He's lovely, genuinely funny and warm-hearting. He's an Italian Catholic, I can only guess how important and big an honour it is for him that the Pope wanted to talk to him; to invite him to watch his film must have been absolutely mind-blowing. Hence his excitement here. Southern Europeans, we are a lot more expressive of their feelings. That's the norm in our cultures. Which is the opposite of the British culture in that respect. His excitement is nothing to laugh at.

He steals my heart every time I watch him. He is a very lucky man to be so passionate about life itself. Life is Beautiful was the hardest movie I have ever watched, I want to cry every time I hear the music and see Roberto's face from the film. At some point, I think he wanted to become a priest. Apart from having accomplished the rare feat of remaining a child, I think Benigni is an excellent litmus test: If you find him annoying or over-the-top, you've probably been hanging around dead people for far too long.
