He's lovely, genuinely funny and warm-hearting. He's an Italian Catholic, I can only guess how important and big an honour it is for him that the Pope wanted to talk to him; to invite him to watch his film must have been absolutely mind-blowing. Hence his excitement here. Southern Europeans, we are a lot more expressive of their feelings. That's the norm in our cultures. Which is the opposite of the British culture in that respect. His excitement is nothing to laugh at.

He steals my heart every time I watch him. He is a very lucky man to be so passionate about life itself. Life is Beautiful was the hardest movie I have ever watched, I want to cry every time I hear the music and see Roberto's face from the film. At some point, I think he wanted to become a priest. I am glad he chose to make movies and perform, instead.

Roberto is a example of openess, he went on a foreign tv talking and improvising in a language that is not his, and the two of them just acted superior because he didn't get pop corn (actually the british pronunciation of it). Apart from having accomplished the rare feat of remaining a child, I think Benigni is an excellent litmus test: If you find him annoying or over-the-top, you've probably been hanging around dead people for far too long. Also, if you haven't seen it yet, try to track down Il Piccolo Diavolo, featuring Benigni and an italian speaking Walter Matthau...not to mention that it also puts his invitation to meet the Pope in a very comical light.

How unfortunate they kept breaking his flow making fun of him instead of having fun WITH him (which is not hard to do really!) :) Graham clearly didn't do much research on Benigni or he'd have known the broad scope of this man's intelligence... We actually watched this show live before it was telecast the next day. We laughed the entire two hours of taping. Roberto Bernini was really an excellent comedian that he can bring the whole audience laugh in to tears and the atmosphere was really awesome. A lot of Interviewers I have seen, act differently around a Foreign person. They usually speak a lot slower and refrain from jokes and fast humour. But Graham is so wonderful, he is just his usual self around everybody, this is something that not a lot of people are capable of.
