There's nothing wrong with not liking certain songs, albums, or eras of a band. You don't owe it to a band to like everything they do, you owe it to yourself to only like what you actually like. If anything, I think having standards and holding your favorite bands to them is worthy of far more respect than reflexively saying everything a band has done is good. I'm sorry, but I don't think anyone has ever had an entire career beyond criticism.

For me, Springsteen is the artist that I thought of when I saw this topic. ‘Born to Run’ through his first greatest hits (1995) is the era that I love. His music was so important to me. But at some point, I just didn’t connect with it anymore. I kept buying his new albums, but didn’t really enjoy them. So, eventually I stopped. People shouldn’t buy music they don’t like and will never listen to - you don’t need to be a completist to be a fan.

I'm a metal head because I played in a metal band for a decade, but I'm big into all kinds of music. Yesterday - I was listening to Overkill & Testament. Today - I'm listening to Michael Jackson, Prince, Huey Lewis, & Culture Club. If you get labeled - who cares what others think. You have to stay true to yourself

Mötley Crüe's problem is that they're a part-time "band" with band members who would rather be making other kinds of music and a singer who doesn't take his job seriously. It exists strictly to make money, not music. It's sad. I loved that band for close to 40 years, but it's a shell of itself and they should have stayed retired if they weren't going to put 100% of their energy into being a band. There is no reason in the world for Mötley Crüe to be covering The Beastie Boys and Madonna, and doing it horribly.

In all fairness Cantrell was and is the heart of AIC. Duvall does a good job, Devil Put Dinosaurs Here is a great Alice album and I love Cantrell’s solo stuff. Motley Crue I’ll always love the 80s stuff but that band has been done for decades.

I've made this comment to other's talking about AIC many times before and here it is again.. A couple of years ago (not exactly sure when it was) Mike Inez had this long time bass tech Scotty. Scotty had cancer and sadly passed away, the band set up a go fund me to get fans to contribute to his hospital bills. They lost big points for me that day, here we have these multi millionaire musicians trying to get fans to pay for their crew's bills/problems? That always left a sour taste in my mouth, never did regain that iota or so of respect back for them. It doesn't obviously matter what one guy says and they won't have any trouble sleeping at night. I still own the albums, I've seen them five times live, still like them but ya.. that was a greedy silly misstep IMO

I said to myself right before you said it, the metal dudes. THEY were the reason it took me so long to get into Metallica and other metal. Thankfully I had a friend in high school who would trade me tapes and records for work in drafting class in HS. I graduated in '88. He turned me on to bands like Slayer and Anthrax. Also had a cool suite mate in college who played "And Justice for All" constantly. Those songs are pretty damn catchy. Nothing i hate more than pretentious music snobs. Im an emotional person and i love music that moves me in EVERY direction.

@griefforest18703 ай бұрын
The poster child for this topic for me is Amon Amarth. First four albums are brilliant, even though the two in the middle might have one or two mediocre songs, they make up for it with energy and viciousness. Then the three albums in the mid to late 2000s were a tad worse, but still highly engaging. I actually came in with the first half of the 2010s, Surtur Rising and Deceiver are lacking the power and melodies of the early stuff but it's still enjoyable - but let's say I came in with "With Oden on our side" or even "Versus the world" I would've been disappointed. The last album I bought from them was Jomsviking, which was mostly not my thing. Berserker was even worse and I listened to the first single of their current album and thought: Oh my oh my. So you could say I love 98-02, highly regard 04-08 and could get down with some songs on Surtur and Deceiver. Their commercial peak really began with Thundergod, but somehow those last three albums - where I jumped (dragonhead) ship - catapulted them into an headlining arena band. It's not that I'm anti commerciality per se - I just think they lost the plot music-wise.

I am with you on Motley Crue. Motley was one of my top 5 bands back in the day. Even though I keep buying their newer stuff but never really listening to it. Always go back to the earlier stuff. I do agree that bands can change to keep it fresh, but I do feel they need to be true to their sound. Mike Tramp is an example with the songs of White Lion. The original is there but with a newer sound.

Some bands and artists will put out a record, and it kills the vibe for good. Or do stuff, and it's just a vibe-killing thing. Like when Vince left the first time it has been over for me since. I cannot connect to anything Motley Crew after Feelgood. Springsteen killed it for me after that Philadelphia record. Mellencamp did that folksy record with that "To Washington" song and I can't connect with him anymore. Ramones are like 4 records for me and it's the first four. But I call myself a Ramones fan. Pearl Jam is only the first three records for me. I own all of the PJ records, Ramones, Springsteen records, but they just don't resonate with me anymore. And believe me, I tried. But once it's gone it's hard to get it back.

