it is literally the most terrifying experience asking my mum for a day off school when i'm sick. i spend about 10 minutes stood outside her bedroom door at 7:00am trying to work up the courage to tell her i'm ill - it's about 7000x worse when i'm not actually sick - 3 older sisters means she's literally spotted every way of knowing if you're faking or not. i have to start prepping my fake illness a few days before to make it seem as real as possible. it's the biggest task in the world omfg

I actually think it's selfish to come in to work if you're sick with something contagious. Then you could get everyone else sick and other people don't come to work, because sick. It's just better all around to stay at home until it's gone. Unfortunately, in American this is pretty much the hardest thing to accomplish if you're at the bottom rung. When I worked for Steak 'N Shake a few years ago I tried to call out, but they told me they really needed me. I had a cold: runny nose, sneezing, coughing, the whole nine. And I was a line cook. I tried to be as clean as possible. Everytime I had to blow my nose I washed my hands and I covered my face when I coughed with my upper arm, and I also made sure I had the plastic gloves on 100% of the time unless I washed my hands or contaminated then. It was the worst! And a customer even noticed and said to my manager, "Shouldn't you send her home? She doesn't look well..." Bastard still didn't. You'd think if a customer is concerned about an employee's health enough to say something about it they'd have sent me home--but nupe!

My dilemma is how much sick is sick enough to call in sick? Most of the time when I am sick, I don't feel like I'm dying or anything. I feel very uncomfortable, but I could still move around the house slightly dazed because of sickness. So I don't know when it is bad enough where I should call in sick, and when I get to class or something, my classmate or professor would tell me that I could've called in sick and rest up.

If you're feeling *at all* sick it's best to stay home. It's not that you can't function, it's that you're being so very generous in making everyone else share your disease ;). Seriously, it's good hygiene and best business practice to avoid spreading germs at work/school and just rest up for a day.

How sick depends on how many days you have left and how far into the year you are. Also what the policy is. If the company pays you for unused days I'd be in and get sent home.

As a manger in a retail establishment I get call-offs often. As soon as people start to explain why, I cut them off, say it's alright we will see you tomorrow. Hope things get better. There are a few reasons for this. 1. If they are sick, then there is no reason trying to convince them to come in or give them a guilt trip about not coming in. 2. If they are not sick, then I why try and convince them to come in? If I do talk them into it, and they really don't want to be there, then they are going to probably have a bad attitude so I just don't want you there anyhow. If you are someone who mostly does # 2 well then you probably aren't going to be around vary long anyways. You never are. If you are someone who is mostly # 1 with the occasional (1 or twice a year) #2 then hey have an extra day, there are plenty of times that I ask people to work late/extra take a day and have fun. That's how I look at it anyway ...

A) they believe me and that freaks me out how easely that went or B) they don't care how sick I am and still ask me to come in at work and then realize I am makimg all the customers sick and vomiting everywhere. True fact, one manager said after hearing I was vomitting to vomit in a plant. I am happy I don't work in such situations no more. When an employee is sick they should stay home to avoid contamining the rest of the office plus making their health worst. Unbelievable

I got food poisoning, and I was vomiting so hard that I was shitting myself until 5 AM. Went to the hospital, got home around 10 AM. Called my boss to let him know that I wouldn't be going in for the next couple of days because I was still vomitting and I had to spend the entire day sitting on a toilet so I wouldn't ruin more clothes. His response? "Yeah, Matt is sick too. We all have to work when we're not feeling 100% sometimes. I expect to see you at 4 today." "I'm literally shitting my pants every time I throw up. Usually, I try to sound very normal and maybe just slightly sick because they know that people facking it cough all over the phone to make it more real. I also put in a lot of details into my "I'm sick" explanation (when it started, where it hurts, how long I've been in the bathroom barfing/on the toilet pooping my life out, etc.), because I've heard somewhere that when you lie about something, you might be more vague and stuff. But I try to stay out of the too disgusting stuff, somewhat. Or maybe I'm also overthinking the whole thing.

I always email in sick. Then I don't have to worry about sounding sick or not... As long as I throw in a typo or two to make it really look like I'm dying (I am intense about spelling). Also, it's a great way to make sure that my boss doesn't hear the airport announcements going on in the background. "What? Yes, I really was incredibly sick for a whole week. And yes, it does cause spontaneous skin pigment darkening that looks suspiciously like a tan."

We have this policy at my work where if you're going to call in sick you have to do so at least two hours before your shift so they can find a replacement. Since I always work extremely early, I set an alarm two hours before my shift to call in sick if I want to sleep in. My sleepy voice is so raspy that that I totally sound sick when I call. Works every time.

When I was a shiftworker in the iron ore industry in the NW of Western Australia, my workmates were having sickies left, right and centre. I only ever had a sickie when I was in bed with a bad case of the flu or something like that. One day, when there was nothing wrong with me, I thought I would give this a go and decided to call in sick. The call was very stressful but that wasn't the worst. I felt so guilty and remorseful all day that I didn't enjoy the day at all and dreaded going back to work the next day and having to face my workmates, who were going to ask what had been wrong with me. After this dreadful episode, I never had another sickie without being actually sick, even though, around me, most of my mates kept taking sickies without any side effects like guilt.
