As this episode of "When Phones Were Fun" hits the server, Samsung has just announced its Galaxy Note20 device family, the tenth generation of its stylus-centric smartphone first announced in 2011. The subject of today’s throwback is not that first Galaxy Note … but rather, an 18-year-old forerunner that folds like the Galaxy Z Flip; packs a stylus like the Galaxy Note; and despite its age, runs a true smartphone OS. The year is 2002, and the phone is the Samsung SPH-i500 - a pioneering smartphone from back in the days when Palms would fold!

When Phones Were Fun: Episode 8 features a deactivated Samsung SPH-i500 device purchased on eBay by MrMoble/Future plc and a Kyocera 7135 purchased on eBay by MrMobile/Future plc. No company paid a fee or otherwise offered compensation in exchange for this coverage, nor did any company preview or approve this content before publication.

@@Jaiysful Often times in media wether that be music, movies, KZbinr's etc etc, the more underrated they are, the more entertaining, high quality and all around more enjoyable they are in my opinion. For example: Beyonce is the biggest music star but i don't like her music and think she's overrated as all hell, bland pop music but she's gigantic, where as a small local band or musician who only pulls lets say 100k views/listens a song, maybe not even that much, is way more enjoyable and fun to listen to. You can tell that they put more work into their projects because they care more than the big rich dudes who can chuck anything out there and get millions of views and dollars. That's why there's so much crap out there. The small guys like our friend Mr.Mobile are where it's at.

Even if I've never used a certain old phone i love watching videos about old retro phones, it's amazing how fun and cool looking these phones are, crazy how far we've came. The "next generation came with mp3" statement is what made me love Windows Mobile. You didn't need to wait for a next generation. All you needed was a codec nicely packed in a .cab file and off you go. That's how my HTC P3600 would play the very legitimate .avi or .mpg films I'd convert to a lower resolution so that they could fit on the SD card.

I am obsessed with early mobile phones. They truely are the golden age of phones in terms of fun factor. At 3:32 where you thought back fondly of your techy memories I had the funniest thought -- imagine in 10 or 20 years someone having a KZbin channel just like yours and doing this series with the same jovial nostalgia ... They'd just be going through a tonne of same same looking flat slate phones lol 😂

I love Graffiti!! I could write faster on my Handspring Visor Prism than I could on paper. I even loaded it on my first few Android phones! The glyph system made total sense at the time. Phones were not powerful enough to do true handwriting recognition, so Palm made you draw the letters in a way the phone could recognize.
@thomasmallory4629

I thought I was the only one (re: Graffiti writing speed). And when Palm enabled the entire screen of their Zire 71 to be a writing surface (left side letters, right side numbers), I'd wind up using Graffiti in lieu of my normal handwriting, which led many a coworker to think I'd suffered a stroke or something....

Anybody could learn to write graffiti fast and reliably in an hour. I thought it was brilliant and still do, I have a graffiti app on my Note 5. I don't use it, because now I'm a Swype maniac. I still think that Palm OS was a beautiful usable system that rivals anything in 2020. There weren't that many variations but they weren't needed, because Palm OS was just so perfectly done. You never had to "learn" anything, because everything was completely obvious. And my Centro had still and video photography. And a web browser that worked fine for simple net searches. I miss it.

that Kyocera 7135 was a powerhouse of its time, I destroyed a college exam where I have to calculate weather data to design a drainage system, usually it takes almost 3 hours to finish using scientific calculator, I fizzled past it in a little more than an hour because I preloaded all the formula to the spreadsheet app (DataViz' Docs-To-Go). Back then in Indonesia, smartphones and PDAs were still Star Trek gadgets for most people, I've got mine bought 2nd hand from a gadget lover community.

That's a cool old smartphone, never heard of it before. Here's another cool suggestion Michael: Nokia N90. It was a smartphone that was way ahead of it's time with its almost "Retina" 259 ppi display in 2005 - 5 years before the first Retina iPhone 4. It was truly sharp back then, even passable by today's standards. It was also among one of the first devices capable of selfies with its turning 2 megapixel camera module. It was the device that got me started in photography and I'll always fondly remember it.

I had a Treo 680 and LOVED it!! I remember it being so futuristic and cutting edge. I got really, really good at Grafiti since I'd started the "Palm Life" with an m105, but having a full qwerty keyboard was so much better. I still have my 680, and it still works... even after being ran over 3 times (over the course of the last year I used it) by an Ambulance. I was an EMT at the time and used it for GPS navigation, pharmacological lookups and of course wasting time while waiting for a call to drop. Space Trader was my favorite Palm OS game. It helped pass many, many hours of downtime.

This series is so awesome. And i fondly remember my Handspring Treo 270... But my first "smartphone" was my trusty Handspring Visor Pro rocking a Visor Phone Springboard Module (the PDA had a Gameboy like cartridge slot in the back and there was a bulky phone cartridge available), that combined with a thumb keyboard (remember those?) created a Treo 600 like device that i lovingly called Frankenstein (i know, i know, that's the name of the doctor). Those were the days.

