Dear Deejus, This was a very fun game. I think we had the exact opposite approaches, which was good. You prepared a lot and were very analytical. I was coming off of a hiatus, I did very little prep, and I was playing with my heart and emotion. I didn't expect to win, but I wanted you to feel something. I wanted the audience to feel something. Hopefully we accomplished that. I hope to make my own video about this game from my own perspective before the end of the year. Thanks again for a good game. Happy holidays everyone!

24:40 hot take: base skipping isn't really base skipping if you build the same number of units you would have been able to build otherwise. Building a copter instead of a second ground unit isn't really a base skip, since if you built that second ground unit you couldn't have built the copter. Your unit count is the same either way.

When Deejus talked about how if player A gets the first tank, player B should get the second and third tank; it made me realize how in instances where person A gets first pick, then person B gets second pic, then A gets 3rd pick, person B gets 4th pick, person A gets 5th pick ect. That is not fair. If person A gets first pick, then person B should get second and 3rd pick.

pretty much ever map on AWBW to be in rotation is balanced specifically around this, as Deej mentioned its A B B A. But he created a situation that forced a misplay from the opponent and allowed him to get A B A B

And yes, I got very baited into not taking the back cap first. If I did that then the cap phase would have been a lot easier. I did realize that we were "off the grid" very quickly and tried to double down on the crazy... I'll talk about it on my vid. ^_^

Over the long term, it seems like the meta is changing. Mangs would tell people to forego the immediate captures and push for contested ones way in the center, but retracted it because the consensus was, you take easy captures near the bases, and get your income established. In reality, it's probably much more map dependent. You should at least know what the contested properties are, and consider whether you should push for it early. Deejus found a way to take those key locations, and snowballed his advantage. I hope to see more novel openers, because I think other maps have untapped potential for strong positioning like this.
@aa01blue386 күн бұрын
Yes, and in fog also, Elagatua has shown plenty of contested rushing capture routes. Capture phases are really nuanced because skipping the safe caps don't actually impact your long term funding unless if they are longer chains, but you have to know how much you can skip before your vehicle timing is impacted
@brandonalsop12816 күн бұрын
If you forgo easy captures you can give up the abba or baab tank order due to lack of income so you really have to balance that with perceived economic advantage
@larsdejong73965 күн бұрын
I would also say it is CO dependent. As Kindle, you can do it much more easily than as Drake. Same goes with Sami vs eagle etc.
@sasquatch88544 күн бұрын
It's my understanding that you can rush properties if they are defensible and your battle plan has you having the resources in that area to defend them if required. But rushing to take properties you can't defend (which is often crossing the reinforce lines in the center) then you are just throwing infantry away and causing the infantry that then later have to back cap to arrive later and weakening your army.
@larsdejong73964 күн бұрын
@sasquatch8854 That sums it up pretty well, actually. You want to go for the contested properties, not the ones which are easily within your opponent's reach.

Dang you played this map so much better than I did. Yet thanks to you I feel encouraged to plan ahead and try harder in these games. I saw the black boat play and spot in the river that you showcased several turns in advance and got all excited when you made those moves. Little things that I notice like that made me think how much better I can be when I pay attention and really appreciate the process. This was a super helpful video!

that was some really good opener ngl my idea for p1 was also to city skip since like you said p1 don't need the immediate cap for the first tank like p2 does, but I was going to pick Sami and just yolo stream infantry to enemy HQ. lost in R2 so it never happened (and well if I was p2 I would've probably gone Kindle) again, well played, and I think you've had good strategies for every round in the tournament so far. I was being stubborn and picked Adder instead of Jess in R2, I figured Jess was better but not *that* much better than Adder, but no Jess was just the much better pick and would've spared much grief over missing KO thresholds
@monsterchief1176 күн бұрын
I knew it was the blackboat! I was like wait a minute, you can move behind on the mountain or silo safely if you're faster. It can get really ugly in that spot if you mess up.
@crawfy486 күн бұрын
25:37 early rockets from the weak base would probably prevent such baseblocks, but the opportunity cost would be high
@larsdejong73965 күн бұрын
A rocket is just a massive target for copters.

You’re describing tactics vs strategy at the end there. Tactics are the micro-decisions of how you move individual units while strategy is your overall game plan, the bigger picture if you will. Sun tzu is a big fan of strategy. He’d be a grandmaster of AWBW.
@HappySquid896 күн бұрын
The move to attack the Medium Tank on the base with the Copter was genius. Excellent use of both of the chokepoints there.
@eduardrindt33766 күн бұрын
That Blackboat boost is incredible. The greedy early captures I believe can be countered if the enemy knows what you're doing, but the blackboat play is just a thing of beauty that forces your opponent to delay/yield the comm tower capture or commit a tank to the corner (cause Recons suck here). Kudos to both Mr.Greensuit and Deejus for finding that.
@mrgreensuit73795 күн бұрын
I just did it when we were practicing live like it was the natural thing to do. It's kind of weird it was not replicated in every div 1 game to me. My walking mid to the contested property was a little more tricky I think.

Just like chess, knowing opening theory can provide a massive advantage. If anyone wants to climb the ladder then they need to prepare to spend a lot of time figuring out their opening, short-term, and long-term goals prior to the match starting. Not my playstyle, but will lead to a higher level of play.
@mintcake26686 күн бұрын
This reminds me of the match where Deejus built first turn artillery. He can really do some crazy opening if he put enough time into it.
@dillon97036 күн бұрын
20:20 I think orange retreating his comm tower infantry to his city would have been a way better defence. 1. you can't attack into it 2. if you go for comm tower and he gets the silo interrupt 3. the infantry by his HQ would have been able to 2v1 you (and not needing to divert the tank down) still a good delay though, as if orange went for this play instead you could just use your infantry near the port to make it a 2v2?

It gives me no small amount of pleasure that, after watching Deej games for two years, I clocked to the Black Boat strategy about 3 minutes before you mentioned it. Those BBs look landlocked and useless at a glance, but their mobile utility is not to be understated, and dat dere mountain + silo combination is very ripe for frustrating the Comm capture indeed. I may be some random div 2 scrub, but I also used my black boat to contest the comm tower. Its interesting how differently my match played out though. In my match, we both got early mechs and destroyed the pipe seam to prevent that awkward situation MD Tank got into where the weak base gets cut off from the battle.
@sherrdreamz72326 күн бұрын
With Kindle I would have sent an Arty to bust through the pipeseam if I could do so without losing tempo. Honestly though if I were against Deejus opening in this match an Arty wouldn't have been possible to build on the weakside. That's why aggressive positioning can really overwhelm your opponents even if it doesn't "always" lead to superior engagements. Being passive on maps with significant chokepoints can be a deathsentence. You want to exert pressure in the earlygame as much as possible typically. Always look for optimal placements that will give you more options 2 or 3 turns from your current one depending on your opponents moves. In that way high level Advance Wars is very similar to Chess.

Hello Deej, Thanks for the video. Do you think its an "always viable" strategy to go for the forward-contester property first ? Im a new player (fog) and tend to always do that as im a very eco-oriented rts player but often find myself behind in the midgame. (I think its mostly due to me overextending in early game, but maybe im simply too greedy)
@captainpocky6 күн бұрын
The main thing is you have to figure out how much you can skip before it affects your vehicle chains in the first few turns. For example yellow in this map was hurt pretty badly by skipping the early cap and not being able to build a tank
