOVE to play that rhythm it doesn't bother him at all, Roger's only weakness is the the topspin defensive players

Yes, he played lightsout tennis, but the difference this time was that he kept strong even when things became tough. He kept fighting and believing non-stop. he was known as the jet-legged russian. he was regularly merciless in the first set of any match but then used to become tired and the spirit went down. thats why when it comes to long grand slam matches he couldnt deliver. he never lacked talent as u can see after brilliant forehands of roger and delpo he instead of defending pounced on them and hit a forehand of his own double quick. a player of tremendous quality.

Davydenko had trouble closing out matches. He led Federer in the 2006 and 2010 Australian Opens and the 2007 French Open, but lost. However, at his best he was a superb player.

Davydenko was on a roll at the end of 2009 and at the beginning of 2010. It only came to an end against Federer at the AO2010 in the 2nd set... the rest is history.

The tennis world was stacked against Davydenko he never got the breaks, late finishes on courts then selected for early starts this happened again in the Australian that year, never got a decent sponsorship deal and then got accused of cheating, notice that the true sign of a champion is what you do in defeat ...