Asia, loved the 1st 4 albums even through a lot of people thought each album got worst. Then John Wetton left and was replaced by John Payne, I thought it brought life to the band again. Asia now hides from the John Payne years. Wetton came back but the albums were very boring and now that John Wetton past away Geoff Downes has formed a new Asia I can only hope that means a new Asia album. The John Payne years were good, I wish Downes would have added John Payne back. Kudus to Anthony & Blondie love that band.

I agree with the statement , "the bands don't change..we do!" Motley was my FAVORITE band when their first 4 albums came out..but I was aged 12-16 when they came out! Right in my most influential years of music as a teenager ..all those albums (even Theater of Pain) have special meanings to me bc of the the time they came out (Jr high and high school years).. my musical tastes change thru the years, as they do for most people. Here's the deal, though..if Motley Crue put out 3 more albums that sound exactly like Shout at the Devil, what would the narrative be? "Man, I wish they'd write something different!" I haven't stuck with the Crue the last 30 years, but it's more to do with me. I'm 54 now..the memories I have of the Crue when I was Jr High/High School age will always be there, but I'm not that person anymore,and they're not that band anymore. Also, I can't think of any band that I have liked every single thing they have put out..my fav bands thru the years, Maiden, Journey, VH, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Stones..every one of them have put out an album/albums that I don't like. But its more to do with me than what they're putting out!

Genesis is a band that comes to mind who changed their style completely through the years. Journey was the same. Fleetwood Mac started as blues and changed completely but I still like most of it. AiC are my all time favourite band ever. Sorry Anthony, but the Duvall era is amazing. BGWTB is one of their all time best and a classic record in its own right now. Layne was incredible, no doubt about that. You can't replace a Layne Staley. But Layne also checked out of life a long time before he eventually passed. He didn't care about the band anymore. I'm glad the band didn't just give up and went on to release more classic material and I can't wait to hear new stuff and see this incredible band live again.

I think, that we as fans grow and evolve as we get older. Sometimes that means that our opinions on bands or albums will change. I could hate a song or album by my favorite band one month and then 2 years later I go back and love it. But on the flipside, bands will also grow and change. Sometimes it's for the best and sometimes it's not. To me, a band is truly a band when they aren't completely wrapped in a specific era or member of the band. They can evolve and get better no matter what, members can alternate over the years and they still make good music. Kamelot is one of those to me. They've change lead singers at least 3 times now and just get better. Green Day, I enjoy every single album. I even love the album most people hate. But they have songs that I don't like too. But they always do what they want to and have fun and it always works out well in the end. Black Sabbath I'm not super into, but I've found I don't really like Ozzy's music. I like a few songs and I can acknowledge that their songs are just not for me but the stuff after Ozzy left just works for me more. Still not super into them but I'm that one that likes the unusual from them. Motley Crue has never been a favorite band for me. They are very hit or miss on songs and I don't love any of the albums. They just come off as a gimmick band. It feels like they aren't in it for the music. They just want to keep the Rockstar lifestyle and need to fuel their egos all the time. I think Scorpions are the opposite of that. Everything they do feels genuine and sounds amazing. Jethro Tull is another one too. Great stuff all around. Pink Floyd, even though they aren't a favorite for me, have great stuff regardless.
@esteeb673 ай бұрын
I don't mind being that guy. I checked out on the Crue when they released Girls Girls Girls. I hate that record. I kind of came back for Dr. Feelgood, but then was out permanently. Similar thing happened to me with Ozzy. I didn't really care for the Ultimate Sin. I loved No Rest though. Then was kind of iffy on No More Tears (great song, but I hate the ballads). I liked Ozzmosis, but after that nothing. There are a few bands that I still collect every album: ACDC, Iron Maiden, Priest, The Stones, Floyd. All of those bands have had releases that I feel are subpar, but they still remained dependable enough that I continued. ACDC is my favorite band, but I don't mind people bashing Fly On The Wall and Blow Up Your Video. I still like those records, but realize they aren't as strong as most others. I really dislike Fear of the Dark... but that doesn't mean I am not a fan of Maiden.