Loving this series. I also was a Sprint loyalist back then, and still fondly remember my LG MM-535, whatever that small double sided phone was with the leather case/battery... and my first smartphone, the PPC-6700. Thanks for all the nostalgia!

Really enjoying this series. Really brings me back in time. I was a child during this era and there were some wicked cool ads I'd see now and again watching Wheel of Fortune followed by Jeopardy every weeknight. I appreciate the trips you take me on.

Thanks for showing everyone the father of the Galaxy Note Series. Crazy to think about that this was the Note version of feature phones, and how far stylus phones have come since then.

I really like this series. I used to browse ebay listings to try and find cool old phones just to stare at them. It's nice to see I'm not the only one who likes the designs of phones from the past.

You've just done something that very few KZbin creators accomplish: You had an astonishing 100,000 people subscribe to your channel. We know that numbers on KZbin can get really big, but we hope that you don't lose sight of the reality behind that six-digit milestone. Each and every person who has subscribed to your channel has been touched by what you created. They were inspired, challenged or entertained. You achieved this milestone with hard work, perseverance and probably a healthy sense of humour too. What you've accomplished can't be taken away from you. And we'd like to recognise you and all your hard work with this Silver Creator Award, a small token of our esteem and respect. We know that you don't do this for rewards. You do it because you have a drive to create and share, and because you've found an audience who cares. Believe us when we say that we can't wait to see what you do next. A million subscribers may seem a long way off right now, but you're closer than you think. And we're rooting for you. Congratulations. Yours sincerely, Your 200thk subscribe Aysuh

My dad had a few 7135's, and as a child, I LOVED playing with them. Sadly, ours had issues with plasic fragility and broke very quickly, so I don't have any left, but I did find the box for it.

I love this looking-back series. Starting with a Palm Vx and using Palm devices until the last Treo, I am still writing Palm Graffity sometimes when I am in a hurry. It is still amazing how fast these devices were compared to the first 5 or so generations of WinCE/IOS/Android devices. 'Piloting Palm' is still a great read about that platform.

Absolutely loved this piece - I remember vividly lusting after this phone and wanting to jump to a smartphone but I just couldn’t bring myself to plunk that kind of money down for something without an external display since my Sanyo 5300 had one - and having flip phones since the StarTAC I wanted it to be a flip phone... and then I saw the I550 and fell in love... and I wanted... and waited... and then Sprint cancelled it. I never really forgave them for that for years - I had (and still have) an insanely good Sprint plan, so I never bounced over to Verizon or US Cellular (who also had it) for that Kyocera 7135 you mentioned, although rumors had spread that Sprint cancelled the I550 to get the Kyocera so I kept hoping Sprint would get that one too but they also never did. I ended up giving up and going to a Treo 650 when they came out a year or so later and have had a smartphone ever since - but man I wished they would have released that I550... that was such a unique device, and made up for everything the I500 lacked.... plus it just looked good. Had they released it, I’d have kept it til the hinge fell off I’m sure. I also feel like it would have sold a decent amount - and was different enough from the Treos. I still miss flipphones in general... if the new Razr wasn’t so low-spec’d and stuck on Verizon; and the ZFlip didn’t have so many reviews about being so fragile, I’d jump on one in a second.

I don't have the same nostalgic memories of actually using these things. I was born in 1997 and my first phone was the LG CU515 when I was in 6th grade in 2009. That being said, these always bring me nostalgic feelings of being in middle school. It's just interesting and I love these videos. Keep it up and stay safe! 🙂

Since 2002, I've had the pleasure of owning almost every smartphone you can think of, including the i500. Among them, the i500 was undoubtedly one of my favorites. It holds a special place in my heart, especially considering I transitioned from the Treo 300 to the i500. Those were the days of my college life, filled with cherished memories. I can't help but feel a tinge of sadness and nostalgia when I compare the current smartphone landscape to how it used to be. The excitement and enjoyment that smartphones once brought seem to have diminished over time. It's a sentiment that weighs on me. Nonetheless, I'm eagerly looking forward to the release of the ZFold5. I'm hopeful that it will recapture the essence and spirit that made the i500 so special. Perhaps this new device will rekindle the same sense of delight and satisfaction I experienced in the past.

To put it simple with modern devices. Smartphones are just PDAs with phone and network capatable. I remember having a PDA as a kid. It actually helped me a lot. I had a windows version which was network capatable. Loved having it.

I had this phone. Dropped it onto concrete from a second story apartment several times and it just kept ticking. I bought it used for $200 at a flea market in 2003 and put a sprint protection plan on it. After 2 years of straight use with no issues I decided to place a claim on the phone. Sprint replaced it with a treo 600 which sparked my interest in mobile smart devices.
