Ah yes...the Jorou spider....I'm VERY familiar with that particular spider...I live in Georgia...next to the woods. EVERY summer now I will have at LEAST 12 of the dang things building their golden webs around my house...and on my long back porch? Oh dear...there can be up to 8 or more of them there alone....I'm actually gonna start spraying this year. Normally I don't begrudge them much on the back porch cause I don't really use it for much other than looking at the weather on some days but I plan on hanging some cloths out this summer to dry (mostly REALLY small batches of towels and the like) and I don't want them sneaking in. Plus side of letting them...well..hang around (pardon the pun) is they help keep the stink bugs and giant freaking European Hornets out...damn hornets are 2 inches long and as thick as my thumb...I do NOT like having THOSE sneak into my house.

I was one of the few that actually had it right from the beginning, so it was kind of a shock to see like half the internet all realizing at once. I was told I was wrong about it a few times before then, though, so I started assuming I was actually mispronouncing it but was in too deep to stop. Being right was kinda vindicating, ngl.

My great grandfather apparently skinned a possum once he found recently dead in his yard to cook (family was wasn’t poor but they weren’t as well off so opportunistic with food was how they got by) anyway back to the story. He skins the dead possum…only for it to 🤬 jump up and run five feet away WITHOUT ITS SKIN before passing away. My great grandfather was apparently so stunned by it he couldn’t look at a possum the same way afterwards. And yes this is a true story from my father.

Honestly, I'm not too much an arachnophobe, especially with regards to Tarantulas or Daddy -Longlegs which I know can't kill or do significant harm to me; I'm slightly more cautious around Brown Recluses and Black Widows, largely because they're found where I live and their venom is deadly... to an extent (I grew up being taught that they are instantly lethal, that nobody survives encounters with them; it wasn't until my high school years, when my Biology teacher informed us that many people often tend to oversell how 'deadly' Widow or Recluse venom actually is; it's _potentially_ fatal for elderly, small children, people with compromised immune systems, the light work of the population, but the people who pronounced them killers did so back in a time before antivenom or antibiotics were common, were reliable enough to actually save someone, back when the solution to most problems was to string a tourniquet on a limb then remove it with an unsanitized bonesaw and pray they don't die from sepsis; with the advancements of modern medicine, presence of first-aid kits in most folks houses, and awareness of the habits and ecological distribution of these spiders, allowing us to thus avoid them or create pesticides for them, nullifying any danger they pose to us, Widows and Recluses aren't as mind-numbingly pants-browningly horrifying as they used to be; in fact, because of how scared people get when they hear that these spiders are in their neighborhood, they go full on 'Extirminatus' 'Arachno-Genocide' in the area, aggressively spraying down the zone with poisons, fly-paper, cockroach motels, and other traps and weapons for dealing with perceived vermin), but I'm not entirely scared shitless of them when I see one on the other side of a room, too far from me to climb up my pants leg, under my shirt, and onto my back where I can't reach them. In that case, I slowly walk over to get a newspaper or flyswatter and try to squash it before it even notices by presence, while keeping just enough distance to have it not get on me. Furthermore, I actually appreciate what spiders do for us, by culling an insect I dread and despise more than arachnids (but still less than bees, yellowjackets, dirt-daubers, hornets, wasps, and other stinging, buzzing hellspawn sent to punish humanity; severe melissophobe, first and foremost): mosquitoes. I live in the Southern States, where we got chronic flooding, marshy bayous, and blistering tropical heat almost year-round (Summer is Hell Squared by the Surface Area of the Sun), and because of the humid, wet and hot climate, we got mosquitoes by the crap-ton. And mosquitoes are deadly parasites that spread tinier microscopic parasites and diseases every time they decided it's Happy Hour when they swarm you in clouds to plunge their proboscises into one of your veins and suck your blood out. Parasites and diseases like Yellow Jack, Typhoid, West Nile, Malaria, and so on. Spiders help cull the mosquito menace by eating them in droves, along with other verminous insects that threaten to ruin the crops we grow, which would lead to mass starvation. So, I salute our manifold spooders; God bless you Shelob, wherever you are!😁😂🤣

man i found a black widow hanging out in my compost box last year.... i squished the shit out of that bitch, first time i ever came across one, i usually find wolf spiders running about or jumping spiders. i will not lie, i do have some arachnophobia but its all the spiders fault cause they like falling on me and giving me ptsd. I was rained on by a whole hoard of spiders from a tree when i was younger (i was in a canoe with my brother and he parked us under a tree, scaredest ive ever been). I also had one dive bomb onto my head when i walked out my fathers front door once.... spiders have something against me i swear. Like im not too scared i wont squish em or stick em in a cup and yeet them off into the neighbors yard but if they touch me they forfeit their will to live.