Interesting topic today. There are bands who "let me down" but I have to be careful in applying that label. To let me down I have to sense that the band has not put much heart & soul into the songwriting and performances or that they are playing it very safe (staying inside the box) and not pushing themselves musically or simply trying to repeat a previous success. David Bowie's follow up to LET'S DANCE was TONIGHT which came across as a mostly uninspired pale imitation of LET'S DANCE - I was let down. In contrast, Fleetwood Mac's TUSK was an inspired often off the wall and unexpected follow up to RUMOURS - not let down. There are plenty of times my favourite musicians have put out albums that are not for me because of the musical direction that they have chosen but I cannot apply that "let down" label despite the sometimes very out of the box, original, and creative songs. I have to applaud that Fleetwood Mac was not standing still with TUSK. Same for Neil Young with his RE-AC-TOR and TRANS albums in the early 80s. These were two very experimental and unexpected and not what I wanted from Neil Young but, again, I have learned to applaud artists when they do something different, that they are pushing themselves musically, and the musical project has been approached seriously and with full commitment. Another example is Elton John's PEACHTREE ROAD road album which I don't necessarily enjoy because of the genre of the songs but, again, I can't be let down by the artist because, in this case, the music is still good - just not my cup of tea. I am only "let down" when I feel that the artist is playing way too safe and may be focused on repeated financial success or feel that it is an album of "been there, done that."

Motley Crue was on another level in the 80's and this goes for so many bands and musicians. Once that era faded out it takes away from the music and so many continued to make great music like Mike Tramp but again nothing like the White Lion days. I always loved music but it was radio until we got cable and my cousin introduced me to RATT and I was instantly a fan!! My stepdad loved Sabbath (Ozzy) so I was a kid and loved my comics and I heard Ironman!! Of course Headbangers Ball was my everything and that was my love for music!! I still love different types of music but 80's Glam Metal even though we just called it Metal back then. I love KISS but no makeup during the 80's is my favorite but that's what I grew up with. I still love everything from KISS 💋 but that's still my favorite from them. Metallica is one of those bands that were on another level in the 80's and early 90s but they weren't the same even though they still made good music.

Bands change, the members age and their own lives become a different set of emotional responses and expressions. Change is the natural order of things but so many "fans" just get stuck in a time warp and don't adjust because they seem to want to hang on to that original stuff to maintain their own youth. At least that's the way I see it. There's nothing wrong with it but we can't expect some 60 year old guy to be burning the fire when they don't have the flames any more. I just saw a recent video of Scorpions in concert and to be honest Klaus Meine looked like a frail old man who could barely walk and his voice wasn't very good either. I remember them when they were rocking hard and it was a little sad seeing them now.. I don't think Yes could play Gates Of Delirium any more because it's just too hard for Howe to burn up the frets like that. That's not to say he isn't still way better than most, but he's just not "that guy" any more. Experience and aging really changes perspectives, especially when your own sense of mortality gets closer.

I like all eras of Black Sabbath/Heaven & Hell. They are all distinct enough to easily distinguish from one another, but at the same time Tony Iommi's riffs and guitar solos are all great in each era. Personally, no doubt, Ronnie James Dio is my favorite vocalist and Tony Martin isn't too far behind. But, Ozzy was the best showman of those three. They all have their strengths and Ozzy and Martin have some weaknesses. Martin is a great studio vocalist but really didn't live up to it when he performed live. Ozzy was great at working the crowd even though his vocals aren't technically as good as Dio's vocals or Martin's studio vocals. That being said, My top 6 Black Sabbath albums contain 2 albums from each of those 3 vocalists. Also, each vocalist is on at least one of my least favorite Black Sabbath albums. As for Ian Gillan and Glenn Hughes albums in the catalog, there are parts on them I like and parts I don't. Though, it did seem weird at first hearing Ian Gillan singing on a Black Sabbath album since he's ingrained as Deep Purple's primary vocalist. It's just a shame that some Black Sabbath fans of the Ozzy-era dismiss the other eras, as there is some great music in the other eras, regardless of the lead singer or musicians on them. Tony Iommi has been the only mainstay on all 20 albums (counting The Devil You Know as one of them even though it's under the Heaven & Hell band name.)

You're not alone on Motley Crue. I grew up with them in the '90s. I remember buying a Japanese import of Generation Swine 3 days before the album's official release at Rock Dreams shop in New Jersey. I actually liked that album back then and still like it today, though I understand why it wasn't hitting with old fans at the time. The Crue were MY band in the '90s up through New Tattoo. I saw them live in '99 with the Scorpions at Holmdel, NJ, then twice on the New Tattoo tour, and a final time in 2005 when they reunited with Tommy Lee for first time. I LOVED that band. But they have truly lost me for new music. SOLA just never worked for me. "The Dirt" was a fun movie but terrible song. "Dogs of War" doesn't even remotely sound like Motley. John 5 might be talented, but his sound does NOT work for that classy blues based rock that Mick did so well. I literally laughed out loud when I heard the "Fight For Your Right" cover song. They have jumped the shark and it's just embarrassing now. It makes me sad. If a band's going to tour as a nostalgia act, I say just leave at that and don't write new music. Some bands are still willing to put the effort into making great new music (Styx, Deep Purple, even Dokken's latest was quite good). But you can tell that Motley just doesn't care. They're a "brand" now. New stuff like this just tarnishes their legacy. But I'm sure people said the same with Corabi in '94. Or certainly Swine (which I still like). But this new stuff somehow feels even worse than their lowest lows before.

Mick Mars was the sound of the Crue. John 5 is spectacular but its not the Crue to me....

Its a tough thing, I mean there are artists I have everything they have done and I just don't like everything, all artists have something in their catalog I just cant get with or like Anthony was saying loving Pearl Jam just not crazy about Backspacer. I think everyone has that with their favorites, I mean I love Bon Jovi and yes its different now as opposed to then, but they have albums THEN that I was not crazy about like 7800, and later ones like What About Now which I thought was not very good at all. But their new one, different YES, but one of my most played of their records. I think also with CRUE and this is my opinion not being a big fan of theirs but do you think their BS and drama sometimes plays into it? People always say separate the artist from the music and I get it, but sometimes some artists can be all about BS it just seems they phone in the music, me personally I thought any idea of covering the Beatsie Boys was not a good idea, I know they are considered RAP but they are also iconic for bridging the gap of rap and rock and their albums have more than people think. SO I think you can feel so many different things, my music taste or what I listen to has always been all over place, mostly leaning pop rock but I know a lot of local indie artists so a lot of my top listened stuff no one has even heard of which I dont mind at all. For me I can listen to the new Mike Tramp and then jump on the new Sabrina Carpenter and some will say which is better? I mean that is just a dumb question because they are two different people, artist, eras, etc...comparisons and questions like that just annoy me.

Lifelong Crue fan..but yep the new single sucks! I very much curate my collection so I'm not too bothered if a band releases a bad album..it simply wont make my collection.

People don’t need to settle for mediocrity and also don’t need to like every single thing a band does.

I hate when bands get political they need to shut up and play music

For me I got a few I'd like to speak of... Green Day: Just not been a fan of anything they've done post American Idiot, I absolutely adore all the prior albums from 1991-2004... but the mix is so sterile lately, and the band just haven't had the chops it seems. Metallica: (sort of) I love Metallica, they're my all-time favorite band, no doubt in my mind. However, while there is some great material on the last three three albums, the mixing and production is sterile and bland, the songs drone on and could use a few minutes trimmed off here and there, and 70 minute albums are just too long for me. Death Magnetic could be phenomenal with a good mix but goddamn is it brickwalled and flat. Ozzy Osbourne: Another legend I just cannot get behind lately, I love everything up through Ozzmosis, that record is his last great one and same with my critique of Green Day and Metallica, his new stuff is stale, uncreative and with generic production. Absolutely LOVE and respect these artists, will always check out their new material, but it just doesn't do it too much for me. Honorable mentions: Guns N' Roses Five Finger Death Punch

Guns n roses only released one originals axl rose solo album since 1991!. I would say ozzmosis is not very good either, think being in black sabbath again demotivated ozzy to try as hard in solo work since then. Only the last one I thought was really good. I thought death magnetic was really good regardless of the production. The last two albums not quite as good.

Its rare to like a band for a long period of time and like everything they do. THeres bands Ive loved since I was 14 - Jovi, GnR, Crue, Skid Row, Aerosmith - to name a few but I dont love all their output. For me Crue have been shit they decided to let Corabi go and release the awful gerneration swine. Dogs of War is just garbage. Its numetal rubbish. Jovi have been so poor since Richie left and you could so say even before that. GnR not released a decent song since Izzy left (I dont include spaghetti incident as covers and Chinese Democracy as Axl solo record), Skid Rows last effort was decent but the singers left and it took them since 95 to release anything good. Aersosmith been poor since they released jush push play. Pearl Jams new album is my album of the year but they have released a ton of rubbish since Ten, Vs and Vitology. Metallica have released the awful st anger, patchy load, re-load and Death magnetic. I think its impossbile for a band thts been going for many years not to release some rubbish

My favorite band is not the real band anymore. Nazareth is not Nazareth. It Pete agnews Nazareth. R.I.P. the king of rock Dan McCafferty. Manny Charlton and Darrell sweet I love all Nazareth except the last 2 albums with Carl sentence he doesn't belong fronting a classic band like Nazareth as I said the band is now Pete agnews Nazareth
